I am looking for a female maltese. Do any of you know of any responsible breeders in south Alabama? Perhaps even the Meridian, MS area or Florida panhandle near Pensacola?

There is a great breeder in Oklahoma......she has wonderful maltese and she is a shower/breeder of the highest quality. You will not be disappointed in her quality of maltese. I would classify her as a very "responsible" breeder and I have met her in person. She is great to deal with and very nice.

I am still casually looking. I can't necessarily fork out $1000 or more for one right now. If I did, that would cut into the money I have for any unforseen vet bills. It is very discouraging right now.

Well I know the Ta-jon maltese are very reasonable with retirees.......the pups are a lot more. Hope you hold out until you find "exactly" what you are looking for.........think with you head and not always with your heart! :)

That is EXACTLY what I am doing! I have Raley to love already. I am taking my time on the maltese. I know I'll find one.

*Watching for rocks being thrown at me now....* I honestly wouldn't mind becoming a small, small breeder. I live in a small town and people here have to travel a minimum of 2 hours to buy popular dogs. I don't want to be a big time breeder but have considered doing it on a VERY SMALL scale. I also would rather someone buy a healthy, affordable maltese from me than drive to the flea market to buy one. (I would also be able to see for myself if they were going to a good home. I would never just sell one to "anybody and everybody" that wants one.) Yes, the nearest flea market to us does sell maltese, yorkies, boxers, etc.....and I refuse to buy one. At least if they bought one from me they would have an experienced breeder. My husband and I have bred rat terriers in the past. We didn't do it for the money but for the people who love little rats!We only allowed our bitches to have 2 litters each and then they were retired. I realize that since I have now posted this that there is no telling what will be said to me but at least I'm honest.

Obviously you must know what you just typed isn't right, cause you are expecting a back lash. Well, I would not trash you, but I am kind of sick and tired of people thinking they could just bred on a small scale without knowing what they are doing. there is so much info and education on this topic, take some time to read it. I mean, flag up, the nearest flea market at least if they bought one from me they would have an experienced breeder  so you would sell to a flea market  Like I said stay and read and read and read.
Good Luck

I don't have issues with anyone becoming a small scale breeder as long as they are prepared for the long haul of doing testing for any genetic issues and as long as they start with "quality" stock. But to use just any bitch that is available (even if it meets all the standards) for breeding and not testing for genetics and basing the breeding on "looks" or "personality" . . . . . . well, then I have issues. I have had a great opportunity myself to breed as I have two gals that came to me that were not spayed. They have wonderful coats, minimal staining, nice structure, strut but I was not willing to risk breeding them and something go very wrong nor was I willing to invest in the expense of "testing." I just don't have the capital to invest ........ just ask Stacy the cost of breeding, she'll tell you it isn't cheap! Plus she shows!!!

I highlighted what you took issue with and she did not mean she would sell to a flea market......she meant that she "HOPED" that by breeding, she would make it possible for people to buy from "her" and not go to a flea market for their fluff. :)

Thank you. I knew someone would slam me because I have seen it happen to several other people on other boards. That is the reason I prefaced my post the way I did. People buy animals like crazy at the flea market. I would LOVE to see an END to that. Also, just because I am showing "interest" in breeding does not necessarily mean I am going to. I knew that if I even mentioned that I have thought about breeding that someone would jump down my throat. I came here to learn more but I can tell that I am not welcome here due to me possibly wanting to breed "in the future". I sure hope everyone else that thinks about breeding and comes to this board is not jumped on. For the love of the breed it should be a place to educate and mentor--not degrade.

Meg.......... I don't think anyone slammed you or jumped down your throat nor was anything implied that you were not welcome at Maltese Talk. Myself and Andrea, which have been the only posters, were merely expressing our opinions and knowledge of what breeding involves and as I said, I have no problem with breeding by anyone as long as they educate themselves on the breed they plan on breeding, know the investment it takes with purchasing good stock and testing for genetic issues "BEFORE" they undetake breeding.

I think Andrea misunderstood your comment about the flea market but other than that, she made some good points about "educating" yourself before you go into breeding. I hope you stick around and appreciate that this is a great forum and slamming or jumping down someone's throat is not permitted. BUT, expressing one's knowledge and opinion is encouraged. Nor do I feel there were any comments that indicated you were not welcome on MT. :)

I don't see it as you being slammed, so I'm sorry you feel that way!!! I definitely see why you want to, but the problem is that people will still buy from flea markets regardless of what you do. And that is not your fault, that is their fault for not doing their homework.

I do see a few problems with just wanting to 'breed a little.' The first and biggest problem is - where are you going to get your breeding stock? The reality is - it is very hard for backyard breeders to find nice quality breeding dogs. So usually, you are starting with not the best representations of the breed to begin with. Most reputable show breeders won't share their studs with breeders who have no interest in showing their dogs, so again, that limits things.

Are you interested in showing? If so, that opens a whole new world to you. If you want to breed, that is the best way to go about it, in my opinion. Soo many doors will open up. if you want more info on that, just let me know!

Ladies, THANK YOU! I have had a hysterectomy and at times my mood is not where it should be. :( I would love to show one day if I get a maltese. I am not set on breeding but it is something I have thought about. :(As for showing, the problem is that I live in the middle of "nowhere" and would have to travel great distances to even be mentored. That is definitely something I will have to consider. Education? I would definitely do my homework. I am not one to do something without research first....perhaps I learned that in graduate school. I do want to get to know everyone here so that I can learn more about the maltese. I don't plan on becoming a back yard breeder. If I ever decide to do something I do it right if at all possible. Thank you for your support. I got Raley a new tie dye t-shirt today and when I put it on him I couldn't help but think how much I could do with a female!! She would be a diva for sure!

Just pop in here to wish you luck if you do decide. Just by reading what it takes to be a breeder I know it's a big commitment. If your serious I'm sure there will be a reputable breeder who is more than willing to show you the ropes.
I remember I wanted to breed my girl and this community was wonderful in explaining so much stuff that even if it's obvious I was senseless. Shees I didn't even know that at five yrs they shouldn't be bred (now my kids even know).
All breeders start somewhere and I'm glad your doing your homework before taking big steps.

Great and very true point!! Good breeding stock (from a reputable breeder) is extremely expensive- much more than $1,000...probably many times that.

Also from what little I know, if you're truly breeding to better the breed (and going to and participating in shows) this really has to be something you have to be passionate about because it's going to eat a hole in your wallet.

(I'm not slamming you at all- just expressing my humble opinion.)

Thank you. You're right; It does take alot of money. I am only in the "thinking about it" stage! Regardless of whether I decide to breed or not I am still passionate about having a little female. My little boy is spoiled rotten! I think he would enjoy having a companion. If I could ever duplicate his personality and disposition I would--but I know thats not going to happen.

Thanks again, ladies!
