View Full Version : 1st day in training
mia's mom

Well Mia had her 1st day with her trainer yesterday. I'm on the fence about this. He corrected her a few times with the leash about staying put when the front door was opened. After the 3rd time I asked if we could put a harness on her instead. He said it wouldn't have the same effect. I explained about her small and vunerable trachea (ok maybe it bothered me more than her). She wasn't use to his big manly NO either. She listened to him though (as I gave him the evil eye). She did tremble when she was next to him even though he moved on to my other dog (the big beastly Bull Terrier) Which by the way did wonderfully with the correction & the manly NO! Is it me or is this how it's done? She is my little Princess but I also don't want her to run out to the street. By the way my big manly husband said he loves her just the way she is even if she is a licker and play biter. Any feed back?

I don't want anybody to train my babies to be nonlickers!!!! I love that soft tongue gliding across my face and so does hubby!! And the play biting will stop in time with patience and correction. I believe the collar does work better in training but also think it can be dangerous due to the delicate trachea problems smaller dogs have. Obedience coming from love rather and fear is always a better way to go!! BUT keep in mind this is JMO!!!!
Did he just use the collar and leash or did he use a "choker" on her???? The choker is desided to tighten but then release quickly. I do wear collars on mine but they are older and have already gone throught the training process. Halters don't work on my babies because of the VERY LONG HAIR they have and it will mat!

I have no advice.:D I have heard though that the training lasts a little while then somehow seems to fade ..I wonder if thats true!

Yeah if he used a choker on her he would have been out the door faster than he knew what hit him. I do love her kisses it's my hubby that says she is always licking. She is the baby in the house so maybe I'm a wee bit over protective.:p

This same company trained my Rottie a few years back and when I gave him a command he was a soldier. I'm just a little nervous it will break her spirit...she is so playful & loveable.:)

AWW I dont think it will break her, I guess if you keep up with it she will follow through. For Nemo he just grew out of the puppy biting and ankle biting, with age I think they get smarter. I always said NO loudly and it took time but now at a year and almost 8 months none of those habits have resurfaced!
Good Luck to you and Mia~~:D

I think once they learn, it is there for good unless you let years go by.......but just like the sit command. Once they get it........it's there!!!! They are so smart and can learn so much with time, patience and effort. I had a poodle that went through two classes for obedience....she never forgot her commands or directions! And the maltese and yorkie breeds are so eager to learn!!! I look at it as fun when teaching them something new.
It's like the "old" saying: If you don't use it, you'll lose it! Same with the training of dogs.............they will forget if you teach them and then never use it with them.
