View Full Version : Does Your Malt Bark At Everything?

I just went to take Macy & Jazzy outside to potty and my husband was sitting in the middle of the floor on the sun porch putting a new garage door opener together. They went nuts barking it was crazy they do this at anything that is new, different or out of place. Like a new car sitting in the driveway. Does anyone else's malts do this? And, is there any hope to stop it?

My Yorkie barks at everything new! And both bark every time the door bell rings............but we have got that under control now! I simply told them, "aaaaaah, no barking" and went through the exercise several times until they complied. Each time they complied they were lavished with praise and physical touching........then we proceeded into another area and given a treat! Sometimes just saying "it's alright" and reassuring them may help. Just a few suggestions you might try. If you can go to the new object and sit and call them with reassuring words and then let them sniff to see that it is okay, it may help!!! If they see you are okay with the new object, it may be easier for them to accept! JMO:)

Every dog is different. Our first maltese would bark at every little thing, it would just drive us crazy. He was a great watch dog though. No one could ever break into our house with him around (he also had help from our cockatiel).
Jack on the other hand only barks when he is in his psycho mode (which is at least once a day). He just won't shut up until he's ready to stop. He doesn't bark at all to go outside, he rings a bell to let us know, and when someone comes into the house he sits and justs waits for them to pet him. He will never make a great watch dog!!!

 Oh Lord!! If I don't have the same routine Nemo goes nutzo:confused: If I even put the laundry basket on the floor he will bark till I pick it up:confused: and when Nick leaves for work he goes crazy he offers Nick his ducky (TOY), I think it's a gesture to please stay:p I love him he's such a good boy!!!

Chipper barks at everything. I have tried the method I saw on the Dog Whisperer. It's similar to Carol's--I just say Shhh-no barking and then if he doesn't stop- Touch him with your finger and say Shhh again. It helps some but not a whole lot. Doesn't help that I live in front of a little league baseball field either.

Emma barks at every little noise. The other day, I walked into the bedroom with a laundry basket and she was sleeping on our bed. She went crazy, barking. Phew! We're working on that :) Completely the opposite of Miko, my yorkie...He never barks, but he does make noises when he wants to play or wants attention.

all my babies do...for every little noise and scent...it drives me crazy...

Babe has his moments. In an effort not to annoy the neighbors, after bark # 2 I would come to see what the problem was...usually nothing.

When I groom him and he can see out the window he sometimes will bark at people walking by or sounds--airplanes; cars; etc.

When he does bark I sit behind him and stroke his neck from behind and whisper in his ears "it's okay", and tell him it's a car; etc. He sometimes will try to bark but I'm stroking his neck...he changes from barking to just making low sounds--then stopping.

Then I give him a Nylabone, and get him to focus again.

It has worked so far.

I am still do the shh-no barking with Chipper and it is really helping. He will go to a whine or a soft growl instead of barking. I guess it just takes time with any method. I really didn't think it was helping but he is doing much better now.

How cute!! Chipper and my daughter's Yorkie Marty barked at the TV one time because animal planet was on and there were dogs on it.

Kira and LB feed off of each other! When one barks the other does! I tell them to stop, but wouldn't you know, LB has to have the last yip. LB barks at her reflection on our sliding door in the evening. In the mirror in the room, it catches her off guard sometimes and she barks out of suprise.

Well, I am happy to know it is not just Macy & Jazzy. Like everyone else they bark at anything different. I had piled up some tree limbs and chunks of wood they fell into the yard after a storm and when Macy & Jazzy saw the pile of tree limbs they went crazy.

Abbey and Tinker are my watchguard dogs "on duty" at all times.:tongue11:
When they get going (mostly at the cat) I can't even get their attention, much less just say "shhhh"

My Archie is the best dog in the world - he doesn't bark at much! :heart6: I just love that guy!

Mia is barking at something outside that you can not see or hear.

I have a question/suggestion: Is Mia drinking distilled water? And is she eating out of stainless steel bowls?

I've found w/ Babe that giving him only distilled water and using only stainless steel bowls for food and water he has no (or very little) tear stains or stains around his mouth.
In fact the tearing stopped. He's still cutting in his permanent teeth. He lost all baby teeth.

She's so cute. I know I have not posted Babe's pics yet--I've been busy w/ him--no time for me. But Mia and Babe look like brother and sister. Her hair will get thick and lush soon so keep up the grooming.

Babe's hair is just over 5 inches and very thick.

You've done a great job w/ her. You should be proud.:)

Thanks for the info. about the barker breaker. I haven't gotten yet. I'm still trying to work w/ him a little more to stop or limit the barking. He's getting better--he has his moments. I've found if he hasn't had his naps during the day he barks more. Naps--no barking.

Thanks

Linda

Krystal, I personally don't believe that crapola about distilled water just my opinion:p I give spring water and Nemo has never had a staining problem. What I believe is if the parents stained alot then it's in the genes and thats it there is nothing you can do! Stainless steel bowls are a myth in my opinion:p I use them , only because they help keep germs at a distance thats all. MIA is gorgeous she is teething, dont worry about it, it will pass with time..

KMitchell:

I Found Nemo may be right about the parents/genes w/ re: to staining. I just know that when I changed Babe's water from tap water run thru a Britta purifier (that I feel does zero) his tearing quickly stopped. And he is teething still; primary teeth are there but in final stages.

I won't give my opinion on her staining...she is young; and has issues to go thru before she is an adult. I think Babe is 4 or 5 mos. older then she is.

But she is so cute and funny (funny in a good way). She was hearing something that you couldn't hear. Or maybe chasing a moth that was coming near the window. It was a relief to see how similar Babe is to her, and what I go thru each day.

Don't worry about the stains...I Found Nemo (Andrea) is probably right. I know very little; I'm new like you.

***If you have any tips for me I would be interested in hearing because you have researched more then I have had time for.

Your're being a good Mother to her...she's happy; and looks well trained; and well cared for.

One ?: Can you tell me how to post pics...I never have posted pics on my computer (computer dummy); so if you could tell me because you are so great at it I would appreciate it. I want to take pics today because Babe was just bathed; and I want you all to see the little rascal.

Enjoy little Mia.

Thanks

Linda

Thanks!

All you have to do is connect the USB cord to your camera and to your computer, then turn the camera on and the computer will detect a new device and will ask you what you want to do. I cant wait to see pictures of Babe!!!

Thanks for the post. I don't have a digital camera so I was going to have negatives put on a CD?

This is where I draw the blank from this point...how to get pics from A. to B. I'm not that computer literate. I just know basics.

Any advice is appreciated.

How is Mia doing? Is her coat getting full? I'm curious--do you put Mia to bed at a certain time? Promptly at 8:00 p.m. Babe knows it's his bedtime and goes to bed, and sleeps the night w/o awakening. He's easier to manage in the evening after his dinner. He's biting my Mom in the a.m. for unknown reasons, but at night is very docile:confused: I'm trying to work w/ him to stop this. Does Mia ever not share her toys w/ you? Babe refuses to return his tennis balls for fetch...he just wants to guard them. It's puzzling.

Was I right that Mia was hearing something outside far away that you could not hear. Your video of her was adorable. I hope she is bringing you lots of enjoyment each day.

Thanks-

Linda

I have never had pictures put on a CD from the store but I have put pictures on a CD so I imagine it would be the same thing....Just put the CD in your computer and it will prompt you on what you want to open them with...then you can save them and upload them on the site!

Mia is doing great! She is ball of energy!!! I dont know what you mean by having a "full coat" but her coat has lots of hair!!! LOL, it is thick, but not super thick. It is like it was when she was a puppy. I dont put Mia to bed at a certain time, but she puts herself to bed around 9:00-10:00pm. She falls asleep on the couch around that time while I am watching TV. Mia shares her toys fine. Sometimes she will play fetch with me, but other times she has her own agenda and watches me throw the ball and get it myself or she will run after it and run back to me...without the ball!

Actually, Mia was just barking at herself in the window! You couldnt really see it, but she could see herself and was playing with herself. If I dont close the blinds at night she will sit there and bark! Its annoying sometimes but I am getting better about remembering to close the blinds!!

LOL...mine does the same thing. At first I thought she saw the other dog outside but then she started growling and barking non-stop.....It was so funny. When she see's me in the reflection she looks at me then the reflection then at me again. Mine gets tired about 10 pm then she will sleep anywhere she's at.:)

Hi Krystal:

Full Coat: Babe's coat is so full I must section off his hair to groom him to search for possible mats. I would say the density of his coat on his back/chest/rump is about 3-4 inches. His rump is getting dense mats despite daily grooming. And working them out is time consuming--I don't cut mats.

The length of his hair is about 5 1/2 inches. In his 3 mos. here his coat has filled in probably 60 %. Maybe a female's coat becomes denser later?

Don't worry about her coat. You're doing terrific w/ her.

Thanks for info. on how to post pics. I need to work out a few mats on his rump to fluff is hair before taking the pics. And I must leave town soon for one day, and I'm behind w/ the pics and everything else in my life. If I can squeeze pics in over the weekend I'll try. If not after the 25th of the mo.

Thanks--

Hi Lilybellesmom:

I'm behind w/ pic taking and everything else. So hang in there. I'm preparing myself to leave town for one day (and of course preparing Babe).

I'm having second thoughts about even going right now because I'm working w/ Babe intensely and can't take him w/ me.

So be patient. You all have heard my excuses before about not taking pics.
All I can say is definite pics after the 25th.

Thanks--

Thanks for info. on how Mia plays ball w/ you, and toy sharing. I'm trying to get Babe to get his ball and bring it to me for throwing. He's excited w/ his tennis balls now. He gets the ball but goes to the opposite end of the room w/ it--he usually bounces it himself and plays like he's playing soccer. So I was curious about Mia.

I placed all his toys in a basket on the floor so he can select toys; he also has issue w/ guarding his toys. And I'm trying to break him of this.

Finally yesterday I accomplished two things w/ him: I got him to come to me by motioning to him w/ my hand; and I trimmed his nails--Hooray!

You started training w/ a young puppy, and I'm dealing w/ an older puppy that had no prior training; so it's hard to turn back time, but I'm trying everyday.

Does Mia like tags on towels and wash cloths? Babe is fascinated w/ them. He prefers a towel or wash cloth w/ a tag vs. a toy to chew on. Get Mia Nylabones if she is still teething. Babe recently lost his last baby tooth; but his still dealing w/ is upper back teeth coming in completely. The Nylabone Dental Chew is a great bone.

Again, thanks for info. I appreciate it.

Do you use a detangler on Babe's mats? I don't cut mats either.

Hi:

Yes I use a detangler on Babe's hair. I have no clue what he does at night, but lately I'm finding cottony mats on his rump. Since I started using the Olive Oil mixed in his food, his hair has become very lush and thick quickly. He's more cooperative on his grooming table--but of course does not want me to untangle mats however. Untangling the dense mats I must wait until
he's alseep--not fair to him, but it gets the job done.

Thanks
