I was told before we moved and by our new vet here that I need to get Mitzy in for her dental. I've been dreading this as anesthesia is always scary, but I made the first move today. I made an appt. for Thursday for her teeth to be looked at and possibly have bloodwork done.

Is it ok to have the bloodwork done Thursday or should I wait and have them do it the day of the surgery?? The woman I talked to said it would be fine to have it done Thursday but for her spay I had the bloodwork done the same day so I'm not sure.

What are the questions I should be asking?? This is Mitzy's first time, and mine  So I'm not exactly sure what I need to be asking in this case. One vet I had called (not the vet I finally made the appt. with) had mentioned about x-raying the teeth (Radiograph), is that really necessary??

Anything else I need to be asking??

Don't have a clue but JiJi needs a dental too. Her teeth are already starting to stain :(

Can't wait for response.

With my dog Jack they did not do x-rays at all. I would think that you would only need them done if you had a reason. When I first got my poor Mindy she had terrible teeth and when she had her dental they didn't do any x-rays for her either. Apparently dogs cannot get cavities so I don't see the point of the x-rays. I would just do the cleaning and that is it. I know how worried you must feel as I was in the same boat as you are last week. Every time they are put under it is scary. Good luck and I'll be thinking about the two of you on Thursday.

As long as the blood work is done close to the day of the anesthesia it is ok. I think they say no more than a month between the two.

Yes, that is what my vet recommends too. Dogs can get cavities although it is unusual. They more often have gum disease and plaque (hence the recommendation to give them treats they can chew on).

Tink will be having her dental checkup and cleaning this year too. It's always a little unnerving to have them sedated. I used to get worried every time my poodle had a cleaning. He only had to have X-rays when they were going to remove teeth so I have no other experience with that - sorry - no help. :(

OMG Mitzy's visit to the vet today was HORRIBLE!!

She had a basic exam done, turns out she will need an tooth extraction on one her front canines because its grown in wrong and is beggining to affect other teeth. No problem. Well, the vet finished the exam and offered to clip Mitzy's nails :D I said great!! Well she comes back and has expressed her glands (I never do that on Mitzy because she's never had an issue expressing them herself) and plucked her ears AND drawn blood (for pre-op) assuming I wanted that all done  I was so pissed. I didn't even listen to the quote they gave me for the dental  I just told them, don't contact me, erase Mitzy's records we won't be coming back

So the hunt for a vet to do her dental continues..

I've been calling around and it ranges anywhere from $200-$800  $800!! I don't think so

I think I found one place, who is a holistic vet as well, which gave me a decent price so I'll go check them out ALONE. Lol I would hate to put Mitzy through another visit like that before I feel comfortable

So sorry that you had a horrible experience today!! I know how hard it is to find someone good to take care of our fluffs needs. I'm going through the same thing. I feel terrible that a lot of us are going through similar problems with people trying to take us because they know we will spend the money on our dogs if we have to. It's like they don't really care about our fluffs only lining their pockets!!

I'm sure your mad that they didn't ask you first but why did they even take Mitzy out of your sight

The only time I let my furkids go with them is when there being prep before surgery.

It's good your looking for another vet. Mention that you want to know every detail before it's done even if it's minimal. Good luck Jess.

They asked if I wanted her nails clipped and I said sure.. then the tech took her to what I assumed was to clip her nails.. THAT will never happen again

Jess, you are so right to be upset with that vet. To take it upon themselves to do all of that stuff without your consent is incredible.
I have a fantastic vet, but I really had to search for them. I hope you find one half as good as mine!
Good luck!

We always use the vet on the military bases and have never had any issues but they normally don't do surgeries or dentals so I have to find a vet for a dental :( it sucks because I won't have any rappor built with this vet or know anything about them. I feel I'm throwing all this money away just checking vets out

Wow Jess, what a nightmare!!!!! The tech was way out of line with doing anything to Mitzy that "YOU" didn't okay first!!!! I know she was trying to be helpful but still, it should have been run by you before she did it.

As far as blood work before the dental, my vet always does it the day of the cleaning but I don't believe he has ever taken x-rays of any of my fluffs before the dental. But he does a great job and is very careful with the trachea and using the right size especially with Brandy! :) :) :)

That is strange that they took her out of the room...Gracie had her annual vet checkup last week and I asked them to trim her dew claws (apparently the groomer did not realize she even had dew claws...they were grown to an almost closed circle!). The vet tech did the trimming right there. The only time they have taken her into another room is when they were going to do the actual dental. And they always ask me if I want this or that - never just do it without my permission. Sounds like an upselling tactic to me...:( I hope you find a great vet.

I need to bring Nemo also for a dental. In New York a dental is 450 bucks! I think that is outrageous :(

I totally agree with you! That "IS" outrageous!!! Maybe you could check around and see if there are any nearby vets like in New Jersey or PA that could do the dental cheaper. I have four to do dentals on but thankfully, it is not that expensive here. They always do blood work the day of the dental. I have never had any issues with any of the fluffs after they had their dentals......thank goodness. If you recall, when I got Buffy, her teeth were sooooo bad that the infection from the gums had started to spread to her body through the blood and she most certainly would have died if she had not received treatment. Kallie has had three dentals and seems to be my "problem" child when it comes to plaque and tarter. Brandy has pretty good teeth and has only had one cleaning and they are very careful with her because of her collapsed trachea. Toby has "NEVER" had a dental and his teeth are perfect, white and plaque/tarter free!!! Go figure! :)
