I just want to post to everyone, please don't feed your little ones raw meat. With all this dog food scare I know many are thinking of feeding raw foods.
My story is a sad one and the ending result was death for my little malt :( from raw meat medialions (from a very expensive up scale pet store.)
While fighting this the nuerologist I took her to said he would NEVER feed his dogs raw meat of ANY type.

 It just confuses me why Raw would even be considered? I mean I know it's raw meat in the Animal Kingdom but not for dogs:confused: can someone explain why would that be fed.
Thanks,
Andrea

I started giving her raw when I read up on it on the internet (BARF). The store owner I buy it from swears by it his 4 dogs eat it. He's smallest dog is a pug. I ask my vet and he says all the ingredients are good. Yes, I was afraid feeding her raw organic chicken :( but she is doing just fine (blood test ok) and she likes it. I am very curious to find out what happened to Starry. Mia is a very finiky eater. The people that are pro raw say it helps with tear staining shiney coats and less allergies. I only give it to Mia once a week since I still have "raw chicken" lurking in my head.

I also bought that book Scared Poopless with that dog Chiclet in it (the video every one seems to like) and it covers raw food also and they are proponets to raw. So I'm still on the fence about this that's why I would like to know what happened to Starry. Any info?

Thank you all for your condolences. Sorry Im slow getting back..
I have told this story on another maltese site so sorry if you have to keep seeing it.:o
I purchased my $3000.00 little girl Sept 2005 from a person that I thought (probly a broker) was good bc she seemd to care and have alot of info on her website.
This was the 1st small dog I bought and thinking that I was spending alot of $ and could have AKC papers for an additional price fooled me into thinking I was on the right track.
She was suppose to be 4 lbs at adult.
When I got her she was 81/2 wks old, I didn't know that was a nono.
She was very sweet AND smart!
The vet said she checked healthy except for her fontal would prob not close all the way.:( (1st bad sign of a bad breeder)
I was trying to make sure I gave her the best foods and went to an upscale whole food type petstore that said the raw meat medialions in the freezer section were great, just thaw one out in frig and give next day. So I bought those around Dec? She ate one also my Lhasa. Star thru hers up immediatly but my Lhasa did not..(she's 16 lbs.)
Also I looked back on my records and the vet gave her a rabis and booster around 12 weeks together. (she was only about 3lbs then!)
I noticed a in few months she seemed to run in a door or wall on her right side, my hub thought I was overprotective and not true.
In May I noticed she was swaying in her back end a little and not strong, the vet thoght maybe LP (no), then maybe spinal injury from playing too hard.
We gave her some steriods and watched her but afew weeks later she was getting worse and could not run well.
The vets here could not figure it out and suggested I go to A&M but went to Gulf Coast vets in Houston where they refered me to a nuerologist there.
We did many test(poor thing), MRI,Spinal, and lab.
He tested and saw her optic nerve or something in her right eye was bad and she had little vision there if any.:(
The Lab results came back... toxoplasmosis which he said can only be from eatting cat poo or raw meat.
(Also now her other eye was going bad.)
I or my family have no cats, I never let her out of my sight outside.
Also he said it could be GME which is a brain degenerating disease and only confirmed by autopsy.
The ending diagnosis was toxoplasmosis with GME.
When I asked if the meat medalions were a bad idea to feed her he said he would never feed his dogs raw meat. They have evolved and are not wolves.
All summer I was a basket case and held her end up over her pee pads as she was so good and tried to crawl to them when she needed to pee or poo.
In Aug I noticed she started to have little tremors and by then she could only crawl. I knew the look in her eyes she was sick and my decision to hold her in my arms as she was euthenized was VERY hard but the right one.
I feel I was the cause of her death and it was a horrible lesson. I want others to know maybe their dog can handle it but I will not take the chance again.
My Lhasa being bigger prob was able to ward off the parasites.
The pet store said the level of freezing kills any bacteria but I don't believe it now.
I feed my new malt people food that is cooked and kibble. Also she is bigger.
Star was a week away from her 1st b.day.:(
Thank you all for asking about her, she will always be in my heart. Even tho she was with me for such a short time I cannot believe the impact she has left on me.
I have her beautiful wooden box of ashes next to my bed and her favorite toy.
She is in my avatar in a milano cookie box on another maltese site. I don't know how to do the pic thing here and need to post my other dogs at some point.
If that did not happen I would have not found all this support and maybe in some way save another from such a sad end.
Thank you all for wanting to know about her, she was a true "Star".
p.s. I got an enormous amount of info about many diseases from the
"Merck Vet manual."............. Lisa

You all are so nice.
I am glad you wanted to know about Star. I still have moments but
Honestly, it's ok that Iam asked to tell it, thinking it may help and inform others makes it not as hard.
Ladyjazz I am glad you and others are reconsidering the raw food, I think meat is the only raw food I would be worried about. What do you think?
I know others have suffered the loss of their precious ones and this darn food scare is confusing everyone.
Andrea, I know you have seen my story on the other forum, you've been there for me before. thank you.
Iam sure others here also maybe active on other sites so hello and thanks for reading my posts again.
It's so great to have such wonderful friends here that understand our crazy doggy ways.:o
A :) Big thank you's to all for being such great support..
Now what is with the new recalls!!!! dingo chicken jerky? oh no.

You know it never even crossed my mind to give them raw foods but I knew a few people did that I just didn't. You are right I would think that the highest risk would be with meats. My boys are not getting any raw meats. In terms of the dingo chicken jerky whats the story on that? I have never heard of it but I would like to know why its being recalled.

LadyJ,
I heard today on CNN or FOX:confused: that the Dingo brand of chicken jerky strips was being taken off the shelf bc of samonella.
I give my Lhasa a chiken jerky strip (not Dingo brand thank goodness) as a reward for letting me put her eye drops in, Holly gets one too, she learned that rope really fast.
Also I read the Iams dental chews I bought had wheat gluten as the first ingredient!!! Then I read the ziggys I have a box full of have that WG in it too!
I sure threw alot of money in the trash today.
I used up the last of the Royal C. kibble, Dayzie's favorite. Now am using the blue solid gold I have. She's not crazy about it at all. She'd rather eat plain pasta than that I noticed. I had a hard enough time figuring the kibble out, mybe now w/ not as many choices it will be easier???

Hmmm I definitely need to start watching CNN more. I mainly watch the local news in the morning before work and sometimes in the evenings but I need to watch CNN to be filled in. Thanks for the info and heads up Lisa. We all really appreciate it. :)
