View Full Version : Rylie is Getting Spayed

My little Rylie goes in for her spay on Friday. Can I tell you I'm already getting nervous?

She has her pre-op exam and blood work on Thursday. They offered to keep her Thursday afternoon and overnight for her surgery because some people don't like being inconvenienced by making the drive twice. I politely said no thank you, I don't mind bringing her in again.

Really? You expect me to choose to leave my baby all alone the night before she goes under for surgery??? I can't believe people actually elect not to keep their love bugs with them the night before.

I love my vet. He's very good, so I shouldn't be worried... but I am. I wanted to get her in for her spay before I have to go back to school. This way I can be with her every second while she's recovering and spoil her to death. <3

I asked if they would be checking for dental needs (like retained puppy teeth) while she was already out and they assured me they would and that it is routine for them. She will also be getting micro-chipped.

I printed out the anesthesia protocol thread on YT to take with me to her pre-op appointment. I tried to ask the receptionist some of the stuff, but she didn't know as it is a case by case basis thing. I opted in to all the optional "fees," such as the IV and pain meds (why you wouldn't I have NO idea). I also already bought a onesie for her to protect her stitches.

Is there anything else I should ask about/check in to/have done/prepare for? I want to make this as smooth as possible for my baby. Thanks!

I know what you mean about being nervous. I have one that's not spayed yet and I know I should ASAP (She's just so skinny). My only advise is to keep a good eye on her. I will send her lot's of positive energy.

I was so nervous too. You're right...It's good that she's getting it done while you can be with her during recovery. I had my two done at the same time. I also had to hand feed my two chicken and drinks from a syringe. I spoiled them too.
I also had it done on a friday so I could sit with them all weekend and watch movies so they stayed still.
I think I would ask if your vet would do blood work before hand. I think it has to do with any problems that could arise. The IV fluids are great to do. Muffin had them. Boomer weighed enough so the vet said it wasn't necessary.
You'll be...I mean she'll be fine. Just get the chicken and the movies ready ;)

Thanks for the support guys!

I really appreciate it and so does Rylie! She's having her pre-op blood work Thursday. Hopefully, everything will check out fine.

It is just scary to put them under... they are just so tiny!

It's perfectly normal to be nervous! I was so worried when Emma was spayed (she just seemed so TINY! She was about 5.5 months old and around 3 pounds). Everything turned out fine though. I had it done on a Friday so that I could be home with her all weekend. Her incision was glued so I didn't have to watch out for stitches, but she didn't really pay much attention to it anyway. She mostly just wanted to sleep in her bed. By Monday she was acting a little better but it just took a few days before she was back to "normal". She had 3 baby teeth pulled at the same time. I gave her pain meds the first day and that was all. Her vet told me that I could give them to her if I thought that she seemed to need them but that it wouldn't be bad for her to feel a little pain as it would keep her still so she could have time to heal. If she felt too much better, she'd want to be more active too soon! Made sense to me so that's what I did... Anyway, at least it's something that you only have to go through ONCE! Good luck!

That makes a lot of sense. I'll see how she does and of course manage her pain, but since she's a little jumper normally I don't think a little pain would be a bad idea to keep her resting.

Good point. Thank GOD we only have to go through it once!

I get the nervous thing. Each fluff is different. Zoe came through this with flying colours (I also had some baby teeth removed and her microchipped) BUT Abbie...poor kid had to go on antiobiotics before and she had a rough recovery (which included pain pills).

I agree with you about the taking them there overnight. I couldn't get to the vet fast enough yesterday when they said Abs could go home. They said most people would just leave them there the rest of the day...I wanted her home with me so I could watch her and know she was OK.

See that is what just shocks me! I can't imagine just leaving your baby there unless you absolutely had to (like you were at work or something).

I think I would probably leave my girl there for atleast a couple of hours. Complications may occur and if they do it's better if a professional is there to know any warning signs and have a quicker chance in solving the problem. Your babies are really drugged so there out for the most part. If it's a vet you truly trust I don't think it's an issue.

Oh my vet force keeps her for an observation period after the fact. I mean leaving them their overnight (prior to surgery) or leaving them there well after they call you to come pick them up. Like I said, work or other circumstances where you HAVE to is understandable, but just leaving them there? I don't get.

I know what you mean! I was at work when Emma was spayed. I made arrangements to have my mom, who lives nearby, pick her up for me so she wouldn't have to stay any longer than necessary! So, by the time I got to my parents' house that evening after work, Em had already been spoiled by her nana for 2 or 3 hours... :)

You're so right about that, what better place than home.

Sounds like you are a good mom to your pup. She'll be ok and hopefully back up and wanting hugs/kisses. Just make sure she does not do any jumping for a few days. Zoey was different. Groggy the rest of the first day back and not her usual self the second day. The third day the little hussy was pestering Zeke again. Poor guy only had a couple of days break:D

I'm just nervous because you never know. My doc said that she's a-okay from the exam (they get the blood work results tomorrow and will let me know if there is anything wrong), but she did make sure to mention that even though Rylie is super healthy there is still a chance... :( It make me worry!

Yeah no jumping. That'll be hard for her. I call her "Rylie Roo" (short for Rose her middle name and kangaroo) because she loves to jump.

Poor Zeke... I'm sure he secretly loves it!

Rylie is doing okay and is home now. Poor thing is so out of it! I feel so bad for her. She's not eating/drinking, but the vet said that might happen. I gave her some Nutrical because she hasn't eaten since 9pm yesterday. My poor baby! I cuddled her all up on my bed...

I'm just glad she made it through the surgery without any complications. I was a worry wart all morning.

Here are some before pics from this morning and after surgery pics... poor thing looks so sad!!!

Aww Cozette is a really cute name!

I know just how you feel! She'll be okay. Just be sure to opt in for all the "optional" stuff, especially the pre-op blood work!

Yes they look sad after surgery, but she will bounce back in no time. It is better if they don't eat after surgery. They should not even drink a big amount of water the first time. It could make them nauseated and vomit.

I don't have a choice, the vet requires all the extras lol. I'm also getting her microchipped, which makes me feel tons better.

Cute pup. Rylie will be herself in a couple of days with lots of TLC. The microchip is a good idea. Best to have the bloodwork done for baseline values.

Rylie was microchipped as well. I'm happy she didn't have to have any dental work done. No retained puppy teeth to pull and her teeth are super clean (yay brushing everyday!). :D

She's doing much better today, but I'm still watching her like a hawk.

She looks like all she needs is some loving from her momma. The one I had trouble with not wanting to eat the day after is Lil' Man so I scramble some eggs and that got him wire up :D I didn't use butter or any type of oil so it wouldn't give him the runs.

She got plenty of loving last night. She wasn't comfy in her crate, so she slept in my arms. I, on the other hand, didn't get much sleep. She's continuing to get a lot of love today!

She was all over her kibble/water this morning. So that's good! She also had a piece of treat and some pineapple. She's doing really well. It is going to be about limiting her activity tomorrow I think. She isn't too active today.

MalteseJane

Yes you need to limit her activities for a week at least. When they are feeling well they have a tendency to over do it. Don't let her jump.

That's what I'm worried about. We relocated her to a room with no furniture she can jump on after lots of effort trying to figured out how to box her in. She's like a kangaroo most days. I don't call her Rylie "Roo" for nothing! She didn't try to jump today, but I fully expect her to be a pain in the you know what tomorrow. :D

That's good that you are getting her microchipped!! My vet did the same with Lucas!! He got neuter, pull out some baby teeth and microchipped!

How is Rylie today? BTW- You do they that they can play us like a violin, right? When my girls see I am all "are you OK baby?", they milk it for all it is worth. Just like with my Sophie..she used to reverse sneeze alot and my vet said not to make a big deal out of it or she would learn to do it just for attention.:wink5:

So glad Rylie made it through her surgery ok!! :) Spayed girls have more fun!! LOL!!

Just wanted to say LIMIT ACTIVITY!! You don't want to be rushing back to the vet when she has ripped open her stiches  Better to confine them for a few days with a nice, full Kong and let her heal up :D

Thanks she is cute... and a pain in the bum when she wants to be. :D She's definitely feeling better. She got out of where we have her enclosed in the kitchen today (had to wiggle between a barrier and the wall). She was jumping on the couch when I got home like a crazy person, which is why we limited her in the first place (nothing to jump on in the kitchen). I had to go to get my textbooks for semester starting up and dad was supposed to be watching her (we all know THAT won't be happening again... he did feel bad though so I didn't give him too much flack for it). Anyway, we have since found a new way to barricade her in and hopefully she won't figure out a way around THAT too quickly. They are just so darn smart!

Thanks so much for the compliments. I do think she is beyond cute, but I'm her mama so it's part of the job description! :D

Sorry I didn't make it back here till now. I've been busy with my little one. She slept on me practically all day yesterday and some today, but by afternoon she was being a stinker (see above). ROFL yeah they are that smart. Rylie is being like that with her pineapple pieces now... we were using them for training treats, but obviously she couldn't do tricks her first day back or her second... you see where I'm going here. She still had to get her pineapple though and I knew she'd eat it (which was important for the 1st day). Therefore, I just gave it to the poor baby in a dish. Well now that she's somewhat better I tried some tricks that aren't strenuous like "speak" and "sit." That little diva REFUSED. She eventually did "sit" and a few other tricks, but flat out refused to "speak" and ignored me  I can see it's going to be a fight when we go back to full on training. Oh well... I'm more stubborn than her. I'm just going easy on her because she's not feeling 100%.

So glad Rylie made it through her surgery ok!! :) Spayed girls have more fun!! LOL!!

Yeah I'm working REALLY hard on that. Had to crate her today while we figured out a new barricade (see agove). She's been really good so far, but I can see the fight increasing as the days go on.

Good to hear she is doing better!! We have a Weimaraner also so when Mitzy was spayed I set his crate up for her. She had everything in there and it was HUGE!! Lol She was only let out once an hour to go potty and to come to bed at night. After a few days I put her in the kitchen so she could walk around but nothing to jump on :wink5: We used those cheap baby gates you get at Wal Mart in the door ways to keep her in
