Started a new thread on this, hope that's what I'm suppose to do. I need some help with a question about my Sammy. He's 12 weeks and I was wondering at what age I should have him neutered? I know you are suppose to do it before they start lifting their leg, but how do you tell. I'm use to females and kind of in the dark with a male now. Sammy is really mellow and loves to cuddle, I'm hoping he will stay that way but I worry about Belle's influence on him. She is a stinker and can be pretty rowdy. She loves to do zoomies. Any other mommies with fluffs that do zoomies?:)

Hiii!!

I'm sooo happy you got a new brother for Belle!!!! Did you introduce him before? I don't remember! I'll like to see some pictures of him!! He sounds wonderful!!

I don't know at what exactly age you should neuter them! Lucas was neutered at 11 months!!... You should talk to your vet and see if he is ready! I don't know if the weight has something to do with the surgery!:):)

I'm sort of in the dark about neutering males too! I have Toby but he was already neutered when we adopted him at six months so I am assuming that somewhere between 5 and 6 months would be fine. But with that said, I think the vet would be the best person to ask or the ASPCA.......or maybe even your local pound and go from there. I know Maggie just had Bam neutered but I don't recall how old he is but pretty sure he is close to being six months.

They say 6 months or wait to see if there are also baby teeth needing to be taken out and you can combine the two. If you are concerned about leg lifting don't get your hopes up. Some will still lift their leg, neutered or not. And they will still hump. Mine was neutered at 6 months but if I ever would get a new MALE pup he would not be neutered before fully grown at about 1 year old. Forgot to add about marking. Early neutering will not avoid this. Even tho Alex was neutered at 6 months he will still mark. He marks every boulder in our yard and every spot going to the mail box where another dog peed on. He has never marked inside MY house, but he has marked at my daughter's house. She has a cat and a dog.

I would say at 5 to 6 months. 6 months and later they start lifting their leg:o
My two still had baby teeth, but I gave them bully sticke and that really helped them all come out on their own ;)

Well my male is a Weimaraner, not a maltese but we had him nuetered at 5 months. I would think 5-6 months would be fine as long as he meets weight requirements. We have NO issues at all with marking or leg lifting. He squats to pee.. so cute :D He does hump but its maybe every few months or so and we put a quick stop to it. So its not an issue for us.

Jess I understand it's not an issue for you. It's not an issue for me either. When Alex pees on his pee pads inside he squats. Outside he squats and lifts his leg. We stopped the humping by taking away what he loved to hump (big toys). One thing we cannot take away to hump is MYSELF. If I lay in bed he will come and try to hump my arm. We have tried and tried and tried. But besides moving myself from the bed or yelling at him or the penny can, he won't stop, he is a stubborn little guy. What I want to convey to the OP is that she should not expect some behavior to go away or start because of neutering. Neutering helps but it is no garanty.

Hi there, I have three boys currently. I have for most of my life always had at least one at all times I adore them. I first always speak to my vet and ask what they suggest as some have different reasoning on timing.

My vet whom we have been with since lord when I was a kid and Im closer to 50 then not lol anyways prefers it to be done at 6 month's. That went for all my little furkids and our larger ones also. I am aware some do it VERY young as puppies do to some adoption processes but I will keep my views on that out of it. I like the 6 months but him hiking that little leg since 5 was testing me.

Bamjamin just was done with a differant anstheic then normal, if you like can ask my vet what was used again as he is doing wonderful. We are on day 5 and he only had redness first 24 hour's if even, now his stitches are dry and he is 100 percent.

Jack was 6 months when he was neutered. He lifts his leg to pee and he had the crazy zoomies for the longest time when he was a puppy. He thought my house was the Indy 500 and he would take a flying leap onto the couch up onto the top of the couch, jump down and take off again.
He still gets the zoomies sometimes, but he has settled down.
He also marked, so we have belly bands for him. He has gotten better but when he goes by my son's house (2 dogs) he wears the band.

When he goes by my m-i-l's house the neighbor has a small dog. There is a chain linked fence between them. They met at the fence and then the macho-man doggie thing starts. The other dog pees on the chain fence, Jack goes over and pees over his. The other dog does it again, a little higher and Jack goes back over and goes higher than his. It keeps going on back and forth until they are shooting blanks but no one has the heart to stop them.
One time the other dog started to pee on Jack's spot and Jack ran over and started peeing on the poor dog as he was peeing!!!!! I was so embarrassed, but Jack was all smiles when he was done. He's such a bad boy:lol2:

Nemo was also 6 months. I will say he never marked until he was neutered  figure that one out! Neutering has nothing to do with marking at all.
Good Luck

Marking must really be a male thing...not sure what my dh is trying to mark in the bathroom but pretty sure it's not the toilet:mad:

Belle does this half squat thing on her pad but the other leg is lifted??? I think it's so she doesn't pee on that leg when it runs into a puddle.
When we had our male Lab, he taught my female Schnauzer to lift her leg outside on trees, how feminine;)

Nemo does not hump use to, but stopped, another figure that one out :D.
Humping is showing dominance it really has nothing to do with you know what  I definitely do think it is normal, some people stop it as soon as they see it. When you witness it just clap your hands and say NO.

Definatly normal!! We taught Jake from an early age it was NOT ok mark and definatly not acceptable to hump since it is a sign of dominance. He does try to hump his big stuffed animals every now and then but we don't allow it.

Jake will sometimes mark outside on top of Mitzy's pee or when we go to the dog park but if I see him doing it I try to discourage it.

Well Thank you ladies!! I was a little worry that could be something wrong!!:lol2::lol2: But I guess my boy is pretty normal:tongue::hearter:
