Need some help with ideas on getting Sammy to calm down when I give him a treat. He gets so excited he jumps all over and bites at the treat and my fingers then swallows everything whole. He did get treats at the breeders so it's not like he never had any. I give him treats for using the pee pad and for coming to me when I call him. I think maybe he's still too young to teach to much. Working on sit which he kind of gets but it the treat thing that is a problem. Any ideas?

I make my two sit and take the treat gently.

I will turn my hand away right beside their mouths if they are snapping it up.

I say "gently" with the treat right in front of them until they take it the way I want them to.
He's still a puppy...he'll learn.:hearter:

Omg Sammy is SOOO cute!!! You should take a video of him!!:hearter::hearter:

I think is sooo cute he gets so excited about his treat! Lucas still gets that excited LOL!

Is a good idea starting training him as you are doing it right now.. I think very soon he is going to get it! This little fluffs are SOOO smart and they'll learn!
And maybe you can cut on pieces his treat so he doesn't swallow so fast they whole piece until he learns to calm down and enjoy it!:D:tongue:

Sammy is such a puppy and the fact that he loves his treat will work in your favor in the long run. I think you are doing the right thing with rewarding him and my only suggestion is the delivery of the treat to him. I would definitely make him sit before you give him the treat if he will (remember he is a puppy with a puppy attitude, FOOD FOOD FOOD). I would try to hold the treat in my hand in a fist and let him smell it first and then as he calms down in attempt to smell it better or to get at it, slowly turn your fist over and open it up into an open palm and let him take it from your palm and not from your fingers. . . . . . . . it will save your fingers from being nipped!!!

His progress sounds like he is on the right tract and a smart little pup at that!!!

Just my two cents this is perfect time to teach "Watch me" "Focus" will be so much easier for him to train later in all things!

I like using a clicker

Teach him first by loading clicker (Trust me this is fast stuff they learn) I will break it in easy steps

Hold the treat at your eye level your hand turned so he see's treat give command "Sammy watch me" or "Sammy focus"

The second no matter how brief it is click and treat

Keep doing little sessions in the day no longer then 5 minutes for such a little guy

The GREAT thing about this way is I will lay money donw he will be adding a sit on his own in no time at all!

It's a great way to grab his attention for all things and gives you a great start to training :)

Maltese is a small cute breed of dogs.Generally it do not problem of behavior but some times it can be seen like the human babies do,due to strangeness. When they see a stranger than they do this problem. So its not a problem but some times its continuously appearing in your dog then must keep in your mind that there is any wound or allergic problem with your dog.
