At the beginning of the book Scared Poopless there is a quiz.
One of the questions is:
You want something for your dog to chew on. Your safest choice could be:
a) A raw chicken neck
b) The steak bone leftover from dinner
c) Dad's Gucci loafers
d) A rawhide chew
e) A large bovine leg bone

The answer is (a)...Fresh raw (not cooked!) chicken necks provide a healthy dog with calcium, meat and a good chewing experience. The other items may break teeth, cause intestinal blockage or contain harmful chemicals.

So, who does use this for chewing?

I think I did about the same as you. I was ashamed of myself after taking it. I did bring up about the rabies shot with my vet and he said we could do the 3 year thing. It is an excellent book.
So, your Mr. Wookie knows Chiclet? That is great.

I would like to try but I'm "scared poopless" to do it! I'm so afraid something will happen to my pups. They eat raw, but not bones like that. :(

Is the whole book about raw diets?

I only feed raw veggies and fruits but all meat is cooked. I know growing up that I was always told never to give raw chicken necks to dogs as they can "kill them." How times have changed. But what about the raw chicken salmonila on their fur??? Does it mean you would have to wash them every time you gave them raw chicken necks??? We are talking major wash with mine having long hair.:(

Teri, the book deals with many concerns.....
Rethinking vaccination
Food to Die For
Food to Live For
Stop Pest-ering Me
Death by Teeth
Why We Won't Have Sex
Preventing the Preventable
Combating Major Medical
Anesthesia Anxiety
Surgery is a Pain
Emergency Emergency
Home Alone
Disappearing Dogs
Car Trouble
The Not_So_Great Outdoors
Flying without Dying
Divorcing Your Dog
Looking for Love in All the Wrong Places
The Big Sleep: Yours and Ours
A Last Wag of the Tail

so, as you can see, the book tries to cover just about every concern.

Cooked chicken bones are the ones that are dangerous because they become brittle after cooking and can splinter and kill your dog.
Raw bones are not brittle, so they are supposed to be safe to chew on.
Miko, can't have any and it's not fair for him to have to sit and watch Emma either, so no they don't get raw bones or any bones for that matter. Well, they do get non-edible nylabones :)

Andrea, you NEVER post in the wrong thread. And I just want to add, this book should be a MUST read for everyone with a dog. It's great! Chiclet and Jan don't only talk about diets, they speak about so many other issues that dog lovers are confronted with.

I think I will get in touch with Jan and see about a "bulk" discount for all Maltese Talk members... anyone interested? It IS a great book and easy read.

enJOY!
