Does anyone know anything about this disease Legg-Perthes Disease? It is supposed to affect toy breeds. I have never heard of it and my Jazzy may have it. I am so worried about him.

Yes, I have heard of this disease...I hope that he doesn't have it! What makes you think your baby has it?

Jazzy has been favoring his left hind leg for about 2 weeks now and I took him to the vet last Tuesday but on exam the vet could not figure out why he was favoring that leg he suggested that Jazzy may have a sprain or something and to watch him close and I have but it only seems to be worse (he is still playing and running but he holds that leg up and sort of runs with a hop) anyway back to the vet today and they gave him a mild sedative and then took xrays he showed them to me and gave me a print out on this disease started Jazzy on an anti-inflamatory Metacam daily and return in 2 weeks or sooner. He said most of the time this requires a surgical procedure. Please keep my little Jazzy in your prayers he is just a little bitty guy 3 1/2 lbs and 10 months old.

Did he rule out luxating patella??
Here is a link to a website that has some great info on Legg-Perthes:
http://www.ahtluvr.com/ahtleggperthes.html
Treatment of Legg Perthes is surgery to remove the damaged femoral head and neck. After removal, the ligaments which criss cross the hip joint will strengthen and form a false joint. Smaller dogs seem to recover better from this surgery and may even regain almost normal use of the leg.

The above excerpt was taken from that website, so that's good news!

Jazzy will be in our prayers, and please keep us updated on his condition.

Yes, he first thought the problem was a luxating patella but it was not. Thanks for your prayers for Jazzy

Jazzy has been on Metacam for 4 days now and he is still favoring his left hind leg. It hasn't stopped him from running and playing as usual. We go back for a re-check and more xrays in 2 weeks. Thanks everyone for praying for Jazzy.

My Brea (a Yorkie) is having the same surgery on May 7th. It's on her hind left leg, too. She was taking the Metacam but it didn't help at all - she still is going around on three legs. She is almost 7 months old and weighs 3.6 lbs. You're right, it is scary but I have heard that the outcome is almost always good and the pups usually don't have any more problems unless a bit of bone decides to grow back in the spot of the surgery - that is rare, though.

Let us know how it went, ok??

I have to have Jazzy at the vet in the morning by 9am his surgery will have done about 11am the vet will call me as soon as it is over. Jazzy will spend Monday nite at the hospital and if all goes well I will pick him up on Tues afternoon. Everything I have read and heard about this procedure is that it is very successful especially on these little guys Jazzy weighs 3 1/2 lbs and is 10 months old so I am very positive that he will be fine.

Jazzy had his hip surgery this morning and everything went very well. It took about 2 hrs and the vet called me saying he was very pleased with the surgery and that the ball of the hip was much worse than what the xrays showed. They let me see him late today for about 45 minutes he stood up when he saw me and I scooped him up and held him close he has a very funny looking haircut now with his left hip, side & leg shaved but he was still beautiful to me. I will call in the morning for a report and they will let me know what time I can go get him. Man I am so happy that is over for him and me I have been a basket case all day. Thanks for all your prayers for Jazzy continue to pray for him that the recovery time goes well for him.

Jazzy had a good night and was ready to get up this morning to go outside to potty. We came back in and he ate his fresh cut up apple took his meds and ate a bit of kibble drank some water. Now he is laying in his soft bed in the living room. Macy just sits very close to him and watches him like she knows something is up they are so smart. I have noticed he is putting some weight on the affected leg. The vet wants him using it as soon as he will. Thanks guys.

Jazzy is doing good, he is getting pampered but I like doing that. I have been hand feeding him in his bed and taking his water bowl to him. He seems to be really sore today but I know that in humans that 3rd day is really the worst. He finally pooped last night so that is working fine. He runs so fast on 3 legs when he goes to the door to go outside it is funny to watch him. Thanks for thinking about Jazzy.

When Kallie hurt her back leg recently (just temp) I, too, was amazed at how fast she could get around with three legs. Furbutts adjust so well to whatever situation is thrown at them. So glad he is doing well!:) :)

I am sorry I missed this but I am relieved to have read it all the way thru and see that he is doing well.

My son had this disease. it is even less pleasant in humans. He spent 10 months on crutches. In humans it strikes only males around 10 yrs of age.

Sending healing hugs :big_hug: :big_hug:
