Kodie isn't feeling well. He woke up and threw up white foam twice which is probably due to an empty stomach. Then he refused his breakfast, which for him, isn't uncommon. However, he wouldn't even take a treat (that's how I know for sure if he is just turning his nose up at the food or if he is really not feeling himself). I tried every treat imaginable and he didn't want any parts of it. To top it off, his belly is making these gurgling sounds so I know he must have an upset stomach. Any suggestions on what I can give him? I always worry when he won't eat because he is so little and I worry about hypoglycemia. :( I hate when they are sick......:(:(

Lori, I'm sorry Kodie is not feeling well. You can try 1/4 of a 10mg tablet of Pepcid AC. I would not feed him tonight. His tummy needs to settle. How old is he and how much does he weigh?

Thanks for the suggestion. I have to check and see if I have the Pepto or the Pepcid. I am pretty sure I have one of them but if not, I will go get some. How much would you give of the Pepto?

I give Jake Pepto Bismol when he is sick, he has bad digestive issues :(

I know somewhere on MT we have a list of what amount to give, I'm going to hunt it down for you :wink5:

He can have water or a tiny bit of chicken broth but I don't think he will get hypoglycemia before tomorrow morning. In the morning, I would give about a tablespoon of something bland and see if he keeps it down(wait about 2 hours) then you can try another tablespoon. If he continues to throw up I would call the vet. Hope he feels better, soon.

In my opinion people worry too much about hypoglycemia. All his life my dog was and still is a small eater. His normal weight would be between 5.8 and 6 lbs. Due to his illness he is now down to 5 lbs. At one point he even went down to almost 4 lbs. He is skin and bones right now. And we don't have a hypoglycemia problem. In all his almost 14 years we never had one. Giving a dog nutrical (?) can do more harm than good if given if not necessary.

In my opinion people worry too much about hypoglycemia.

I worry more about puppies than adult dogs. Emma is 4.8 pounds and I don't really worry about it now, although I kept a close eye on her as a pup. My mom's Yorkie was a tiny puppy and ended up having seizures, having to stay at the emergency vet, etc., so I won't say that it didn't concern me with Emma. It was a scary thing to see. If I hadn't experienced it already, I probably wouldn't have given it as much thought as I did with Em. It's certainly not something I care to deal with again.

Hope Kodie is feeling better soon!

Lori, i would give pepcid for the tummy rumbling and i would order Animal Essentials Ginger/Mint tonic to keep on hand for the future...that's what i give my fluffs if they have rumbling tummies and it works faster than pepcid and is holistic. I would give unflavored pedialyte or crushed ice, with hold food for 24 hours for his GI system to rest and make some boiled chicken and rice or boiled ground beef and rice and feed very little several times a day. If still not eating and vomiting take him in to the vet. Does he have a fever? I hope Kodie starts to feel better soon.

Thank you so much for all of your advise April. I am going to make some boiled chicken and rice for him tonight and offer him some in the morning. I just got back from Target and ended up getting some unflavored pedialyte and some Pepcid AC...I had a feeling that I would end up with a pink dog if I tried giving him the Pepto...he's not the most cooperative when it comes to giving meds!!

I'm sorry about your Alex. I didn't know that he was sick..:( Sending some healing thoughts his way. I didn't know that Nutrical can do more harm than good if it's not given when necessary. I've never heard that. What's the reason??

I worried much more when my 2 were puppies too, but I still can't help worrying even now. I guess the worrying never ends...:( That must have been terrifying for you and your mom to see her Yorkie having seizures. I'm sure that will never leave your mind...:(:( Thanks for your well wishes for Kodie!

Lori, so sorry to hear about Kodie:( It's really hard when they are sick and we don't know what to do to help them. Hope the Pepto works so he feels better in the morning. I think once they reach a year or more you don't have to worry quite so much about Hypoglycemia. I know first hand how scary that is as Sammy had one shortly after we got him. Sometimes these guys know when they should eat or not. I would worry more about him drinking something than eating for now. Let us know how he's doing.:grouphug:

You've received some great advice from the ladies of MT........I just saw this thread and don't know how in the world I missed it. Hope Kodie gets to feeling better real soon!

I use pepto for mine and it works everytime. But I grind mine up and put it in cheese or in their food. When they aren't eating, I use the liquid but what a mess it can make if they jerk away!!! UGH!!!

Hugs to Kodie!!!!!:hearter:

Thanks, ladies! He is much better this morning. I gave him the Pepcid AC last night along with some Pedialyte. He did eat a little chicken and rice this morning (well, more chicken than rice actually!! He tends to pick out the chicken and leave lots of the rice!!) I just gave him a little more and he ate most of it. His belly was gurgling a little this morning but not anymore. I am really impressed with how quickly the Pepcid helped his tummy and I will make sure I always have that on hand for them. Thanks again for all of your great advice ladies!! You are all the BEST!! I am so happy to be a part of this great MT family! :)

Great tip April!! He is a little bugger and I chop the pieces up as small as I can but he still pushes the rice around and just eats the chicken! From now on, I will put it in the blender and outsmart the little guy!! :awink:

:hmmm: Rehomed?? :scratchhd::scratchhd: Well, like my father always says, "be careful what you wish for because you just might get it!!" :awink: He is on the plane right now. He only has one carry on filled with his favorite beds, blankets, sweaters (that he absolutely hates), warm winter coats, jammies, toothbrush and toothpaste. He is rather picky so I sent some of his food along as well. Oh, and he only goes up the stairs but he can't come down. And, finally, he is an EXCELLENT guard dog with a fantastic set of lungs!! :awink: Don't forget to send me pictures!! :awink: Enjoy!! :)

Kodie won't need any winter wear here, no stairs either, & he will have homecooked meals in place of dry kibble. What you fail to include was a small photo of yourself so he won't forget who you are  And as an exchange for Kodie, I'll kindly return Sue's owl, & your hawks (since no yard or trees to perch on) along with bonus crows, & vultures coming your way :D No need for any thanks, Texans are giving folks like that, we go the extra mile :lol2:
