Hello, I've read some things that say Morkies are susceptible to hypoglycemia when they are puppies and should be given Nutra-cal as a supplement. Mine is healthy, 13 weeks, and weighs just over 3 lbs. Is this something I want to do or keep on hand as a preventative? Or do I need not worry about it because he's at a good weight? TIA!

Hi there! Yes, you definitely want to make sure you have Nutracal on hand but it's not necessary to give it to him regularly. You just need to make sure that he eats frequently and he should be fine. I got Kodie at 16 weeks and he was barely 2 lbs and he never had any hypoglycemic episodes....thank God! I still keep a tube of it though just to be on the safe side! :)

I totally agree with Lori!!! Also it isn't just the morkie breed that have low blood sugar problems........it can happen to any "little" breed dog! :)

I did not know that :) It's been so long since I've had to worry about stuff like this LOL I'm trying to read up on everything and get the place ready, so that I'll be totally prepared when he gets here. Of course, I'm sure you can never prepare yourself enough for one of these cuties LOL

Good advice on the Nutrical. Sammy was 12 weeks and 3 pounds when we got him. He ate really good but one morning I was sitting on the couch watching him play with Belle and I notices he was walking kind of funny, like kind of a stagger. I picked him up right away and his eyes wouldn't focus on me and he just wasn't right. I grabbed the Nutrical and put some on my finger then in his mouth. With-in just a few minutes he was fine. I'm a diabetic and this kind of thing happens to me if my sugar drops too low. It was beginning to happen when I first got him and I didn't have nutrical so I put a little white Karo syrup on my finger and that worked too but the nutrical works best. Are you going to keep a collar on your little one? I have some for Sammy that I put on him because they have little Bells on them so I know where he is. That's the only purpose I use them for and they are actually cat collars and the most important thing is they are break-away incase he gets it caught on something. I also never put him in his crate with a collar on. I have little vests for Sammy and Belle that I got a Petco for going out with a leash. They go on so they fasten in the back. they have a triple fastener, snap together hook, velcro and a double D ring for the leash. It's a safety thing as when you are walking if a big dog would come after your baby you can safely lift him up to you. Good luck with your shopping list and mostly have fun, I love shopping for my two.

Awww, that would have scared me to death :( I'm glad he was ok. I'll definitely get some and keep it on hand :) I was going to get him one of those harnesses for walking outside, because I keep reading that collars aren't good for them, but the little vests sound like a great idea and probably more comfy :) I'm going to get him microchipped in case he ever gets out without his tags (God forbid). I just learned that the vet he'll be going to does nationwide pooch alerts, just like amber alerts, if he gets lost! What an awesome idea! :D

Can I ask, is Nutrical for puppies only or is this something I should have for my retired girl. She is 2 years old and I will be getting her in about 2 weeks. She has just weaned her babies and the breeder told me she should be ready to go if everything is good.
I am very excited and have everything ready for her.

Nuti-cal is good for any age. I have a very nervous, anxious little one that if I take her to a new place I give her a tiny bit of it. It is most needed for puppies but theres alway exceptions.

:goodpost::goodpost: Jaspers vet wanted me to give him the nutracal twice a day, at first I did but after reading up on it I decided to only use when needed. I feel I made the right decision even though his vet got annoyed when I told her I was only giving it to him as needed. Mommys know best!!
