Well I pleased to announce that last night I got very brave and trimmed Babe's nails w/o any problems.

He had just gone to sleep at 8:00 p.m., and w/n 4 mins. the task was done.

I felt I had mastered the world.

So weekly I will trim if needed; if not at least 2-3 times monthly or when needed.

Me too!!:o I really am so scared to cut them..I pay the 6 bucks at Petsmart, she showed me where the pink is on the nail and said to leave a liitle more on before the pink thats how you know you wont hurt them, but I am still to nervous. I remember when my kids were little sometimes I would make a mistake and cut them to short and the would bleed:( oh lord I got so nervous and it seemed like forever that it would bleed....:(

I cut Paris' nails but there is no way I could do it while she is asleep. She wakes up if I even make the slightest move.

I approach it by doing two a day and giving them a reward when they are done, they are much better doing it that way than to try to do all of them at one time!!! Toby is the hardest as his nails are ALL black and harder to see where the quick is!! Kallie is a breeze to do.:p

It has taken me years to finally get up the nerve to cut my dog's nails! I finally got a decent clipper. (cheapies don't work real well) I was really nervous at first but they can sense that. So I use the , "calm, assertive" attitude that Caeser Millan talks about.

I have only made one nail bleed and that was yesterday! :lol2: Even that wasn't so awful. (at least not for me) I started it by just taking off the tiniest bit at a time till I got better at it. If you do it regularly, that's all you should need to take off anyway, so you shouldn't have to cut a bit chunk off.

It really does make you feel great when you conquer something like this!!! :yay:

It's also easier right after a bath cause the nails aren't so hard.:D

Doesn't that drive you crazy???? One tiny move and I have four little monsters (oh, I mean angels) up and watching my every move. Gee, if ONLY they would sleep through nail trimming.. that is great that yours does!!!

I'll bet you could do it if you tried. :) Sometimes when you're first starting to do it, it helps to have someone else hold the dog - just makes it a bit easier. I don't know you well, but from your posts I've read, I can't believe YOU would be scared to do it!!!! :awink:

Good for you. Nail trimming can be very scary for the trimmor and the trimmee.

When I first got Mia she would let me. I wasn't scared because they are very white still and I can see the quik <sp> but she doesn't let me any more. Doing it sleeping is a joke. When we sleep together all I have to do is change positions and she wakes up never mind cutting her nails.

The nails dont bleed its not sharp when your done it pushes the quick back so eventually the nails get shorter and most dog dont mind it. You can purchase a dremmel at wallmart automotive dept get the cheap one you dont need two speed you only use low speed.

I've found that if I clip one or two a day, they don't mind and I just clip a little at a time. There is a great video of nail clipping on YT I will try to find and post here. It gets easier each time.:D

My mom's dog let's me clip his nails practically without any problem. Miko is scared of the sound, but doesn't mind the clipping. And Emma will not sit still for two seconds to let us clip her nails. But that's the reason why I won't take her anywhere to get this done. I don't trust that a groomer will be gentle with her or Miko. If it takes me an hour to do her nails, then it takes me an hour, but with as fidgety as she is, another person who's not familiar with her won't have the patience and might hurt her :( She doesn't put up a fight for anything else though. She's good at bathing, drying, brushing, cleaning her face, putting up her topknot :) She just doesn't like her nails to be clipped.
