Can anyone help me with this question?

I was wondering if I toast regular white or wheat bread is it okay to give it as a treat? I wouldn't put anything on there like butter. Just plain toast. With so many recalls out there I would like alternatives for treats. Thanks!:)

I don't see why it would be harmful - I give Teddy bits of plain toast(white or wheat what ever i'm eating at the time) and he gobbles it up. He also really likes bagels!! Wheat is in a lot dog foods as fillers (as we all know w/ all that's going on) I think in moderation, as a treat, it's okay b/c you know it is "human grade" and safe. After all, it's not so much a little wheat that is horrible for them, but all the contaminants in it. This probably isn't too helpful!

I don't know whether it is OK or not but I certainly understand looking for alternatives. I haven't bought any thing since all this started. It's so scary. If the toast is OK maybe you could put sugar free pnut butter on it. I have heard that's OK too. But we have to stay away from certain kinds of peanut butter too. It's crazy isn't it?

Thanks for your help:) It really is confusing considering what's going on out there. I appreciate you both taking the time out to read this and replying.

I don't think it would cause harm, but who knows.

I have a recipe for a doggy meat loaf that calls for 2 slices whole wheat bread. So I would guess that the bread would be ok.

Thanks! You have all been very sweet in replying to my post. I will give them both toast as an occasional treat. I will try it out now and let everyone know how it goes. to everyone!:)

Ever since I read this thread I have been searching for where I read white doughy bread is not good for them.. But, do you think I can find it now

I do share my toast with Scrappy but he only gets the crusts not the doughy centre and I never give him bread that has poppyseed etc...... now, again, don't ask me where I read it as I just cannot find the info at the moment. It may have been on a site about IBS as a chronic sufferer I do remember reading that dogs also can suffer from this and bread ie yeast was one of the things to avoid and bread with poppyseed etc can irritate the bowel.

I guess it is better to err on the side of caution when feeding our dogs anything.

Bren, once you find it, can you post it for me? Thanks!

Princess Charlotte only likes toast if it's smothered in butter . She also likes a little peanut butter . I use the bite for me , bite for Charlotte theory - it keeps us both thin :D Sarah

Bread and pasta is actually recommended by vets for my liver compromised yorkie on days that he won't eat his food, and he's never had a problem...Also, bread crumbs are in many recipes for dogs. Now, I know there are some kinds of bread probably wouldn't be good to give, but as far as regular bread, no poppyseeds and stuff like that, I think it's okay.

Last night I gave them each half a piece of toast to see if it agreed with them and so far no problems. I gave them white bread toast plain. LB was so cute because she was just munching on it. Of course, Kira swallowed it whole:D

Well I can tell you one thing. Alex likes it better with butter. He will turn his nose on plain bread, but with a tiny bit of butter no problem. He even likes mayonnaise.
