View Full Version : Disgusted with Wellness

On Tuesday I went to Petco to buy some dry kibble for the kids as backup for when I can’t cook. As I opened the bag guess what I found?!

That’s right cobwebs! First thing I did was check the expiration and it was still good until the end of the year. I instantly took photos and ziplocked the evidence. Yesterday I returned the bag to the store and demanded a refund. I wasn't particularly very happy or nice about it.

And if that wasn't bad enough I found another bag of Wellness on the shelf this time with a marked off price. That Petco tried to sell damaged goods at a 10% discount! not just any kind of goods but a perishable one! There was a huge slit in the back and it was taped over. Who in the world does that? I’m so appalled beyond description!

You know it! The moment I saw that I went to the front and demanded it taken off immediately. What kind of business are they running anyway?

I'm not purchasing from Wellness and definitely not going to that Petco again! No offense to those who love Wellness or frequent Petco regularly but I saw enough in one day and pretty much made up my mind. And BTW, it wasn't some run-down Petco but was actually in a decent shopping area in richer part of town. Below are photos of the bag I bought for my babies and the bag they try to sell off the shelf. See it for yourself - I kid you not.

Ewwwww!!!!!!! How disgusting!! Good for you for taking it back AND demanding that the opened bag with the slit in it be removed from the shelf. If I were you, I would give Wellness a call and let them know what happened. I am sure they wouldn't appreciate their products being sold with a slit in the bag potentially compromising the quality of their product as well as having cobwebs in their product!! Their quality control team definitely needs to be aware of this!!

I totally agree. You should contact Wellness and let them know. I'm sure someone in the top will love to know that their employees need to keep better watch on their product.

I'm not going to keep away from Wellness since my kids are contect with that product. There might have been a tiny tear in that bag or the spider could easily tore into it. If I see more stuff like this then I will definetely switch.

Thanks Thuy!!

 GROSS!!

I would be livid as well!! I JUST (like bought the bag last week) switched Jake back to Wellness CORE

I think I will put him back on Taste of the Wild now..

I do like our Petco here but that is ridiculous!! I will be sure to watch what I'm buying from now on. We have a little pet food boutique (only place I can get TOTW) but they are so expensive I usually go to Petco instead..

OMG THUY!!! I would have raised hell in that petco too. I would have told half the city and i would make sure Wellness knew too. I'm so sorry you had to go through something like that, but you are wise to speak up, even wiser to take photos of everything! You should go on Yelp and write a review, too, just to properly warn everyone who goes there (even post the pictures!!). And I'm sure once people read about it people will learn to double check everything before purchasing... and definitely NOT buy the random marked off products cause ugh, who knows what else they do that with??? So sick!!! Do they think we don't care what we feed our beloved fluffs???

Thanks for the heads up, Thuy. Sorry you had to go through that. I buy the wellness treats and kibbles.. I've never had issues with Petsmart, but now i'm a bit wary when purchasing their food (as i should always be).

I agree with everyone else. You need to contact Wellness and let them know what you bought and where you bought it. They have sales people who have a certain districts and they are suppose to check their products on the shelf. I have found this kind of stuff with Petco before with the dog food. They have cans with deep dents and bags torn and taped. I would contact both Wellness and the main Petco and let them know including pictures. That's disgusting and I would have been really upset too. They don't carry the Fromms that I feed my babies but I wouldn't buy it there anyway.

Boy, definitely contact the Wellness company. I have had problems with PetCo. I bought a small fish tank with filter, etc...a all-in-one type purchase. I paid $49 for it, got home and took it out of the box. I took the top off the tank and it was covered with dry fish tank remenants. Petco sold me a used fish tank!!!! ugh, ugh, ugh....I no longer use them for anything. Takes gall to box up something used and sell it as new....

I bet that was just a lazy employee. That's terrible though, I would have been a tad annoyed. I hope you took it back!! We have been lucky with our petcos and petsmarts around here. I do prefer petco for many things but our food we get at a specialty pet shop.

Well that is just out and out ridiculous and absurd!!! I would have been soooooo upset myself and disgusted.

I use to frequent Petco myself and at some point I had purchased some of their doggie bar treats.....the kids had a fondness for one of the cookies.......well, they have a scoop to use to put the treats in a bag and so I used it, paid for it and took them home. Then when I went to put them in an air-tight container, there was cobwebs and little buggies crawling in and out of the cookies. GROSSED ME OUT!!!!!! Never bought anything from the doggie bar again and I let them know their treats had bugs as well. Did it change anything, Nope!!! But "I" felt better! :p :p

I would definitely contact Wellness and let them know about what Petco is doing with their torn bags of food. There has to be a certain degree of contamination once the contents are exposed to the air. Who knows how long the bag sat in the back with the opened spot before it was resealed and discounted?????

I've decided if the fluffs like the Stella and Chewy's freeze dried food, I will use that for back up if I am not able to prepare and store their home cooked food.........but even then, I am not sure of the shelf life of that product OR if the fluffs like it! But I'm going to find out! :)

Great  I give my two Wellness. I was at Petsmart and I was looking at Innova because it seemed to have better ingredients, but when I was looking at it an employee told me that the company is being sold to Proctor and Gamble and she's not sure if they'll change the ingredients.:(

Muffin seems a little heavy to me, so I wanted to find a different food. I feel like she could lose a pound or two. Boomer is long and lean and I can feel his ribs. Muffin is what we'd call a Teapot...a full teapot. I can't feel her ribs as easily as Boomers. :(

Any Ideas??? I already give her a little bit less food than Boomer.

I would definitely contact Wellness and let them know and i would also contact Petco's corporate office and make them aware of what is going on.

It was sold to P&G over a year ago - Innova, EVO, and Califoria Natural. Innova is what I have fed Emma since she was a puppy and she loves it. I've been watching the ingredients closely for any change and so far, it has remained the same. I understand the distrust of big corporations like P&G, but Innova really is a good quality food. If things change with that in the future, I'll certainly be looking for an alternative, but for now, it has been consistent with what I expect...

Just a quick update on this thread. I've been meaning to but been busy, those of you who know will understand.

About a week after my post I submitted an online complaint to Petco and received a response from their corporate office. They have contacted the store & looked into the situation. I don't shop there anymore.

Nothing from Wellness. Their customer care site did not work and that pretty much says it all for me, no need to bother calling. Their IT people need to work on that page. I no longer make purchases from them either.

Glad to hear that Petco stepped up to the plate and responded to you and said they would at least look into the situation. Shame on Wellness. Totally unacceptable and I admit, I am a bit surprised. So much for customer service.....

I've said in another thread that I have a friend who has a natural health pet store and she watches foods, ingredients, sales of companies and everything connected to pets like a hawk watches where a rabbit runs.

She prefers feeding raw but suggests Great Life to her customers if kibble is preferred. She also carries Evangers which she says is a good brand. Also Solid Gold. I'm trying to remember what else she carries and recommends but can't think of more right now.

Since CiCi doesn't have any teeth, I feed her the Primal nuggets and she does very well on them.

If anyone wants me to ask her any questions about various brands, I'll be glad to do it. She stays up to date on all of it and has worked in a vet office too.

Oh, I wanted say "bless you" for reporting the dog food you bought. I don't know about Wellness or their corporate office but at least you got a response from Petco.

Refusing to shop there and telling others about your experience is the best thing to do. Word of mouth, good or bad, is the best advertisement!

Wow! I'm going to triple check any food I get for Fifi now. That's so bad! I don't normally go to Petco just because all the Petco's I've been to has had rude employees and I didn't like it. I go to Petsmart more and I've never seen them have a ripped bad of food for sale. So wrong! I'm sorry that had to happen to you!
