Sammy had developed several big mats, especially behind his ears. I figure probably from his collar and mostly cause that's where Belle grabs when they are playing rough. I was scared to even start as I can't stand to make him cry or hurt him. I thought I may have to cut them out which scared me as a couple are way close to his ear. I have a comb that I bought when I had my Schnauzer. It's called a Shed Ender. It's basically a comb with a razor blade on it. I didn't even know if you can get them anymore but I looked them up on google and they are $10.00. I used Cowboy Magic and worked on small sections at a time, holding the hair next to his ear so it didn't pull. The only time he cried was cause he wanted down to play with Belle. She's not really a big help and she's very nervous that she's next:eek: I can't believe how well this thing works. It cuts through part of the mat and it comes out but almost all the hair stay. I just worked slowly and he laid on my lap while I did it. I stopped once in awhile to give him a little treat. Just wanted to share this as I can't believe how great it works. Sammy is greatful too. I thought I was going to have to shave him down:( I'm going on the web site and write a really good review.

Sue, do you think it does miracles or only small matts here and there. JiJi is close to be shaven down so I'm willing to spend $10 bucks on something before she's shaved.

Sounds like a great product!! :)
I really think I am lucky with Mitzy because she doesn't mat that bad and if she does mat they usually fall right out with some cowboy magic and a nice comb through. Even if I don't get to brushing her everyday, I DO comb her face and neck (where her collar is) everyday because she can get some nasty mats there.
Give Sammy some extra treats for being such a good boy while mommy brushed him!! :D

I love Cowboy Magic and it's not just for small matts, it for all over matts too. When my friend's maltese was changing coat her hair was a matted mess and i told them not to bathe her because it was felting the matts and making them tighter, i told them i would take her a work on her she looked like she had one huge afro and they wanted to keep her coat long. Well now they know the work involved in keeping a dog in coat so now Gabana is kept in a puppy cut. I worked on her for 5 hours a day for a week giving her lots of time in between and i saved her coat thanks to Cowboy Magic and then another time i went to visit my mom for 3 weeks and left my husband and son in charge of the pups and Riley and Noelle were both in coat and when i got home they looked like sheep because of the matts. I bought a couple of tubes of the Cowboy Magic and used it on Riley and Noelle and was able to save both of their coats with it. The only thing is if you have to use alot like i did then the pups are very greasy and you need a good clarifying shampoo to get the Cowboy Magic residue out, other than that it's wonderful. I bought mine at a feed store, but i thought i read somewhere that someone had found it at Walmart.

Some people on YorkieTalk mentioned rubbing corn starch into the matt before trying to comb it out, and it supposedly made it much easier to comb.
I haven't tried it, but thought I'd pass it along.

It's always nice to find something that works! I will use cornstarch in the topknot hair when i'm breaking down hairspray from show topknots. Cowboy magic is good too. I've had the matted afro messes and they are sure a challenge to get dematted.
Might have to look into this item- always looking for something good to try!

I was really frustrated with Sammy's mats too. He gets alot of them from playing with Belle. I hadn't used this for awhile, I kind of forgot about it as I had used it with Abby (my Schnauzer) I thought I'd try it with Sammy and I used Cowboy Magic to help and it worked great. I still have a few in his other ear to do but my hands were hurting (stupid arthritis) I held the hair between the mat and his skin so it didn't pull and he was so good and just laid on my lap once he found out it didn't hurt. It's well worth the $10.00. I'm going to order another one cause I think this one is a little dull from using it so much before.
