I have been trimming Nikki and Kodie myself since all of you gave me the confidence to try it myself. However, I am not quite sure how to do the paw pads. I attempted to trim Kodie's today with a pair of small blunt tip scissors but I don't know how much to trim. I just tried to get a picture to post to show you how much I cut but he is less than cooperative. Do you use scissors or a small hand held trimmer? I do have a small trimmer but they are both scared of the noise and run when I turn it on. Any advise would be greatly appreciated!

Here I am again to save Lori:lol2: or more to the point..Kodie and Nikki:lol2:
My two are also afraid of my small trimmer. I use the blunt end scissors too. I trim the hair about even with the pad. I lay the scissor kind of flat so there is a little pressure to push the pad out of the way and trim. You don't have to get way down in between them, just enough so the pad is what hits the floor. Hope that helps, that's what I'll be doing tonight between batches of fresh crunchies:D Need I say more? I can hear Kodie and Nikki calling my name already:lol2::lol2:

There's my savior!! :D It's Sue to the rescue!! THANK YOU, THANK YOU!! Sounds like I did it right....well, for the 2 paws he allowed me to touch, that is! :o I will try and get the other 2 tomorrow. He had to be fed treats the whole time I was touching his paws. Good thing he's cute! :awink: I figured it was time to tackle the paws when he kept skidding across the hardwood floors.... :scratchhd:

Sounds like Belle and her feet. I don't know what she thinks I am going to do to her but she just gets wild. Denny almost has to lay on her. I have tried the trimmer on her and if dogs could fly, that would be Belle flying up and down around the room:mad: I've been playing with her feet since I got her at 12 weeks but she doesn't care, she doesn't want them touched. I was reading about that "thunder Jacket" and saw some people post of FB that it really works. They said they use them for things like nails and anytime your dog would be nervous or scared about something. If it worked It would so be worth trying for Belle. Anyone else know anything about them?

I use the blunt scissors as well to do the pads, just trimming it even with the paw and checking to make sure that there are no matts inbetween the pads. I don't have a trimmer. None of mine "like" the idea of having their pads trimmed but as "packleader" I get the job done. The more you do it, the more they accept (not like) the process. :)

I have to do this today. Mickey just did an unintentional moonwalk across our kitchen floor and I'm so scared I'm gonna accidentally snip his paw pad while doing it. I have the perfect pair of scissors for it - it's just the matter of both me working up the courage and he trusting me enough with a sharp shiny object that looks like it'll make a good chew toy (it has rubber handles - just my luck).

WISH ME LUCK! I'll let you know how it comes out, and thank you for the tips on here. I'm sure they'll help me out a bunch.

I use hand held clippers because I feel like i can get more hair out of the pads. BUT if they are scared of the clippers, scissors are a safer option :D I also shave the top part of her foot so she doesn't get Clydesdale feet

I do all the grooming on the girls now...except for this...I LOVE what my groomer does to clean up the paw pads and feet (we say it looks like ballerina slippers).

They have only been to the groomer once in Feb this year...they are due now...Abbie has Grinch legs. :lol2:

I use the trimmer on Sofia. lol. She doesn't like it but all I have to do is say to her STAY! lol and she stay trust me on that. Sometime she fights me but I give her a little spank in the butt :o and she stay still. After that loooots of praise, a treat and trimmed pads.:D

Now I would love to learn how to trim around the paw, cuz her coat is getting long and goes under the paw.

See, that's my problem. He's got hair growing between his toes and it's making him slide around on the floor now. It's also kinda wrapping around the sides but it's the in-between hair that's becoming a problem. I might just have them do it for me next week at the vet. I'm a chicken when it comes to stuff like this :D

Sooooo...

I did it myself. And he was so obedient and patient until I got to the last foot, at which point he decided he was done and jerked his paw and unfortunately, I was in the middle of a trim so it pulled out a few hairs and he yelped.

But it surprised me how easy it is once you finally do work up the courage.

I bought a face trimmer like Jess said and it worked very well. I used it also to trim the hair around her coochie, since the groomer never did it. This little trimmer has gave me more confidence though. :D
