Yesterday after a 3 hour car ride we arrived home from Upstate Ny. Around 8pm we went out to dinner. When we returned we noticed Sasha had diarrhea it was very mucousy. At around 11pm I heard her straining in the bathroon and went to check on her. Once again she was doing diarrhea. This time she was straining. I tryed to distract her so she would stop since I noticed nothing else was coming out. About a min later I was cleaning her up and noticed it was extremely swollen. I suspected she had prolapsed rectum. So my boyfriend and I were in the emergency room in about 10mins. When we went into the room it has shrunken up. So the vet believes it resolved itself.
The problem now is we dont know what is causing the diarrhea. She had 2 abdominal radiographs done. Both look to be negative for an obstruction of the intestine. The also did a fecal smear and found it was normal. They sent out a fecal sample and we are still waiting for the results. While there Sasha vomitted. So they gave her Cerenia. She was also sent home with anitbiotics (Metronidazole) which we started this morning. I fed her half her breakfast as indicated by the vet. About 10mins after eating she had flemy diarrhea again. I distracted her to keep her from straining. She has been sleeping the whole day. I have not fed her anything since 11am this morning.
I have work tomorrow morning. I am extremely concerned about it happening again while I am away. I just called the emergency hospital and they arent really giving me any feedback. The oncall dr. said I just have to sit and wait until the fecal results come back.
Im soo scared for my little girl. She just turned 12 years old. I really hope she doesnt need surgery.
Any advice?

Sorry I can't help you here, cuz I found myself dealing with diarrhea last week and had to ask someone here. But they told me to feed small portions of chicken and rice 6 times a day. I guess dividing in 6 portions. Also pumpking is really good. I hope someone here can help you soon.

I have not had any experience with rectal prolapse but in our forum section there is a pet library. I did find it listed there under "help my hound" it says sometimes they go back in like hers did but it may take surgery or stitching to keep it from happening again. You can check around on the forum site and see if anything else comes up. If I can think of anyone else who may be able to help more I will contact them for you. I hope she's better soon, I know it's awful to have to leave them when they are sick. Please keep us updated.

Poor baby :(
Do you think you might need to get a second opinion?

Often Prolapsed rectum is caused by a bladder stone blockage, but you said x-rays were done & nothing showed. Diarrhea can also cause this condition. Did the vet put her on any meds ? Metronidazole is usually prescribed for severe diarrhea. If no meds were given then I would go to another vet. Also I would use probiotics ASAP & try some apple or canned pumpkin to help firm up the stools. Prayers for your baby.

GOOD POSTING!
I know very little about the condition of prolapsed rectum. I hope that she has passed the stone without a problem and that's why it didn't show up on the x-rays. Glad you have meds to help with the diarrhea. I feel so bad for your little girl and hopefully she will be better when you go to work with the meds. Wishing your baby a complete recovery. Please keep us updated on how she is doing.

I called her regular vet to consult with her.

I am not sure about a stone. I know prolapsed rectum resolved on its own. I spoke with the emergency vet and all parasite test came back negative!! yay!!! She has been eating well and acting normal. She hasnt had diarhea since yesterday morning. She didnt poop again until about 5pm today and although it was just a little it was firm. She is on day 2 of 3 days on the antibiotic. I spoke to her regular vet and she agrees with the course of treatment and the test that were performed. Since everything seems to be going good she doesnt see the need to see her immediately. I will be taking her in for her 6mth check up in the next two weeks. Unless something were to change.
Thank you all for well wishes and for your help. :)

I will be posting some helpful information in the Maltese Talk Library on the prolapsed rectum condition in dogs. Hopefully you will find some intersting and informative reading and it may help another person with a similar problem with their fluff!
Glad to hear that your baby is doing better!!!! YAY!!!!
