I notice when I give LB her baths, I tend use, I feel, half the bottle of shampoo and almost all the conditioner, just to give her enough to cover her coat and lather. I dilute the shampoo and conditioner once I cover her body to lather but it just doesn't seem to be enough product. As you know, their grooming products cost more than ours :sidesplit: LOL! After 2 weeks, before you know it, I have to buy shampoo/conditioner again!
Is it just me?

LOL, thanks Carol! With Kallie and Toby's hair you don't feel that way? LB's hair is short so I don't think I should need to use so much, but I just don't feel enough lather.

I can honestly say that I use double the shampoo on the dogs as to what I would on my own hair for sure. I first wet the coats thoroughly and then pour the shampoo straight down the middle of thier backs and run my fingers through the hair to distribute it. Then I add a little more water to get the lather worked up. Sometimes I have to use a litte more than other times but for the most part, if you were serious about 1/2 a bottle each wash.........no have never had to use that much during the wash cycle!!! LOL Now I do go heavy on the conditioner with Kallie as she has such a cottony coat but only use it on the very ends of her hair heavy and only lightly on the hair closest to the body! For Toby the minksheen is doing great and I only use it and no conditioner on him and his hair is looking great. Maybe use an ounce on him, but he is a little guy. Kallie I estimate I use about 2 ounces max of shampoo on her.:hearter:

That's how I feel! I use more shampoo and condtioner on LB than my own hair, and my hair is pretty long.
I've tried that, putting shampoo along their back and then distributing it along their body. I just feel it's not enough.
Maybe I need to try other shampoos...

I have found different brands to be VERY different. Some AREN'T meant to really lather and of course others are. Maybe the shampoo your using isn't puposed to really lather up.
Just a thought, and I would probably change brands if your not happy :D

Using so much extra might not be too good for their skin. I know on people all the soap and detergent sulfates are harmful in excess. On human shampoos that get tested on animals, theres always a more harmful effect on animals than humans. The detergents used are always irritants to the skin thats why most good human shampoos will tell you how much to use.
I know the shampoo I use for my puppy has sodium laureth sulfate which is milder than lauryl sulfates. Lauryl sulfates are mainly used because they make more bubbles and give that good clean feeling. Lauryl sulfates are more irritating also. Like when I use store brand shampoos they're always a mix of sulfates, but a salon shampoo like Nexxus will only have one surfactant or detergent.

I just checked my Arbonne shampoo and it has the Ammonium laureth sulfate. The old PetSilk shampoo has both, laureth and lauryl. But at least it has a lot of other natural ingredients. The new PetSilk has less natural ingredients. When I finish what's left of the PetSilk I will try my own shampoo on Alex.

I hate to say this but when you use human shampoo's you really need to dilute it. Depending on the hardness of your water depends on how much water to add. The PH balance in human shampoo's are very harmful to the dogs skin and coat. With by diluting you are really not going to get the suds that you are wanting. Here again I am suggesting using a good quality dog shampoo. I have tried many human products with not very good results. Darlii is a good example of the difference a good shampoo made for dogs can do. I switched her to the CC Clean Start and am seeing a tremendous change in her coat. For the better. I guess I should be a representative for CC because I am a firm believer in them.........lol Like me and my mentor were talking about just the other day. It is amazing how much we will spend on our dogs, but do not want to spend half as much on ourselves. And oh that is so true. :D

Most of additional shampoo botanicals don't really do much aside from giving you a good smell. I definitely agree with the thing about human shampoo ph. The only reason people can use such harsh shampoos is because human hair is really tough. Also for any shampoo to be effective it still has to be acidic. I'd assume that many human shampoo for delicate or dry hair should be okay for a dog only because those shampoos are less acidic. I used my hair conditioner on Enzo and I got much better results than the conditioner i actually bought for him. He also smelled 10 times better lol. The only reason I didn't use my shampoo was because I ran out and only have pantene left which I know is very acidic.

I have heard a lot of horror stories about the pantene ruining the coats.

Yeah I can definitely believe that because its such a harsh shampoo. I really shouldn't use it on my hair either since my hair's curly but I ran out of my other shampoo and have been too lazy to go up the block and buy more lol.

I have very curly hair and the new Pantene for curly hair is great.....also the Pantene Ice shampoo & conditioner has been a godsend since I started using it about 2 months.....they are softer, whiter and smell great!!!
