We have a friend that went to Indiana on May 11th to pick up a male teacup Maltese. I wish I had known before they did this to discuss with them how there isn't really a 'teacup' Maltese. When they got there the breeder told them the little guy (whom they named Luigi) wasn't feeling too well, but it wasn't anything serious. They took him home anyway and on Saturday night they were at the Emergency Vet office and by Sunday morning the little guy died!!!! All this happened on Mother's Day!!!!
Their 3 children were hysterical and when they called the breeder he offered no help or a refund and said it was their fault. My friend stopped payment of the charge card right away.
I would not have taken that puppy home if he was sick. I would have made the breeder keep him until he was better. You'd think the breeder would have called them and told them about the sick puppy. I mean, they traveled from the Chicago area all the way to Indiana to have this happen.
I feel so sad for them. I don't know what to say to them.

There are a lot of BYB out there that pray on the fact that when the family gets to the baby they will get attached to it. That they will not be held responsible for what they have produced. It has happened to me. Zeek came from a puppy mill himself, and the woman knew that I would not have the heart to leave him in those horrible conditions. He has been sick his whole life. Thank God that they put the puppy on there credit card, and were able to stop the transaction. But that still does not hide the fact that here is this family that went and got this baby and had it die on them. Those poor children. It happens everyday and it is our responsibility to get the word out about breeders such as this. I guess that I am rambling her, it just makes me so very angry when these poor families and most important children get hurt. And all because of some one wanting to line there pocket with the all mighty dollar.........:(

:( Im so sorry Cheryl, it is awful:(
BYB and puppymills are just terrible places. This is why I am always pasting links to reputable breeders, I know most don't listen but in the end it will cost you more than you can imagine..
I will keep your friends in my thoughts,
Andrea

Oh no! I wonder what was wrong with him. I am glad they got to stop payment. The breeder should have taken him to the vet himself, it is no telling how long the little thing was sick before they picked him up.

Awwwwwwwwww, Cheryl, it breaks my heart to hear this story!!! That is horrible.........:( :( :( I'm sooooooooo sorry for your friend and family!

I had a friend buy a "designer" dog at a flea market (just like you, I didn't know they were looking or I would have warned them) and it came home sick. But they were able to get her healthy and she is fine today but it gave them a good scare. This byb was a bit better about things and helped pay for some of the medical care but still! My friend promised me she would never buy from a byb again!!!

Cheryl, I am so sorry your friends have gone through this, please let them know that a Maltese from a GOOD breeder wouldn't have health issues. I so hope they don't give up on getting another furbaby.
I am really happy to read they have stopped payment, that would make it even worse.
Give them our love and prayers

Some breeders dont care about the dogs. They are in it only for the money. That is a terrible story. Poor puppy. I would have left the puppy also or chosen another healthier one. Then again, they may all be sick. :(

In the long run, its better to spend the money on a reputable breeder. When you go to these so called BYB and pet stores, you just end up paying more in the end:( Everyone should save their money and their heart and go the right way..I hope your friend is okay now Cheryl. I hope she finds the perfect puppy:hearter:

Thanks everyone for the kind thoughts. They are still so upset, esp. the kids. The kids had come to our house at Christmas and met Jack. They told their parents back then how they wanted a Maltese. I think they are taking some real down time from all this and see what happens at the end of summer.

Wow Cheryl I feel bad for your friends. I can't imagine....I felt close to Mia just by meeting her when she was 2 weeks old.....I don't know what I would have done if something would have happened to her after actually having her with me. I'm glad they put a stop payment on the card. I hope their 2nd time around they have better luck and get a very healthy and happy pup! I hope they don't give up on the idea of getting a beautiful Maltese.:hearter:

Cheryl, how is your friends family doing? Are the kids OK? I feel bad for getting on my soap box when you first posted this thread. And I just want to apologise for that. I sure hope they are all doing better and can find a healthy baby when the time is right.

Becky, please don't feel like you need to apologize for your opinion. I'm very thankful that we can speak our minds here. What you said was all true, I only wish they had talked to me first before they did this. I feel so bad for the kids. They had wanted a Maltese puppy for quite some time.
