My View on Breeding your pets

I have been helping a few people with rearing puppies lately. I feel the need to make a statement as to my feelings about breeding pets. I do not believe that it is good to breed your pets. I am strongly against it. There are several reasons as to why but I will not go into them here. I did not and will not mind helping anyone that needs my assistance. But I need to make my views on breeding pets perfectly clear. I breed to better the breed. And do not in any way condone the breeding of pets in homes that have a male/female pair. Or because you want a baby from a pet that you have. When you breed in such a manner, you are more than likely not going to know about the genetic makeup or what the history behind the dogs are. Another thing is, if you received the dog from a reputable breeder there is a 99% chance that you will be breaking your contract by breeding. And if I were to say that it is OK, I would not be a reputable breeder myself. And that is something that I pride myself in.

I hope I have not hurt any one's feelings here. But I needed to make this fact know to the people on this forum and people that my visit.

People don't think about it that way Becky. They are ignorant. If you knew how many times I have been asked if I was going to breed Mia you would be shocked! I get "oh they would be so cute, so little" or "your losing a meal ticket" or other dumb things. (neither one of my dogs have a no breed clause) I won't breed Mia because 1. she is to little I wouldn't want anything to happen to her, 2. I don't want the responsibility or the heart break of rearing a litter of pups (I use to breed Rotties) 3. I personally don't like the way they look after they have given birth 4. I don't want her to get tumors or cancer by not spaying her. 5. I specifically got her as a pet.

My neighbor came by yesterday and saw Mia was recovering from her operation and frowned at me and shook her head. Wait until I tell her Cody is next!:lol2: :lol2:

Thank You very much. That is such a sweet statement. Everyone that I have came in contact and/or gotten to know here are wonderful people. But you never know who may visit or become a member in the future and think that I condone it because they did not get to know me. I think very highly of all of the people here that I have gotten to know. And once again I want to say thank you to everyone for opening your arms and hearts and letting me become part of the magnificent family.

Becky, iam so glad that you have helped me so much, and that you did not ask any question before you helped me, i could of been one of these people that just want a money making machine, for people like me who thinks that they are just (doing the right thing) for their pets you are so helpful, i have said it before and i will say it again, you ALL are wonderful people, i honestly think that i would not have any puppies left (maybe even Milly) if it wasnt for all your advice, so thank you, i just hope that others can understand how important to breed the correct way and for the right reasons,:hearter:

Bec it is so easy to see why alot of people do breed their pets. Sammy Maree and Max are both desexed, because I didn't want to do the whole puppy thing, and also because I found a forum and learnt that in the best interest of the pup, you shouldn't breed.
Before that, I had heard it was always better to let then have at least 1 or 2 litters before spaying the female, some people say one thing while others say different.
I now also look at your pics of your beautiful babies ( and others) and then thought of watching these beautiful creatures grow up around me, and think wouldn't that be wonderful ( I would enjoy it). Then I read the sad stories of loss and heartache and thank god I decided NOT to breed my babies and to have them desexed.
I DO understand why people do it. Some do it, to make a buck and that I don't agree with, and others do it for the love and experience, and not know any better, those people I do understand how you feel, at times I have thought " What beautiful babies my Sammy Maree and Max would have, and how much fun would it be". I can't breed mine and wouldn't, out of FEAR of something going wrong, I couldn't bare lossing my babies, I just couldn't.

Bec you have been so wonderful helping members here with their babies and haven't judged. I think your wonderful for that. It shows just how much you care. HUGS

When I fist came here thats all I wanted was it to be a friendly, nonjudgmental place where everyone could feel comfortable. I want everyone to be able to post whatever questions they may have and feel comfortable about it, it makes me happy. That aspect of MT will never change I wont let it..:D We are happy you are with us also . Your knowledge and compassion will be a nice addition here...

It is only through groups such as this that I have come to understand what responsible breeding is. Previous to getting my Bogie, I thought people that bred and showed dogs were snobs like people who only buy designer clothes or handbags. I had no understanding of genetic problems, and that this was something that could be controlled. I knew puppy mills were bad, so I went to the newspaper to find my maltese. I now know Bogie came from a BYB. I do believe this women loved her dogs, but I doubt any research or thought went into the breeding. The breeder told me the female was registered, but the male was not. I was so enthalled with Bogie, that I asked very few questions. The only thing this woman wanted from me was cash. I never knew to ask for a health guarantee or anything else. Bogie was 8 weeks old. His sister had gone to her new home the week before. Thank God for people like Becky and many others that helped me take care of Bogie. There were a number of health issues and a vet that I feel did not know enough about Maltese that I had to deal with. Thank you to all of the Becky's out there that helped me raise the most wonderful companion ever. Bogie is so much more than a dog or pet, and without help and advise from some of you out there, he wouldn't be with me today.

Most pet owners are not uncaring just not informed. The smart ones ask for help. The others just think they know it all.

I couldnt agree with you more! I had done some research before getting Mia but had once I found you guys I realized I knew next to nothing about caring for her. This is my first pet EVER and I am so glad to have such a wonderful group to help guide through puppyhood and the wonderful years to come with Mia. We BOTH really appreciate it!
