View Full Version : Gonna do it myself!

My Leo went to the groomer for the first and last time. He kinda looks like a poodle now. Sooooo, I'm gonna do it myself! Well, not yet cause his hair is short.
My list...
Grooming table - small, lazy susan type.
clippers - Andis AG-2 two speed (what's best?)
Scissors - Miracle Coat (are these okay and do they stay sharp?)including thinning, straight, curved and small with blunt tip for eyes, ears etc.
Bottle of wine - to prevent shaky hands.
Am I missing anything?

Awwww, I could have told you to stay away from them "pro" groomers! But as everybody else says: "It will grow back."
Sounds like you have everything you need........assuming you have brushes and combs. I do not use thinning scissors nor clippers; I do all cutting, which as most know is next to nothing (ROFLMSBO), with scissors. Also a spray bottle mixture of conditioner and water to keep the coat wet when brushing in between baths.
Thanks for the suggestion of the bottle of wine, I will have to add that to my little collection of grooming items!!! Any particular type of wine??

I groom both of my babies myself and I love it, and hey, if you make a boo boo, it will grow back and it is a learning curve.
Good luck and enjoy.

I just got the small ball tip miracle coat scissors. They seem very sharp so I think I will order the other type of scissors. Look out Leo! Here I come!
I'm depending on you guys for help when the time comes! I'm determined to do this but like I said, it may be awhile.

I think all you ladies that do your own trimming and grooming are very brave! Especially cutting the bum area. I send LB to the groomer for a trim every 4 weeks. I think I tend to get too scissor happy.

I have a lot of practice. I do my daughter's hair, two son's hair and hubby's hair................I know the groomer's would go crazy with cutting on Kallie or Toby so I'm doing it all myself. Yep lots of work but the end result is "exactly" what I want!:D

So, how do you do the bum if you groom her at home? Scissors? Razor? That's the area I'm most concerned about. Since I'm growing out her hair, that area I'm hesitant about. The paws are no problem. When I tried to trim her bum, she kept edging away from me. What do others do?

I use my husbands beard trimmmer ( not that he has a beard, really got no Idea why I bought it in the first place, lol). I hold their tail up and firm and if they try to walk or sit I either lift the tail higher so they can't or I pull them back by their tail. It doesn't hurt them, but it is VERY important that they know this is business and you ain't mucking around. Mine will stand perfectly still for their butt shave.
Just be firm. The butt trim is soooooooooooooooooo easy, practice, just keep on practicing. Don't give up cause the first few didn't work out, you will get the hang of it and save alot of money.

Wow, I come back to some great input. I too have noticed that holding the tail up when trimming the butt seems to tell them that this is business, DO NOT MOVE! I use scissors. Using husband's beard trimmer? OOH I'd be too scared if I got caught using it:eek: !

Hubby doesn't use it and he doesn't mind passing it down to the kids. He says " It's better than getting out dangle berries":lol2: :lol2:
Andrea, Carol, no need to be scared, the trimmer is really really easy. I have NEVER cut either of mine.

YES but you have the wrong impression.............I would ONLY use the trimmer for around the butt and the paws and Toby's ear hair around the top third need to be kept trimmed so the weight of the hair doesn't cause his ears to droop.
They will always be long haired..................always.:D

It is a braun electric shaver with a beard trimmer attached. I will post a pic of it later so you can see.
Honestly Carol, it is quicker, easier and less fuss.

I just use scissors to cut around everything but it takes patience and time so thought it would be quicker and easier if I could get the hang of the trimmers............takes me long enough just to brush them out each day.
