Oh, please help me. My husband, who never asks for anything for himself, has his heart set on letting Sampson father a litter. He wants one of Sammie's babies. Sammie is a beauty and an extrememly sweet tempered dog. He is very low maintenance and is always content to just sit in my lap or play around the house. He is as smart as he can be and potty trained!! However, I have read enough about breeding to know just how serious it is and that novices should really keep their noses out of the process and certainly had NO intention of breeding him when we got him. But, my hubby really wants a baby from Sammie. So, how do I go about finding a mommy? Sammie is registered with the ACA not the AKC - don't know why... He is about 9 pounds and gorgeous!! How can I achieve this? I am very torn over this!!

I would never do it because there is a chance he won't be a loving house pet, but rather a marking machine after he fathers a litter. Also, you would have to find a mother who is 9lbs or over so she would safely be able to carry Sampson's babies. Its over the breed standard and you may not even find a Maltese mom who is over 9lbs who is not spayed.

OMG!!!! Bad idea.
First of all you are correct in that novice owners should NEVER try to purposely breed their dogs. Eventhough your Sammie is wonderful, the first rule of thumb is that the sire (male) is ALWAYS smaller than the female. That way she will have a better chance to not have problems whelping (delivering) the pups. So many little females have to have c-sections and it is a very risky business for the inexperienced. I sincerely doubt that you will find a reputable breeder to breed their female with Sammie, one major reason is because of his size. Now don't get me wrong I am not personally attacking his size, I am speaking only the facts and info on reputable breeders VS back yard breeders. Also, you said how sweet Sammie is at this time. Breeding him will only bring out any "masculine" behaviors that are currently safely harbored inside, ie marking his territory. He will MOST likely start marking (peeing) all over your house. Also, if you find a back yard breeder to mate him with, you would have to make sure she has special tests to know for sure that she does not have any veneral diseases. Yes, that is correct. There is a VD in female dogs (I can't recall the name) that makes little male dogs sterile and also causes bad infections. BAD NEWS!!! I would over ride hubby on this matter if you want to be sure to keep your little Sammie sweet and healthy. Do yourself and Sammie a favor, have him neutered. Otherwise, you are also risking his health later down the line. Cancer rates in unspayed/unneutered little dogs is very dangerous. I hope I have not hurt your feelings. I am honestly trying to save you a lot of heartache.
Let us know what you decide.
