Don't use anything with antibiotic for tear staining before they are adult and have all the adult teeths. If you do, there is a good chance that the new teeth will be stained. Also the tear staining might go away when they finish teething.

I also use the Tylan which is also an antibiotic that is much cheaper and is also just as effective. Again as mentioned by others, wait until the baby teeth are all gone so that they adult teeth will come in healthy. You risk permanent damage to the secondary teeth if the angels glow/eyes/Tylan is used too soon and before they are done teething.

I use this and it really works! Just follow the directions on the bottle. The first thing I noticed was my Chloe stopped having brown tearing and no more eye boogers. The hair that was already stained remained stained until she was groomed. I only have to give it to her about twice a week now to keep the stains away. I even have pics if you want to see. You can also see pics on the Angel Eyes web site.

Sorry I've not heard of it. I only had to use the tylan for about six weeks and now no staining and haven't had to use it again. I also used less than the suggested amount. But if you use this product do post something for future reference (for us oldbies or newbies).

Actually I used angels eyes and switched to Tylan 40............it is an antibiotic along the same line as the angels eyes but less expensive. I used it on my yorkie(wet hair around the eyes) and my maltese(tear staining). Only used it for six weeks and saw improvement in both of them.

I used the facial wash on Jolie today before her bath. I rubbed it in and let it sit while I washed her body, then I wiped around her face and then rinsed. When she dried, she looked SO much better! The stains aren't all the way gone yet - it will take a few times using it - but I can certainly tell a difference! I'm very happy with it!
It's not bad using it at bath time. It's not something that you would need to use every day or anything.
It gets a thumbs up for me!

hi all
The tylosin based products such as Angels Eyes do work very well but i understand owners concerns about using antibiotics on a long term basis.
I guess that those concerns are highlighted by the fact that angels eyes are very coy about mentioning the antibiotic in thier product.
just make sure that you keep it away from horses- it is fatal to them!!!
We used Angels eyes until it was banned in the UK and the rest of Europe.
a friend recommended another tear stain remover- Angels delight.
The great thing about Angels delight is that it is 100% natural like purifeye. Angels delight however was developed as a holistic "cure" for a wide range of conditions and they discovered that it stopped red tear and coat stains in dogs and cats.
i did find that angels delight took longer to start working than the angels eyes.
you can get more info from here
www.bichonhotel.co.uk/angels_delight
They also recommend using the BARF diet.

Will she eat yogurt??? Sometines giving it in a sweet food helps. If she eats cheese, cut several small pieces, put some of the Angels Eyes on one piece and put another piece of cheese on top and pinch the edges together to conceal the Angel Eyes. You might try putting a little canned food with it in it as well to get her to eat it. I hope some other members will come up with some ideas too!!!

the makers of AE suggest putting the Angels eyes in the drinking water until they get used to it. Tylosin is very bitter so Morkie4's suggestion to use something sweet makes sense. The downside though being that you dont want to increase your dogs sugar intake for too long.

I have used several other things for the tear stain but AE is what works best for me and I really see the results when I look at their pictures.
I give my gang fresh peeled and cut up apple every morning and I sprinkle the AE on the apple and they gobble it up.

Hi Euphoric Eyes
Although there are a couple of companies in Europe (as demonstrated by edwardsupandy) that will offer to sell angels eyes or angels glow it is quite illegal. I guess that the same is true of people who sell viagra, snuff movies, etc..
Before the ban it was everywhere, loads of online stores, high street pet stores and ebay UK. Within days of the word getting out that DEFRA were raiding stores, the other thousands of bottle in the UK miraculously disappeared. :awink:
The legality is not based upon the safety of the product, it is because no where in the world has ever approved tylosin as a treatment for dogs because no one has ever applied for a marketing authority or approval. One would need comprehensive data to show that it is safe in the long term for both dogs and the environment. To date the longest study has been two years and focused solely on the dogs rather than the environment and bacterial resistance.
It was the inventors of Tylosin- Elanco who explained to me that they never applied for a license because the costs are prohibitively high compared to the market returns. Contrast this with the use of Tylosin (Tylan) as a livestock medication and the marketable quantities.
From what I can see Tylosin is a prescription only medicine everywhere- one that has never been approved for use in dogs anywhere.
Vets are legally permitted to prescribe tylosin if they can demonstrate that they have tried all other medications first, and that none of them has worked. In the UK this is called the cascading rule, in the US the Extra-Label rule. The majority of vets will not though because in the event of legal action they will have to demonstrate that the needs of the dog outweigh the risk of bacterial resistance. Most see tear staining as a cosmetic problem and sadly too many would rather perform operations on the tear ducts. If a vet were to prescribe tylosin it would not be in the form of AE or AG as they cannot tell how much the doses are
At one stage I toyed with the idea of becoming a recognised UK distributor of angels eyes but decided against it- I was also disappointed by the advice that I was given from the "horses mouth"- don't tell people about the antibiotic unless they ask. According to the bloke at Elanco failure to make customers aware of the antibiotic is a crime in itself. I am sooo glad that the band did not come in two months later I would have a lot of product that I could not shift.
Incidentally I did once email angels glow to ask them which 50 countries it is recognised in (says it on their website) but they declined to answer.
From what i can see neither AE or AG are legal, by definition, anywhere in the world, not even in the US or Canada. Theoretically it could be banned there too if the authorities decided that it is too widespread in its use.
I have seen posts that point out that things like ibuprofen were once prescription only and now they are freely available but this argument neglects to consider the fact that a lot of money was spent testing ibuprofen on its core market (humans), further that it has an obvious social benefit- the same can not be said of AE or AG. I can not see tylosin based products ever being legal for tear stain removal- thus the makers have never applied for the relevant licenses.
You could contact them to ask but I would expect that you would get a more honest answer from the FDA.
It's a shame- the margins were great!!!
Ps I will try to find out if it is legal in Belgium but I suspect not- especially given that the treatment of medications in the EU is pretty much harmonised.

Hi
Here is the proof
http://www.vmd.gov.uk/General/VMR/regs.htm#
the above covers EC (of which belgium is a member state) and Uk law with regard to pet medication
follow the link to
http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si2008/uksi_20082297_en_1
From that
"Definition of “veterinary medicinal product”, interpretation and scope
2.—(1) In these Regulations “veterinary medicinal product” means—
(a)
any substance or combination of substances presented as having properties for treating or preventing disease in animals; or
(b)
any substance or combination of substances that may be used in, or administered to, animals with a view either to restoring, correcting or modifying physiological functions by exerting a pharmacological, immunological or metabolic action, or to making a medical diagnosis.
"
The legality issue-
"PART 2
Authorised veterinary medicinal products
Placing a veterinary medicinal product on the market
4.—(1) It is an offence to place a veterinary medicinal product on the market unless that product has been granted a marketing authorisation by the Secretary of State or the Agency.
"
I recall that initially AE tried to say that the product does not change the dog's physiology (not true- it kills the bacteria) and that it is therefore not a medicine. This did not wash! They seem to have forgotten that the active ingredient is Tylosin- err.... a medicine.

Hi
The main reason it is banned in europe is that it was never legal in the first place.
Initially invented to fight respiratory diseases in poultry. The makers of tylosin (the active ingredient in AE) Elanco- part of Eli Lilly- applied for a licence to use tylosin (tylan- their brand name) in 1961 as a therapeutic medicine. The FDA in America granted a licence for use on livestock (cows, sheep, poultry, pigs). Elanco had to research the effect of tylosin on a wide range of animals, to see how it would affect other animals. It was from these trials that it was discovered that it cleared up dog stains and that dogs could tolerate very high levels with no negative side effects.
Later they applied for a licence to use it as a growth promoter in the above list of animals. The range of licenced animals has now been expanded to include bees.
Following concerns about cross bacterial resistance the EU banned the use of tylosin as a growth promoter in 1999. It is still legal for this use it in Canada and the USA.
The EU still allows tylosin to be administered for medicinal reasons but only when prescribed as a vet.
Applying for a licence is extremely expensive and during the process the powers that be weigh up the positives with the potential negatives. Elanco nor any other maker of tylosin has ever applied for a licence to use it on dogs or cats. The financial returns would be too low and the authorities are likely to decide that the benefit of no tear stains is far outweighed by the risk of cross resistance.
If approval were to be granted it would be a prescription only medicine.
Whilst it is not approved for animals other than live stock it is often used in dogs, cats, rats, reptiles and even snakes. There is a clause that allows vets to use non licenced products if the licenced products have all been tried first and have not worked. In the UK this is called the cascading rule.
Finding a vet that will prescribe tylosin for tear stains is very rare but possible. Most just see the stains as cosmetic and feel that in the event of a veterinary review panel they would not be able to justify its use.
Products like Angels eyes are extremely unlikely to be prescribed as they would not know how much of the tylosin is being administered.
In February DEFRA decided that the trade of these tylosin based products was unacceptably high and decided to act. They started to raid shops and confiscate stock- there were no prosecutions as they felt that the matter had been dealt with. They could have conducted the raids at any point in the past given that none of the products has a marketing authority.
I had posted web links yesterday which show this but it seems that they are still awaiting moderation.
If you want you can go to vmd.gov.uk and follow links there, eg general info/enforcement.
So in conclusion, the legality of Angels eyes is down to the lack of a valid licence. It is not a comment of the safety of it in and of its self.
I for one think that tylosin is extremely effective at stopping bacteria but can see the wider environmental concerns.
hope this helps.
