Ok girls as some of you know I will be getting my first ever maltese girl soon. Round about the end of July start of August.:D . Im sooooo excited. As I have 3 yorkie girls already I know what I will need for her in the puppy stages. But what I dont know about is what I should get to keep her coat in tip top condition, also what do I use for tear staining. Any Info on the general care of her apperance would be very helpful. Thanks Girls.

Harriett Harriett...you have it under control you are already a wonderful mommy to a bunch of Yorkies. They are basically the same except for the tear stains and the white shadow you will now have. Ok tear stains.....distilled water, you may want to try they unfiltered apple cider vinegar that Carol likes. Clean her face daily (wash & dry) that way the bacteria won't build up. Remember not all but most Malteses stain while teething. No antibiotics until the adult teeth are in and lots of kisses & hugs!!!!! You won't regret it one bit.....if I could I would get 2 more.....LOL

Dont get your knickers in a twist girlfriend:p

Ok, i dont think there will be much difference but what i will say is only buy milky bone treat biscuits....i believe any other treats were a major factor in my kids tearing, now they have minimal tearing:D

Any other questions ask away, all us Maltese lovers/owners will answer pronto for ya!!!!:tounge:

The tear staining may not happen, Nemo never really had any:p only when he was teething. You can't do much about it till she is around 10 to 12 months. Don't worry about that now. Everything else is just learning which being on here for so long you will know.
I can't wait Harriett Im so excited for you..xoxo

Harriet, I am so happy that you are finally going to be a Maltese Mommy!!!! Don't forget to give me your little babies birthdate so I can get it on my calendar asp.

I use stainless steel bowls, distilled water and dog food that doesn't contain all the 'red' ingred. that can cause stains. Jack is on the NB Duck/Potato food.

Good luck!

I like totally agree with Cheryl. RED dyes were completely eliminated from Kallie and Toby's diet(food/treats and they are on Natural Balance Potato/Duck), distilled water with filtered apple cider vinegar, daily face washes for Kallie and of course when they were old enough, the Tylan was given for about three weeks.

Now, kallie has a beautifu white face and Toby benefits too as he does not have that "wet" look around the eyes so many yorkies do!!! Good brushes and good shampoo/conditioners are a must as well!!! I like coat handler and I am going to be trying the CC products when my other products run out. If you are going to keep Bella in a long coat............just let me say one thing.......YAY YEEPEE.........and BRUSH DAILY!:D :D

My little maltese is 4 months old. I work on brushing her daily, which she is getting better at, but she seems to have more knots everyday that I have to work out. My groomer said she has a cottony coat and not to bathe her more than once a month. I don't have this problem with my yorkie, she has a beautiful silky coat. I have been using the Chris Christenson day shampoo. I have seen you refer to a silky shampoo on this forum, is that better and where do I get it? I use the Ice from CC for daily brushing but it doesn't seem to help much. What can I use between baths to help with the knots? Will her coat change as she gets older? Thanks for your advice, I want my baby to be happy and look good too.
