View Full Version : This is my problem...

I know it's my fault...:(
When I take the girls out for their walk, LB ALWAYS barks. It's like she has to let people know she's outside. Very irritating. Sometimes it's a big bark and then sometimes it's a low growl then a bark.
They both get antsy when we get ready to go outside. They see me get their harnesses then they go bonkers. Before we go out I have them sit, we don't go out till they are both calm. But once that door opens, LB barks. Kira doesn't, but when I see my neighbors and stop to talk to them and they try to be nice to her she barks at them. Then LB gets started. Very irritating. I don't know what else to do.
Carlos is in Puerto Rico right now visiting family so I can't take them out one at a time which is what I usually do. So leaving LB is not really an option because she barks till I get back with Kira.
I try to get my babies used to people and other dogs at a young age but it isn't working.
I say it's my fault because both of them do it. Even when Kira was the only baby she still barked at other people.
At home they are great but they both are just not people friendly. Any advice? I hope you don't think bad of me.
I do love them very much and cannot see my life without them.
What am I doing wrong?!

Oh Laurie your not doing anything wrong, some dogs just do this. Nemo does bark when someone enters and I noticed he will keep barking at certain people and not others, I think he really senses who is nice and who isnt.
I dont have this problem when I take him out, maybe you can get some training for them, I dont know anything else Im not good in this training department:( Maybe they are just both really excited, I know it's annoying and frustrating, when Nemo barks I get annoyed also.Have you tried a training aid. Let me tell you I bought one for Nemo and it worked. My neighbor has a dog that I swear Laurie used to bark morning till night:( I gave her the one I bought and it's like magic:D its been a month and you would think they have no dog, when Sandy barks and she isnt supposed to my neighbor says "No Bark" and she stops immediately! Here is what I used

Laurie I think that is normal. Cody when outside sometimes will bark at the trees, the birds, the wind rustling it's a bit embarrassing especially at 10 at night. Mia barks at people and dogs. She will go running right to them and growls and barks, sometimes it looks like she is going to bite the person but as soon as they talk to her she goes in the submissive position. Can't make it out but it's their way of communicating. I wouldn't worry unless it's excessive.

Thank you Andrea, I will stop by Petsmart today and see if they have it. It gets bothersome, I mean I know they bark, they're dogs, but with people we see everyday? It can get embarassing. But I will try that, thanks for the tip. Since it worked for you and your neighbor, it may work for me.:justahug:

Maggie, thank you for your kindness. There are times when I'm glad they do, I know they are being protective of me, but LB barks at children and scares the wits out of them. I don't want kids to be terrified of dogs. It can get excessive to the point where they start barking then gets all the other neighbor dogs barking. But I will try what Andrea recommended.

I think it pretty normal for them to bark when outside their comfy surroundings..........and it may be that she is barking to protect you as well, not just to irritate. Mine will both bark at first but I have trained them with the command "no barking" and "quiet" and they have done really well now, especially with people but Toby still has difficulty with being quiet when another dog is around.........he just doesn't like other dogs. I am seriously thinking of taking him to some classes to socialize him more. Kallie is a social butterfly. Maybe if you could pick LB up and let her be petted by your neighbor so that she has a strong awareness of her scent, the next time you encounter her, she may not be so barky. Just a suggestion.
But it is better to work one on one with a dog when there is an issue, so you may have to wait until Carlos comes back or take the suggestion by Andrea and give it a go.

I'm going to try that no bark gadget and see how it goes. Then when Carlos comes back, I'll do that one on one thing.
I know that they are being protective of their mom, but it can get out of hand. I'm probably known as that dog lady that can't control her dogs.:(

i need some advice also because my yorkie chubby he'll bark at certain people when he's indoor like the mail man and weird people on a bike or if he see other dogs getting walked by their owners and not him but once he's outside he stop no barking at all and bebe the baby maltese she hasn't started to bark so i don't want chubby to teach her how to bark at every thing that passes by do you think she will learn that from chubby? but does this happen to you... at home they are like 2 crazy monkeys and when ever they go out they are complete adorable angels?

I know exactly how you feel! My Bella is such a dollbaby at home and she's very sweet to everyone in my family and my friends, but when she's out she's really shy, and only likes it when people pet her sometimes. It's very touch and go. She's never growled at or bitten anyone or anything like that, she'll just duck out of the way of their hand or hide behind my leg. But if you spend more then 5 minutes with her, she'll let you pet her and will be attached to you at the hip, haha! I get my Dolce in a few days and his Breeder Karen told me he's super social, so I hope a little of it will rub off on Bella bunny:p

I understand Laurie, i'm going to order a no bark collar! I read about it in a magazine & it gives out some sort of tone when the dog barks!
The problem i have is with Jools & other dogs, it's making me not want to take him a walk:( when i walk Jude it is such a relaxed walk & i laugh at his antics but with Jools i get worked up before i've left the front door:(
Let me know how you get on with that no bark thingy

Elaine, I know what you mean. I dread taking them out for a walk because it's such and ordeal for me, and I don't want it to. They are not too bad one on one, but with the both of them together, it's not good.

The bark collar works WONDERS!!! My bf's mom lent us hers and Mia had to bark once to learn not to bark!! Now, when I say no bark in the house she doesnt bark! If she barks again though, she likes to test the waters, I put it on and she will sit there and stare at me like I am the worst person in the world! I leave it on for like 5 minutes and take it off, and she is good to go!
