Hey guys,
Ok so can you guys re-post all of your tear stain remedies. As most of you probably know, Cosmo's tear stains are out of control. Hopefully they will slow down now that all of his baby teeth have been pulled but we will see. So post away everyone:)

:D I still feel Tylan is the best thing to use, just my opinion.
I am sure once the teething stops it will get better, if not do the Tylan..
Good Luck,

I'm with Andrea, give it a little bit more time for the tearstains to clear since he doesnt have the baby teething problem......then do the Tylan. I use the angel eyes but only because I bought it first and it is way more money than the Tylan (both have the same antibiotic in them). But I also have the Tylan. It has really helped with Kallie's eyes and once I can get my act together I will post some before and after pics. But I did use some of the home remedies before I got clued into the tylan/angel eyes solution. I'll have to dig through my records for the home remedies for stains.:fainted:

On another forum ( most people know which one) someone suggest Polydent whitening tablets and I must say it worked. After Sammy had her 1st Patella operation she suffered really bad staining ( never before the op) and I tried the polydent and it worked. I had to do it a few times over the period of the month and it all went away.
Mine now get very minimal amounts and I just clean there faces daily and it is under control.
1 polydent whitening tablet to 50mls warm water, apply to area being careful NOT to get it in the eye, let it dry in and wash out the next morning ( apply in the evening, and DON'T rub it into there skin).

I'm going to try this again as the first time i dont think it had much affect.
When you mixed it did it become frothy? & did you apply the froth or the liquid?
I think i will get someone to send me over Tylan from the states as it's only available here on prescription & i dont know if my vet will give me one for a little tear staining. He'll say i'm nuts:tongue6: now you dont all need to agree to that one:p

I can't get tylan here in Aussie at all ( well at least I couldn't find any). I applied the liquid, and it didn't work first time, I had to do it a few times. Polydent won't fix the problem, it only helps clean the face. I need something to FIX the problem from the inside, like Tylan. I have heard so much about it, but I can't get it here either. All the good stuff is in the US,

I just ordered angel's eyes last week, waitin for it to come. I didn't know tylan and angel eyes were the same thing. I thought I read somewhere before that we shouldn't be giving puppies under 8 mo or 1 yr tylan..? so does this mean angel eyes is not okay even if the instructions says it's okay for puppies over 6 weeks of age?

I'm not sure:confused: but i think it's cause they are still teething when puppies & it may not help if teeth are still coming in. Also, it is an antibiotic & so should be used sparingly.
Hopefully someone else will be able to advise better.

Okay I know I'm engaged to a vet - but am I the only one who has a problem with feeding my dog an non prescription antibiotic long term ? Tylan and Angel glow are an illegal product in Australia - all the vets I've spoken too are not impressed at all with the U.S practices . Feeding any antibiotic long term is detrimental to a dogs health - even small amounts can build up in their systems - and mean that no antibiotic will work effectively . These products often mask real underlying health issues - such as allergies , blocked tear ducts or entropion problems . Feeding this to a puppy and before the adult teeth come in , will ruin the teeth . Sarah

Yes, i would wait till she is an adult & just try to keep her face really clean with daily washing to stop yeast growing in the hair & this will help quite a bit.

Because people should not self prescribe . All those over the counter products contain derivatives of tetracycline - an antibotic . Sarah

Try mixing up some MOM paste ( milk of magnesium , hydrogen peroxide and corn flour ) mix into a thick paste and apply under the eyes . Wait until it dries completely , then wash out - remember to condition the hair , it can be drying . Sarah

So you could get it as a prescription from a vet in australia?
It is only available as a prescription over here & i would'nt ask my vet for it as it's only cosmetic & to be honest they have very little staining.

the groomers from petsmart told me to use distilled water, boil it, let it cool down and use it to wipe the face. she said this works pretty good. I'm going to try it for the time being, so far I just use the tear stain solution from the pet store and warm water everyday.. doesn't seem to help much. Lulu has really really bad tear stains, I'm going to start switching her food this week.

Hi,
Nemo never had tearstains, He was also on Nutro. Nutro is a good food, but for some reason made Nemo tear like crazy. He is now on Wellness(For like 3 or 4 months). As soon as I stopped the Nutro the stains went away..

Yes, I actually learned about it from a fellow MT member. I used 1 teaspoon of the "unfiltered" vinegar from the health food store to a quart of distilled water.........BUT I also have used the tylan antibiotic for the tear stains........so hard to know which is actually doing the trick of getting rid of the tear stains. With antibiotics, it is important to remember if you are going to use them, not to keep them on it for a long time and to only use it after they have lost their baby teeth. My vet prescribed the tetracyline for the tear staining. I have also tried the MOM treatment and you ABSOLUTELY need to condition to keep the hair from frizzing and breaking. Condition - condition - condition. But it removed staining.

What about the Visine mentioned on the Maltese only site? Has anyone tried this every day? I just got a puppy. He is 12 weeks old and has some tear staining. My vet recommended we wait to consider eye ointments with antibiotics in them since his staining is not too bad and he was afraid this might encourage yeast/fungus...he did say to get some mild over the counter eye drops for him at the pharmacy and do that twice a day for a while.
Has anyone tried this? Also, my puppy is on Eukanuba... Any thoughts?

Hey LadyJazz!
I've got your remedy! I had the same problem with my Maltepoo, Sadie, as did my mother with her Maltese, Coot. We've battled over 2 years with them, especially Coot. I hoped the same thing when Sadie was teething, but it got worse. We both started them on Angels' Glow in January and it's amazing! We both had 100% results in as little as 10 days for Sadie, 14 days for Coot. I was so elated that I'd found something that actually worked that I started offering it on my site, SlideCollars.com. I offer free shipping that the Angels' Glow site doesn't. And it's fully guaranteed or your money back. Call me if you like....I've tried everything! My number is on the site. This stuff has really excited me, and it's all natural. My mother tried the Tylan and it didn't work and Coot was sick all the time. It's a prescription antibiotic you put in their water. Antibiotics on a permanent basis can weaken a human's or animal's immune system and kills good bacteria in the process...NOT GOOD. I'm an Pediatric RN and I know my medications! I'm not a salesperson, just someone who found something that works and would like to share that success with others. I'm so happy with Sadie's pretty little face now. Do call if you have any questions. I welcome new pet buddies!

Yes, I purchased the angel's glow and it does have an antibiotic in it; actually the same antibiotic that is in the Tylan........I checked the bottles and could not believe my eyes. But it does work!!!! The key is to give them Activia(yogurt w/ live bacteria cultures) so that you have good bacteria being replaced when you use either angel eyes or Tylan. Got that idea from my Doctor!!! I give them the vanilla and they love it! But I have used both the angel's glow and the Tylan and just wrap a small amount in a small piece of cheese......they don't even know they are eating it. LOL

I use that and it does work. It changes the PH balance of the tears and prevents the bacteria from staining the face. I also make a concerted effort to keep Scrappy's face dry. I am constantly throughout the day dabbing his face with a makeup pad to dry his tears.
Scrappy has blocked tear ducts. Some of these remedies will not work unless the underlying problem has been diagnosed.
Elaine you are right tetracycline is used for farm animals and poultry and for aquariums here in Au.
So while it needs to be prescribed you can buy it over the counter as an antibiotic for aquariums.

As far as the Tylan (contains tylosin which is an antibiotic).....I ordered it off the internet. And it says pretty much what you said that it was for farm animals, poultry and aquariums. Cheryl,
No, I give the angel eyes in a piece of cheese. I cut a little square top and bottom piece of white american cheese and put a smidge of the angel eyes on top of one piece and then put the other cut piece on top and crimp the edges together. They have it down before they know what it was. My kids love cheese. I usually give them one tablespoon of vanilla yogurt a day when they are on either the angel eyes or Tylan as a reward.

Hi,
No vet is going to give a 12 week puppy an antibiotic .
You can use fresh eyes, it's safe and it helps keep their eyes clean. I use it for Nemo. When your puppy is done teething (Cause teething causes staining) then you can use a product for the staining. Usually when the teething stops so does the staining..
Here is the link to Fresh Eyes..

Even if the vet is willing to give you the antibiotic (hopefully he wouldn't), your little one should not be on it at this early age. Maybe for medical reasons but certainly not a steady dose which is needed to clear up staining. So wait until he has his permanent teeth before giving any consideration to antibiotics for tear staining!

It is a good idea to consult your vet about the staining though. Just in case there is an underlying problem besides teething. Such as ear mites or blocked tear ducts.
If the ducts are blocked, they can fix this at the same time as his desexing.

Thank you... Maybe I came across wrong in my email. I am not at all hoping for an antibiotic..and am glad it should not be an issue, but it seems like several are using products with antibiotics in them.
I'm hoping to find out something along the lines of the "teething" reply and that I just need to keep him clean.. To me, the staining is not such a big deal as long as he is not sick or needing surgery. He is such a sweetie! This dog has the PERFECT temperament! I'm amazed at how much he loves people and my other pets.

Ok, all you pros... what would you suggest from get go for a puppy for this "situation?" A special food, spring water, etc....????
Thanks!
I would say until they get their permanent teeth, forget antibiotics. But in the meantime, distilled water w/ filtered apple cider to change the ph level of the eye tears and no red dye in treats or food. No tomato pumace or cranberry ingredients. Some maltese are not bothered by either, but my Kallie is sensitive to those ingredients and her face has cleared up considerably with a combination of the above things. Once they have lost their puppy teeth, an antibiotic, Tylan can be given to clear up future staining.

With a puppy you can't do much until it's done with the teething.I still believe it all comes down to genetics. Of course I don't know who Nemos parents are , but he has never stained. The only time he has stained is when I gave him food with Beet Pulp in it, as soon as I stopped his stains went away!
I now feed natural Balance also, it's great and Nemo is doing well on it..

Hi,
No vet is going to give a 12 week puppy an antibiotic .
You can use fresh eyes, it's safe and it helps keep their eyes clean. I use it for Nemo. When your puppy is done teething (Cause teething causes staining) then you can use a product for the staining. Usually when the teething stops so does the staining..
Here is the link to Fresh Eyes..
Good Luck,

Yes you can buy it anywhere like CVS or Walegreens, wherever. It's safe ..
You use it as you would on yourself, just a drop or two in each eye, it keeps the eyes clean and free of the icky stuff...

I am not an actual hands on mom yet. My baby Lola will be coming home end of July. However, I've been doing alot of research on Maltese's, particularly on this topic. I read that the ff helps in reducing tear staining.
1, use distilled water and drink from a water bottle as opposed bowl
2, Stainless steel feeding bowls
3, Avoid foods with coloring
4, wash face regularly
I hope this helps, probably too simplistic:)

Petco has Natural Balance. Mia & Cody are still teething but both her & Cody have gotten alot better with the Angel Eyes and home cooking. I gave them 1/4 tsp. 1x a day for 2 weeks and Mia's are almost non-exsist and Cody's are much better. I would wait for the full strength Tylan until they finish teething...it all depends on the dog as to when they are finish teething.
I posted this on another forum but i also wanted to share with you guys that i am happy~!!~
today donbi had like 5 shots (including benadryl)
anyways my vet knows how i am particular about my babies.
and im always asking her questions like tearstains etc.
well donbi has a lot of moisture inbetween her eyes and i for one know the moisture is making her yeast buildup and tearstainning like crazy!
well finally today i told my vet, the angel eyes (she knows about) and tylan are not doing its job. i explain she has a littl yeast buildup in between her legs. and she is completely done teething.
so my question to her is, whats the next thing to do.
she gave me pyoben gel (its like lotion) it dries up the moisture areas.
and conofital for the yeast buildup.
so far the kids are all dry and i dont see as much tearing inbetween donbi and daerongs eyes :D
just wanted to share with you all my excitment for the day
please consult with your vets before getting the medication :D

I use the unfiltered apple cider vinegar that you buy at the health food store. It costs about $5.00 for a quart but using only l tsp. of the vinegar to a quart of water.........it lasts a long time!! I drank some and it's not that bad. The kids drink it now with no problem.

I don't that it has to be unfiltered but that was the suggestion that was given to me............I guess you could even use white vinegar as well. It just changes the PH level of their tear stains so that it does not have the red stains.

I have found the greatest solution to the tear stain problem. It is an all natural herbal powder called Purifeye. I was simply amazed at how it made those ugly tear stains disappear completely within a few weeks !!!!
I have tried all those topical products on he market and even got messy with the MOM (milk of magnesia, peroxide etc...) suggestions..... and still had no success until I found the www.PETPURITY.com website. I would suggest to all of you to give it a try - and would never suggest to give your pet an antibiotic for tear stains !!!!

It takes them a little bit to get use to but then they are not bothered by the taste at all. I tasted it as well, and it isn't too bad........maybe I should drink it too. For Molly it seems that her severe tear stains were due to allergies. The vet mentioned that they were worse than normal, so put her on an antihistamine. That still didn't help, so they gave her a stronger antihistamine called Delta Albaplex. It has helped greatly!

I have since purchased more AE this week I was able to get it off ebay for under $20

Its not that she's sick, the stains dont bother her - so why have her on a medication?! I am very pleased with Purifeye, I feel better that I am adding vitamins into her food everyday instaed of an antibiotic!

Tylan will not hurt your dog if given 10 days to 14 days, for some people nothing else works so this is their best hope. Vitamins will not make stains go away, if all else fails then I feel it's genetics and you really can't do much about that. With or without stains it doesn't change how much we love them:D Sometimes it's not cosmetic it can be allergies they could need their eyes flushed it could be something new in their environment or it can just be genetic!

hi all
at the risk of being a pedant-
tylosin/tylan based products are not actually legal anywhere in the world.
neither makers of angels eyes or glow have ever applied for marketing authorities (read: government rubber stamps)
It just happens that some governments turn a blind eye as they don't see it as a major problem. They have bigger fish to fry.
I used to use Angels eyes and was happy with it until defra banned it and angels glow in the uk.
I now use a natural product called angels delight. Instead of killing the bacteria it oxidises the iron inside the body. This means that the enzyme that is the basis of the red yeast is not created and hence no tear stains on my dog.
With regard to purifeyye I know one person that uses it and is happy with it. From what i can see both angels delight and puifeye are very similar. the angels delight has more ingredients because it was initailly developed to help with other problems such as arthritus, cateracts and slpping patellas. Not sure if it does all the other stuff as they are not a problem for me.
I do feel sorry for the australians though as none of the above, not even the natural products would be allowed through customs. I have always wondered if the restrictions are as much about protecting the economy from imports as protecting the environment

The shipping costs across the pond have always been prohibitive. Many things that I have looked at in the past have been cheaper than the shipping costs.
Here in the UK the prices for angels delight are exactly what i used to pay for angels eyes in the past. As with Angels eyes, you get to the stage where you don't have to use it every day.
Ultimately straight tylosin will always be the cheapest option, bar successful diet change.

Has anyone used that product and if so did it work? Also I try and feed my babies good food. I feed them merrick before grain. I don't want to give her Angel Eyes because of the antibiotics in it. Hey guys,
Ok so can you guys re-post all of your tear stain remedies. As most of you probably know, Cosmo's tear stains are out of control. Hopefully they will slow down now that all of his baby teeth have been pulled but we will see. So post away everyone:)
Here is the update on the Maltese Secret Stay White Tear Stain Remover. I've used it a week and you can see that it is getting lighter but the biggest thing is you have to use it twice a day and I missed a couple of times getting home from work so late and by the time I finished my nightly love chores for all of my fur babies and my hunny. I had forgot to do their eyes. I am still foing it and I will let you know if it takes it away completely or not.
