View Full Version : Odd question...

Alright so I have a question on being out in the sun. I know malts can get sunburned easily. There is a meetup we are having this month and I was planning on taking Candie with me. It will be at a park so it will have some shade but not a whole lot. I don't plan on her being out in the sun for very long but is there anything I can do to make sure she doesn't get sunburned? I was going to get some suncreen spray for dogs to put on her, but it won't get here in time.:(
So would it help putting a t-shirt on her? Or would that just make her too hot even if it was a thinner light weight material?
Anyone have any suggestions? I really don't want her to get sunburned and I know on her back is where she would burn easily because you can see the skin easily.
I kinda liked the idea of putting a shirt on her because she looks cute with clothes on but I don't want to over heat her although she will be in the shade as much as possible and kept as cool as possible. If it is too hot of a day it will be canceled anyways so it wouldn't be really hot out.
Any ideas?

I would think a light fabric T-shirt would do the trick for her back but I'd also wear a hat to protect her nose or put a little sunscreen on it. Neutrogena has a really nice product I wear on my face where I had a mole removed with a sunblock of 55 and is a clear white creme but disappears and leaves no mess or residue. I bought it at Walgreens.
HAVE FUN and don't forget the sunscreen for yourself.:D

I think a shirt would help, but watch her, make sure she isnt spending to much time in the sun..
Good Luck.

Can you not use a baby sunblock on her parting, nose & head? If the doggie one wont be here on time then i would use something like that to protect here.
Have a great time & take plenty of pics for the group:D

If you use human sun screen on the pup(esp the nose area, can't they lick it off?) Don't the pet store sell anything? I've never looked for this item before.

I have never seen sunblock at regular pet stores but I have seen them online.
Candie loves any type of lotion, she will lick it all off. I can definately put some on her head but I know she will lick it off her nose if she can, lol.
Would a mesh fabric work or not give enough protection? I was talking to a lady who said she could make Candie a shirt out of mesh fabric. She would make it really cute and girly and would even put a hood on it so her head could be protected too.
I still don't plan on her being out in the sun much, I just want to take as many precautions as I can. And if she gets to wear a really cute outfit too well all the better right, lol.:p

Ice on Ice from CC has sunscreen in it. I use that on LB. I think it works great.

I thought dogs of white color only got sun burn if they are shaved or their fur is very very thin or short:wavecry:

Krystal, I think their skin would turn red, just like ours would if we stayed out too much. I have never seen any signs of a sunburn on LB, but then I use Ice on Ice all the time.
I got this off the CC website:
Ice on Ice (http://www.chrissystems.com/iceonice1.htm)
I hope this helps.:)

they could get burnt on the exposed areas such as the parting on the hair!
I dont know if the mesh would work as the sun would easily get through that but it is better than not using anything. I'm sure all will be well & you know yourself not to let her run about for hours on end in the sun:wink5:

Candie's hair comes down into a natural part and the pink skin is exposed where the part is.
She won't be kept out in the sun long, I myself can't even handle being out in the sun for very long if it is hot, lol. I will put some suncreen on her and the jersey will just offer a little extra protection. Like you said better than not having anything at all. And she will look cute at the same time, lol. Gives me an excuse to buy her another outfit.:lol2:

You can take her anyway and just watch her to see if she burns. It'll be red if she has a burn starting. A mesh shirt really won't do anything and if the tshirt is thick enough it'll just make her hot. Enzo doesn't really burn but his skin does darken. He never scratches or licks it so I figure he's fine.

I've never ordered that sunscreen before since I use Ice On Ice. I also have it in a little bottle so I can respray LB if we stay out a little to long in the park. It's always worked for me and LB has never gotten sunburnt.
