I was thinking of doing LB's grooming myself. I was wondering for those that groom your own babies, what type of clipper and scissors do you use? There are so many brands and type out there it gets confusing. What do you recommend?

Thanks Andrea!:justahug: I get LB groomed every 4-5 weeks, but I've always wanted to end up grooming her myself.

There are so many types of shears out there. And the list of different types of clippers. A little bit overwhelming.

I should find a pic of a scissor cut versus a clipper cut. I don't know the difference LOL:lol2: :lol2:

If you saw pics between my scissor cuts and clipper cut there's a big difference cause I'm such a newbie at it (bad)!:lol2: :lol2: The clipper is the way to go...I purchased a laube trimmer on ebay and so far i really like it. Leo's first cut I went against the hair up the middle of his back (just a little spot) and ended up too short so than I took the scissors to try and even things out (not a good idea) looked kinda choppy. So a couple of weeks later I think I should try again to clean things up...Leo ends up with an almost bald spot atop his little head (I call it the flat top), again I go against the grain with the clipper. Ugh! While this may appear to be a horror story, I guess the lesson I learned was to NEVER go against the grain unless you have a comb that's the desired length (mine is 1/2 inch comb) and that I'm really bad with the scissors but I'll keep on trying.:wink5: And the best thing of all is that Leo is still soooo cute, I swear!!! Left my camera at work or I'd post a picture!

You have to start somewhere, right?:D

Cathy:)
PS With laube trimmer I couldn't find any long combs if you're looking for length so I'd look at the Oster clippers for sure. I personally, will stick to the pros for a scissor cut!

Sorry, I missed this but better late than never!

Well, I only used scissors on Kallie to cut her long hair..........trimmers scare me a bit. But if you are keeping LB short then perhaps the clippers are the way to go. Ask the groomer who has been doing her what she uses (blade number and model) and give it a go. If it doesn't work out, then you can sell the trimmer here on MT.:D :D

You don't need an expensive set of scissors, that I do know! A pair of curved scissors works the best for me, petedge has a good variety. I use clippers on the body and scissor the face and legs, but I leave them longer. I have a pair of Andis clippers and I usually use 40 blade with a comb (the small ones) or you can get a 5f blade and use that instead of the combs, altho that takes it a little shorter. Here is what my cuts usually wind up looking like

It's worth it to put in a little money up front for good clippers but you figure they will pay for themselves in a couple of months! At least that is what I keep telling my hubby :lol2:

Wow , you do a wonderful job.

Ok, so I can order an Andis clippers and ask for the 5f blade also, or does it come with it? Can you recommend any particular Andis clipper? Oh, one more thing, will the 5f blade work on a cottony coat? Thank you!:p

I don't use clippers but do have a pair of scissors that I absolutely love. I got them from Sally's Beauty Supply. I set a limit of $50 and went in and told the lady that is what I had to spend that I wanted a good pair at or below the $50 and I would not trade mine for anything. A little secret that I was told though is to put a dab of clipper oil on the screw after using them and open and close them several times. It keeps the blades sharp.

well I get mine groomed as well. But I also would be interested in grooming them myself, it would be a lot less expensive. So like Laurie I will be checking in also for some advice.

Believe me when I say that I am FAR from an expert here! Very, very VERY FAR, LOL! So please do not take this as the only or best way to do it, it's just the way I do it and what I use.

These are the clippers I have, this one comes with the 40 blade to use under the combs. There is another ad for these same clippers except they come with a 10 blade, it just depends on what you want to use! I use a 10 blade for the paw pads, but I usually scissor those now because it seems to make them itchy to shave them.

Here is the 5fc blade I have used - it will make the coat a lot shorter though!! 1/4 inch length

These arent' the combs I have but these will work

I have never shaved a cotton coat so I'm not sure what will work best - the combs can get tangled though, so getting a 5fc or similar blade might work the best.

You will have the best results clipping a clean coat, even though it is more work! I usually bathe and blow dry the dog who is about to recieve the unfortunate haircut and then shave and scissor them. You will get the best results rounding the feet up if you cut them when they are freshly bathed. I am good at doing hack jobs on the feet though, i am just now barely able to make the feet look somewhat presentable. I'm sure others will have better advice for you!

This is what a 5fc hack clipper job looks like at my house

I'm too embarrassed to post my first chop job. OMG, Lucy looked ridiculous! Now I know NOT to cut the legs the same length as the body, especially if your dog has chicken legs like LUCY!! The poor thing. She was so embarrassed.
