Got my 3yr old maltese (junior) from my brother. Had him for 2 months now & everytime my family & I leave, junior would bark & moan constantly  to the point that the neighbor wrote 2 letters saying that he barks all day long when we're not home.

My brother keeps junior in the house since he has an apartment. My house has a big back yard so junior stays outside. Any suggestions on minimizing the barking?

Well first of all you have my sympathys. But to be honest toy dogs arent for keepin outside, they just arent breed for this. Maybe if you start to keep him in the house, and leave for 10 minutes at a time to reassure him you,ll be back. Gradullay make this time longer and he will get over his stress of being left on his own. Have you ever had any experience of the toy breed??. Not questioning you, just wanna help.

I have no experiences w/toy breeds :( So these toy breeds are suppose to stay indoors, even when you're gone? Junior stays indoors when we're home, but when I'm off to work, he goes outside on the patio.

I'm not confortable for him to run freely in the house. Lord knows he might poop/mark his territory. Should I keep him in the kitchen & close it off with those portable gates?

Maybe David you should get him a crate. I no its very hard with the peeing and pooping everywere, believe me i no. I have 3 yorkies. But they are such a scream I will put up with it just a little bit. I cant wait till the rest of the guys get on, they will give you a lot of great advice on keeping our wee babies. And hey hope you put a pic up of wee junior soon. I cant wait to see him. I no you are doing your best.

Hi David,

Welcome!!!! You should get him either a crate or an x-pen and leave him inside the house. My trainer told me to get them interested in something besides you...you should keep them entertained. She told me to get him a Kong and either put treats in it our put some can food inside a freeze it....they would probably be more interested in trying to get to it then noticing that you are gone. I also leave the tv on on low so they won't be lonely. I would do as Harriett says and leave a few hours at a time until he gets use to it. Also don't say bye just put him in either the crate or x-pen and leave....don't make a commotion. Good luck hopefully it will work out. Oh I would send the neighbors some cookies or something.:D

Hello David, welcome!

I live in a condo community so I sympathize with you.

I think you should keep Junior indoors, he's just probably used to being inside. If you are concerned about marking you should keep him in an expen or gated up in the kitchen with some pads, water and toys to keep him company. I leave the radio on for my girls.

Maybe you can try walking him briskly in the morning so when you leave him, he'll be tired and sleep.

Good luck to you and let us know how it goes.

I have switched over my puppy from a crate to an X Pen and she is doing great.
We started off slow and have worked her up to 7 hours while we are at work.
I leave a radio on for her and she seems to handle it well, as long as we put it on the oldies station !

Good for you I am glad that you have resolved the problem. Everything I read says to leave a white light on for them for when it gets dark. So I leave the TV on. I also leave something out for them to curl up on that smells of me. An old Tshirt works.

We need pictures of Junior :)

Thank you all for your inputs. You're great! :)

I will put Junior in the kitchen w/ a gate, along with treats/water/radio/toys/etc. Sorry, what's a "Kong"?

I'll post some pics of Junior soon...

Welcome to the forum.
As everyone else has said....Maltese are not an outside dog at all. They are a companion dog, where you are....they are. I would be very afraid of someone trying to steal him off the patio.
Our Jack is almost 15 months old and he stays in the kitchen when we are gone. He has his bed, toys and water.
A kong is a rubber cone shaped toy. It is very durable and you can find it at any pet store. There are different sizes, I use the small. The have canned squirt stuffin' that I put inside the Kong. They also have the Kong cookies that come in a box that fit the top hole. I put some tiny cookie pieces in first and then the stuffin' and lastly the Kong cookie. He loves it.
Some obedience classes might also help.
Lots of play time, one on one and lots of walks help tire them out.
Good luck and remember that a Maltese absolutely loves their human and wants to be them all the time.
I wouldn't want it any other way.

I agree they are inside dogs. Nemo will go on my deck and 5 minutes later look up and see me and say open the friggin door now and let me in, genius:D
They don't like to be alone , but you have to work so they will get used to it. I wouldn't leave you Maltese ouside also , cause someone might take him this has happened more often than not. A crate or a xpen is perfect , he will do well, I'm glad you are going to do this..
Good Luck,

I agree never leave a maltese outside without supervision the gate, treats, radio etc sounds like a great start keep us posted.

I feel much the same, supervision is needed anytime a small dog is left outside and should never be left alone. Maltese were known for being a "ladies' dog" that they would carry wherever they went. Great companion dogs that love to be with their master.

Sorry, I've been busy at work & just now reading all the great advice/responses. Junior is actually getting used to us/me leaving in the morning for work. I think now he realizes that I will come back. He hasn't been barking or moaning during the day :D

Thanks again!

Oh yes, here is a picture of the infamous dog moaner/barker :)

At night, he sleeps in the kitchen in a crate w/ a padded cushion, toys, some raw hide, & his toy pig. He wakes me up at 7am for his morning relief.

During the morning/day, Junior is in the kitchen w/a gate, but I will try to introduce him to the great outdoors. Maybe installing a doggie door in the future.

Junior is precious!!!!! I am so glad he is doing better. I am a newbie and I just read all the posts on this thread and I was worried for you there for a minute.

Oh and I have an 8 lbs.maltipoo and a 5 lb. maltese and my 6'5", 250 lb. husband takes these dogs everywhere and carries them under his armpits. It is the cutest thing. He is such a macho dude so it is funny, but I dare anyone to say anything to him. LOL
