A WARRNAMBOOL couple is devastated after a vicious dog killed their beloved two-year-old Maltese-cross, Rocky, this week.
Rod Martin and Robyn Hatfield said their prized pet was locked in the backyard of their home when it poked its nose under a gate.
The couple said a vicious dog on the other side latched onto Rocky's nose, tearing off a large part of the smaller animal's face.
Rocky was rushed to a Warrnambool vet but could not be saved.
Mr Martin said the killer dog's owner was with the dog at the time, but ran off after the incident.
He said witnesses had told him the dog was not on a leash.
The couple's other dog, Rascal - Rocky's father - was also shaken by the attack.
``Rascal lost his mate and we lost our best friend,'' Mr Martin said.
``It's not the same house anymore without the little fella.
``Rascal's not the same dog anymore too. He hasn't eaten for three days.''
The couple said the vicious attack should serve as a warning to the killer dog's owner.
``(The owner) should be man enough to come (to us) and say it was his dog,'' Mr Martin said.
He said they were concerned the dog would attack someone's child or pet.
``We want for (the owner) to realise they've got a dog that's a killer.''
A Warrnambool City Council spokeswoman said the council's rangers were investigating the incident. She said the dog being sought was not a restricted breed but would not confirm what kind of dog it was.
