Does anyone know which breeders adopt out their dogs as retirees at a reasonable price????? I know Tammy does and I am on her list but does anyone else know of any other breeders that may do this also?

I know that my Lucy's mom was available for adoption, but not sure if she found a home or not. Honestly, I would just contact all the reputable breeders in your area and ask about a retiree. Breeders shouldn't charge for you to adopt their retired bitches, only the cost of spaying/teeth cleaning/etc. At least that is my understanding. If someone wants you to pay a lot for a dog that has been bred and is no longer in a breeding program, I would RUN the other way, LOL!

That is the way I understand it also Stacy. I was going to get a retiree awhile ago, but Nick flipped cause she was almost eight years old and he felt it was so mean to take her away from the only home she knew. Nick doesn't understand all this retiree breeding stuff... I did feel though eight was a bit old so I backed off the idea..

Carol, there's a wonderful maltese breeder in Florida who does adopt her show retirees...Here's the link to her website: http://www.maltesedogs.com/maltese_puppies_for_sale.html
She only charges the cost of spay/neuter, teeth cleaning, and updating shots.
Are you looking to add another furbaby to your family? I think that's wonderful :)

And think about it Carol........Rhonda will be graduated by then. :hearter: :hearter:

Thanks Marisol, I do know this particular breeder but she does not have any available right now and actually she is moving a bit closer to where I live so it may be possible down the road. Whoever has has the "right" retiree first gets me!!!:D :D

You no I never heard of before until I came to MT and YT about breeders who have finished with their breeding girls and then rehome them. Sorry but I find it hard to take in, that maybe a breeder has had what they can get from 1 of their babies, and then say well, WE cant get anymore puppies from her, so we have to retire her.:( . What a nice word for, we cant get any more pups outta her.

Yes, I admit there is a certain bit of callousness involved when this happens, but I can't say as I disapprove of this practice. Where is a dog better of living the majority of their lives-- as one of many dogs at a breeder's home or placed in a pet home where they are loved and spoiled for the rest of their lives? I know it's not for everyone but for those who don't mind giving a home to an adult dog, it's a great way to get a well-bred maltese for only the cost of spaying and sometimes teeth cleaning.

Oh dont get me wrong Stacy . I no what you mean. Like I just have strong feelings. (about the only thing im feeling strong about) Is how can you rare a beauty and then after mybe justa few years, its like out them on the adoption role. I no that this is what breeders do. Im not slaming this for it. Its just so hard for me to understand

There is no doubt that it is somewhat callous, raise a dog, breed a dog then give it away, but ultimately, breeders are thinking of their dogs quality of life.

It is definitely a different mind set and there really is no right or wrong answer here.
Really. There isn't, LOL.

You have every right to voice your opinion! You weren't harsh, as far as I was concerned. It is one of those topics that can be argued and argued about and no one person will ever be entirely 'right'. And that's ok, LOL!

And there is nothing wrong with opinions. Everyone has them. I dread the day that I have to re home one of mine. That is something that I do not like about what I do. I get so very attached to mine and it is going to be a very difficult thing to do. Yes, actually I did get the chance to talk with Denise at length and she had a little girl that would be available within three weeks of when I was first looking. But we also had the opportunity to "rescue" a little girl around the same time and so when we saw the rescue, well, all I can say is that Brandy stole our hearts. We knew that Denise would be able to place "Glory" as she was tiny and cute as a button. If the rescue had not worked out for us, we would have little Glory living with us today. I hope it works out for you. Let me know when you are in the area as Denise only lives about 10 minutes from me. It'd be great to meet you and oh please bring Mr. Wookie.

Carol,

Have you seen Glory? SHE IS the one that caught my eye! TOO FUNNY! I wrote to Denise last week asking if she would ever rehome Glory and told her that if so, I would love to meet her. I was so thankful when I heard back from her, that she is going to rehome her and that she was thrilled to know I have several friends that have puppies from her.

SMALL world!

I am meeting her in Orlando, at the Dog Show, Dec 15. Do you have plans to attend? I LOVE meeting other Maltese Mom's and Dad's.

I have only seen the pic of her on her site. She is a lovely but of course they have trimmed her now that she is not in show. She was the one that we were looking to adopt as well, but she had just had a litter and was not able to be placed yet when we were looking..............and of course, the little rescue came along and won my hubby's heart immediately. No hesitation on his part after that first lick. lol

I had not planned on attending the show but that does not mean I can't talk the hubby into taking a ride over. We both love dog shows and we always attend the one that is held in Brooksville about 35 minutes away in Jan or Feb........I forget but I always go with a freind and we meet there so she always keeps me informed. I will let you know about the Dec. 15 dog show! That would be so great to meet you. I hope it works out for you to get Glory; she is a real looker but we never got the chance to meet her in person so really have no idea about her personality.

Carol I hope you can make the Orlando Show, that will be wonderful!

Denise e-mailed me and told me a lot about Glory, she also included some "recent" photos of her, one of which really made my heart pound. I have been so impressed with her e-mails to me. I can hardly wait for mid-December to arrive. :D

Stacy, thank you. Also in my last e-mail to Denise I told her I know you as well and that I believe it was you that started the thread that lead me to her web site again and made me ask about Glory. I had know of her due to Karen's Chomper and Elliott and Chandra's Mickey and Whitney's Ella. They all had told me glowing things about Denise. And of course you know about Jaimie's Pixel and Paxton from Susie, well Glory is from Susie as well. It seems more and more to me the "Maltese World" is a very small one.

I still find it funny, that of all the dogs on her site, it was Glory that caught my eye and it is Glory she wants to rehome. There is NO mention of rehoming her at all on the site.

Is THAT Karma or what?!

AND the very odd thing, I was looking at Joyce's site and she also has a Glory. I wrote to Joyce to find out more about her Glory and guess WHAT. She will be rehomed soon also. YES, very small world indeed.

Dear Carol,

I believe it's being held at the Central Florida Fairgrounds. Hang on let me find it. I sure hope you can make it. I think Denise would be excited too.

OK here is what I found:

"The Central Florida Kennel Club will be hosting the AKC dog shows Dec. 15, 16 and 17. Plus there is a breeders showcase Thursday Dec. 14 where breeders only (no professional handlers) show their own breeding. The show is at the Central Florida Fairgrounds on west Colonial Drive in Orlando."

I will be there on Saturday the 15th. Late morning. My drive up takes about 4 hours. I will leave here as early as I can. IF I get to sleep at all the night before, HAHAHAHA. :p Find Denise, you will find me. Or just look for the person "glowing" with joy.

OH MY GOSH, ALL FLUFFIN RIGHT! hehehehe He's coming! Goodness you are one hard sell! :lol2: :tounge: BUT just recall you signed up for Babysitting duty! :wink5: Keep in mind that Mr Wookie has developed a high "security" growl for me. He LOVES people but other dogs, takes him some time to warm up to them. Little stinker, he is fine with dogs he already knows, it's new dogs he has "bark at issues" with some times.

OH yes, thank me now... you may not be so happy when you have had Wookie growling and barking so much. I will bring Wookie's stroller also so you can just let him bark his little voice out.

I wish like heck I understood his huge change in personality. It was almost overnight. I might think that Blackjack had something to do with it but I am not sure.

Off to bed with me as well... to dream of everyone laughing about his haircut. :maltese1:

I am more excited Carol, and really worried about Wookie's new "issue" with new doggies. We will see how he acts up. Wookie is JUST a dog... really. SHHH he is a very loved doggie and he means the world to me but he's still ONLY a dog. :lol2: I wish! HAHAHA he's got me wrapped around his tiny toe.

Well as a matter of fact, yes I have. Denise was so kind to send me four, that were taken right after her coat was cut down. She still looks darling to me. Denise is being so kind as to put every photo she has of Glory on a disk and bring it to me. I had told her I am a "scrapbook" type and would love to have any puppy photos she has.

Wookie will fall in love with her, once she is here, at our home. Wookie's "issue" seems to be with new dogs, out of our home. I have a friend that brought over her 5 month old Yorkie a bit ago and Wookie was fine with her.

Can hardly wait to see you and your pack. OH my gosh, we get to meet all of you, what could be better? I am charging my batteries and cleaning off the memory in my camera. :wink5:

I'm bringing three cameras, two digital with new batteries and my SLR to get some great shots. It is really going to be great to meet up with you and Denise and all our furbutts. The girls do not have any issues with new dogs but Mr. Toby, well, he has issues with any dog that is not part of the household and that steps foot in our yard. He is not "people" friendly either but does not bite, just is very cautious and shy towards them.

I can't wait, just 12 more days...............that's less that two weeks! YAY:D Hope we have cool but not cold weather!! The weather up here has really been great the last week or so.

Kallie just wants to meet Mr. Wookies because he is such a celeb but nothing more. Perhaps Brandy will catch his eye! Brandy will catch his eye for sure... had I ever told you that Brandy, Your A Fine Girl, by Looking Glass is my all time favorite song. :D

Mr Wookie went out tonight to a "BIG DEAL" Grand Opening of a new Doggie "Hotel", called Chateau Poochie. www.chateaupoochie.com

Miss Teen Florida, our City's Mayor, and several other local celebs were there. We saw so many beautifully dressed doggies. Wookie had his photo taken at least 100 times, it was fun but wearing. It was nice, but too many flashes I think. Wookie has been sleeping almost ever since we got home. He was worn out for sure.

STUPID me, I forgot my camera, sorry.

I did take it but forgot it in my car.... and well since we had to park so far away I was lazy and didn't want to go back and get it. There were SO very many people there... I would say at least 300, and that is a low guess.

Saturday seems like it's flying at me. And I have a very busy week ahead, with Sara and hubby. Stuff, stuff, stuff to do with them.

I need to go to mapquest and find directions to the Show. I was told by Denise she is due in the Ring by 2:10 on Saturday so will get to the grooming area by about 11:00.

Wookie and I will be there with his Green Stroller, I think.

One of the West Palm shows I went to... there were 11 Maltese listed to Show. One of them was from Wookie's breeder, Bonnie Palmer. And then when I was looking around I couldn't find any... so I asked about them. Seems, no one wanted to compete against Bonnie so they withdrew. I thought that was strange. If this is a "sport" then tell me any other sport where you can pick who you compete against and when you do.

That is just so not right!  The ones who pulled their dogs should not be allowed to compete in the next two or three shows to prevent this behavior of unsportsmanklike attitude/conduct. If I had a showdog, I would have done it for the sheer experience of learning and working the dog in the ring. This is pathetic.:( :( :(

There were 11 entered but I guess the 10 others saw Bonnie's dog and gave up before Showing. I don't know... all I know is I was told that all the Maltese were withdrawn and when I asked why, I was told "no one wanted to compete against Angels Maltese." I was so upset, it would have been my first time seeing one of Bonnie's dogs in the Ring that I knew of.

You have to consider the expense also - if they are pulling their dogs just to break the major and points and to be a bad sport, that's one thing but I can say from experience that it gets VERY expensive to show a dog. Each weekend away is at least $600 and I have to weigh the competition. Being new at showing, I am at a disadvantage regardless of how nice my dog is, i don't have the grooming or handling skills the more experienced breeders do.

it also depends on who the judge is. Some judges don't really judge the dog, they judge who is holding the leash. And some judges won't put up a puppy. It just all depends.

I'm not saying it's right to pull a dog, but I know that I have to consider the expense, especially since I'm showing a puppy. Like everything, there are usually two sides to every story.

I agree, there is always two sides to every story and of course the majority of us are not too intuned to the breeding/showing aspect of things or the expense. But for all of them to withdraw is just a wee bit hard to understand???? It just doesn't 'sound' fair. But I really appreciate your explanation and clarification. :)

Dear Stacy,

Your post keeps coming back to my mind, time and time again. I feel like you do and was so HUGELY surprised when I was in contact with a very well known breeder asking about a female she was retiring. She told me sure, you may have her for $4,000.00. Do I need to say I almost fell over? I thanked her and told her, "sorry that seems like too much for me." It made me VERY sad. I would LOVE to know how many other "top" breeders do this.
