Do bleaching products for tear staing on the face actually work? I came across Super whitening Gel and was wondering if anyone's ever used it and what were the results? Also, is it harmful to the eyes and what are some at home things I can do to whiten the stains around his face. He's about a week shy of 6 months old and teething so I can't use Angelseyes yet and I don't want to cut the stained hair off, but I'm running out of options, haha! Any tips and advice would be much appreciated.:hearter:

There is a way to do it but you must be very careful. I have used the MOM treatment which is a combination of milk of magenisum/peroxide for human hair/conditioner/corn starch in equal amounts into a paste and the apply to the stains. This can be done at night and then should be washed out first thing in the morning and a conditioner used on the hair. I would not do it more than twice a week with him being so young. It is a long process as using it too often will dry the hair or damage it and it will break off or become very coarse. It is extremely important not to get any of the paste in the eyes as serious damage can occur.
Another suggestion is to add a little unfiltered apple cider vinegar to his water which will change the PH level of his eye tears. I use 1/2 teaspoon to a 1/2 gallon of water. He may not like it at first but he will drink it when he gets thirsty. I have been giving both of mine this for over a year now and they drink it with no problem.
Always clean the are daily around the eyes. IT is not a once a week clean but an every day cleaning. JMO

Thank you soooo much, I'm going to try this. I just started him on the apple cider vinegar in his water, so hopefully I'll see some results from that soon.:thumb2:

Great.........it will help but it takes time. Also please be very careful with that mixture as it is strong and can really damage the hair. Just don't rush it to get quick results.

I don't think a small amount of apple cider vinegar will hurt him regardless of age.

You can also try using some polydent (sp?).
You use 1/4 a cup of hot or warm water and put in two tabs of polydent. Let it disolve and cool. Dip a cloth in it and very carefully put it on the stain be extra careful not to get it in the eyes. You can let it set for 15 minutes and then wash it out or do it at night and wash it off in the morning. I would do it once or twice a week and then condition real well.
Corn starch may also help. Putting cornstarch under their eyes where the stains are will keep the area dry and free of bacteria. This you can do every night and is completely safe for them.

I tried the tums with Kallie, our very first maltese who had very very bad staining because of the prior owners not caring for her. AND, I have to say, they didn't work for her at all so stop giving it to her after six months. Now that I am home cooking, giving kelp daily and keeping the face clean and dry.......they have all started to improve and get those white faces back. :D :D JMHO

The stains used to really annoy me..I looked at what they drank, what they ate, in the end I tried no dry food. It worked three weeks later there were no stains.I keep them closely trimmed around the eyes , If you have not trained your dog to hold still by gently holding them under the chin and saying don't move, showing them the scissors so they did not get a fright. It might be a challenge but they will learn to do it. After 4 years my babies hold still for me. We lost our shaggy 5 years ago broke our hearts but he was an epileptic and had a motor neurone disease, the tablets were destroying his liver it was growing into his breathing area we had no choice but to put him down. So I held him and kissed him goodbye and bought him home with me. I say hello to him everyday. I vowed never again would I go through that pain! My kids thought otherwise we have 2 that are just the loveliest little dogs ever.

Hi and welcome to Maltese Talk!!!! Sorry about the loss of your Shaggy......it's never easy to say good-bye. :( :( :( But I'm glad you didn't let that stop you from getting another fluff or two! :) :)
When I lost my Kelsey, I swore off on getting another dog........well, now I have four.........how did that happen???? I don't know but glad I have them! :)
I keep mine in full coat and so don't clip around the eyes but I noticed too since they are off kibble, the staining does not seem as bad but might be some of the supplements I am giving them as well. Just hard to tell what is really clearing up the staining, just glad it is! But I'm sure the other MT members appreciate your input about how to cut the hair around the eyes. Thanks!
Again welcome to MALTESE TALK!!!!
