Anyone try clicker training with thier Malt ?

We just started last week with Lizzie Rose, and she is doing well.

The first week it was just for the Humans....but they needed a demo dog :)
Suprisingly they asked for Lizzie Rose !

So she did really good for the instructor infront of a crowd....such a smart little girl !

We have been working with her all week with getting her sits, laydowns and DOWNs without verbal comunication.

Cant get over how smart they are....amazing !

Tonight is our first night with all of the other Doggies....should be interesting !

Will let you know how she does with the Big Dogs !

My Internet is down right now at home so its hard to get on but I will update when I can.

:D Congrats, I'm so glad it's working, it does help that this breed is just REALLY smart, they so want to please. Alot of things Nemo knows I never taught him:confused: I just kept saying it and he does it like: drop it, down and stay. Im thankful for it, what ever works is great. I have heard positive things about clicker training, so I'm glad it's working for you..

Hey, that's great!!!! I do not use the clicker method but use the "sound" method endorsed by Ceasar Milan that get's their attention and acknowledgement of an unwanted behavior and it is working great for me. I also use the "food reward" for a good behavior or action. But if the clicker is working for you...........GREAT!!!!

I also have never used the clicker training. I am glad that it is going well.

Sorry to hear about your Internet being down. Hopefully it will be up and running soon.

I LOVE clicker training. With this training you should wait until they perform the desired action before clicking, however, I've found that you can "make" them do certain actions for example "sit pretty" then click and treat. It simply marks the exact moment they've done the action. So cute when Leo sees the clicker/treats and goes crazy doing ALL his tricks until I give him a command:lol2: I also found that it could cause some confusion if you don't click at the right time. I'm glad that your finding success with this method...100% positive reinforcement, gotta love that.

Thanks.....yes it was going well !

The other night in class about half way through she lost interest.
No biggie she was doing well and thought maybe she was tired.

When we got home, she ran for the water bowl and downed it, took 5 steps and blew lunch all over the floor....YUCK. I felt so bad for her...been there done that!

Last night she really didnt feel like training...still not interested.

So I need to change her treats and go smaller :) and shorter sessions.

When we are at home I usually only go for 5 minutes at a time, class was an hour....probably 15 to 20 minutes of training on her little tummy.

Cathy what are you using for treats ? She is really picky...doesnt really like the solid gold treats...she will eat them but wont go nuts for them.

In class they suggested hot dogs....I didnt go there :)
We were using small pieces of ham..real small.

So she wont touch it now...I am thinking of dicing up some chicken tonight fresh off the grill....that I know she will like !

Still no internet....I am going CRAZY....last night I realized I dont even have a phone line right now....which is a good thing :)

For treats I use Zeeks natural mini treats (tho I've heard some say they cause tear stains), shredded mozzarella cheese, biljack treats cut up smaller (he loves these) and if he's not paying attention, I break out the deli meat, chicken, ham, beef (he goes nuts for this).

When I first started training Leo we only worked 5 min. a day and I used the shredded mozzarella cheese for treats. Sometimes he just isn't in the mood so I just wait for another time. He only gets treats when training so after a couple days he's more than ready to go again.

I hope your little sweetie is feeling better and isn't associating treats/training with getting sick!

Thought perhaps this information contained in the link below may help some who are interested in training options and it also discusses "clicker training."

Hello
I have had my little malt in "clicker training" for 24 weeks. He loves it and it has taught me so much. I just practice about 10 minutes a day and now that he is in advance class I have found that I can just practice about every other day. I use frozen peas when I am home training. Hard to take to class with you haha. As for his real "treats" I cut them up as small as possible cuz just a "little dab will do ya". When we have class I give him a smaller portion of his food to eat cuz I know he will fill up at class. Good luck with it. It has helped me tremendously P.S. When he "sits pretty" work in a wave with it and it makes it even cuter Chevy's mom!

Thanks for the Pea tip...I will give that a try !

This is Lizzies 2nd week, we are just getting to adding cue words for her first three commands. She is doing sits, downs and settle on a blanket.
I have gone to shorter sessions too, sometimes 3 times a day but what ever it takes.
She is doing great even at 4:30 am...when I get up for work :)

Class can be intimidating though with all the big dogs, there is a large
GSD that is insane interupting all the time.

Thanks for the welcome. You are lucky you can do such a great job with just a book. I had to go to classes to learn mine or should I say Chevy's tricks. I do truely enjoy the classes as does Chevy. I have heard plenty of pro's and con's on class. I guess we just got lucky and got a good trainer and plus it was my treat of the week to go out and take chevy somewhere to show him off.:hearter: He can still be a brat but at least when he does I can cue him to take a bow after his bratty appearance. :lol2: Keep up the excellant work. We did clicker training with Bella 4 weeks, one time each week we had a trainer come to the house and teach the whole family how to use this method. Bella was only 12 weeks and she's now 10 months and does all of her tricks. It was an awesome thing to connect her to the whole family. The trainer said she was really smart, too!:D We now use the clicker for a new trick on our own every so often.

I have been there with the 4:30 am training. Luckily our furbabies can't tell time and every little bit of training helps. I will say after Chevy had learned his "on your bed" which was cute, I thought I would never really use that I was wrong..now when I leave for work instead of just haveing him jump in his expen and giving him a treat, I threw in one of his few beds (spoiled yes I know) and now I tell him "on your bed" and in he goes straight to his bed. Now I feel good putting that cue to work. I hope you enjoy the classes as much as I do. Chevy still gets "overwhelmed" at times and will to 50 million (haha) tricks at once then just "drop over dead" on the floor with a sigh of "I dont know what you want from me" its actually funny. Good luck

Hi Toni

Yes isnt that a riot ! They offer everything only to have you look away or refuse it and its like they are saying WTF do you want :)

So far its been lots of fun and she is learning. Her whole attitude is changing for the better...Heck she hasnt tried to eat the wall since we started training and the chairs are safe now too !

Thanks, Toni. The clicker.... where is that darn thing when he "bows" after his nap?:lol2:

Leo's been procrastinating lately:blush: he's been working on target training but hasn't had the time in his busy schedule to perfect it.:(

Had class last night and she did well !

She was more focused and did better than most of the other dogs.
We are now working on having her sit/stay and settle/stay with varying times
before clicking and treating.

She was also able to hold down her treats too !
Guess fresh chicken off the grill agrees with her :)

Hmmm...grilled chicken. It's amazing what they'll do for the right treats. Congratulations and hugz to Lizzie for being such a smart little girl :bighug: You'll be surprised at how much she is capable of as time goes on. They just get smarter and smarter. I wish we had classes here, it would be fun to see how Leo would do with other dogs.

Sounds like the dogs are doing great. Chevy just had class and we practiced for the CGC (canine good citizenship test). One of the test was a 3 minute separation test from me. He did excellant with his trainer who I know he would go live with cuz he probabley thinks its like "grandma's house" you know "she always has treats" haha anyway they brought another worker in and well Chevy "flunked" big time. He cried the whole time. I could hear him in the back of the store. Big Baby!!! I called him "Ford" the rest of the day haha oh well it was just a for fun test but geeze "big looooooser" haha The other worker picked him up after class and snuggled with him cuz she felt bad he was crying "again Big Baby haha" Toni

But he did pass the 3 minute separation thing....My dog wouldnt last 1 minute for sure.
