View Full Version : Maltese Rescues?

Do you guys think it would be beneficial to have a place for Maltese rescues to be posted? Of course, this would only be for Maltese who need good homes, and who come along with a nominal fee.
thanks for your feedback

Sounds like a good idea, a form would be a good idea too then we would not have to ask all the questions from the poster!!

Andrea adopting a Rescue should not be an affordability issue . I chose Rescue to save a dog , not because I couldn't afford a pure bred off a breeder . Rescues can be more expensive than a puppy in the long run - I had to shell out quite a bit of money on behaviorists . If a person can't afford a puppy off a reputable breeder , they can't afford a Rescue . Sorry to lecture , but it was once suggested to me that I chose Rescue because it provided a cheaper option . I didnt mean it like that?? I meant they have love to give also and not all rescues cost alot of money in the long run, I mean some may need special care and all but I dont believe all those dogs in there do. I just meant people have loving homes and should be given a chance to share them.

I checked out a couple of rescues and while some of them do have medical issues that may cost you in the long run, if you can't afford that type of rescue then you should not adopt that particular rescue. I have rescues and they have cost me nothing but the normal "maintenance" each year with not issues out of the ordinary things. I am pleased with my kids and while they may need a little extra work to help them settle into an "entirely" different environment and setting, they are the most loving little dogs once they come around and once they are shown love and attention, something that most rescues are deprived of. I would not hesitate to adopt a rescue but I would only give caution that it be from a reputable rescue organization.
But the financial end for me was getting a great dog at a reasonable price with a pedigree!!! So rescues do not always mean big financial expenditures but doesn't mean they don't either. JMO

There are alot of people who turn to rescue for selfish reasons like they made a mistake didnt realize the work, they are having a baby, they are getting divorced, there are alot of reasons and I have seen time and time again HEALTHY dogs given up for these reasons and others, so I meant that people normally who could not afford it have an opportunity to, by going to these shelters and adopting them. I dont care if u paid 5000 for your dog nothing is guaranteed , you may always have medical issues or behavioral.:(

I SO AGREE WITH YOU ANDREA!!!!
Kallie's owners gave her up because of a new baby!!!
Toby's owners gave him up because they were going back to work.
Snickers's owners gave her up because of a divorce.
Puddles owners gave her up because of a move into an apartment.
Brandy's owners dropped her off at a dog pound in an outside lock up cause the original owner died and no other family member wanted her. A kill shelter where they took in over 8,000 animals and over 6,000 were euthanized. Not a good track record.
So people do give up "great" dogs for various selfish reasons and if you stumble upon some of these great dogs..........you will be happy to have them in your life.

I agree also, you know Sometimes I feel so guilty for saying I want to go to a reputable breeder I want a pup with a pedigree I want this I want that, when there are so many babies out there needing homes, I feel so selfish sometimes:( :( I have alot of thinking to do, cause I think I may have to change my views and maybe go with a rescue. Im so confused:(

Oh Andrea, don't feel guilty at all!!!! 5847
If I had the money, I would go for a pedigree from a Breeder in a heart beat..........not that I would give any of my rescues back and I'm certainly not disappointed in any of them but it is nice to have the "quality" and the back up of the breeder's guarantees as well. AND you sort of did a rescue with Nemo when you removed him from that puppy shop and had to care for his LP. So don't you even for one second feel guilty or selfish wanting a quality breeder's pup!!!! Don't even go there. Did I unconfuse you???:p
But if the right rescue comes along, there is nothing wrong with that either.

Me confused:confused: what are ya talking about:lol2: :lol2:
Your right Carol , It's just sometimes I wonder where my priorities are, I dont mean to say it's wrong to want a great pup from a great breeder I just meant I feel guilty sometimes about it:( Im really tired I need to sleep..LOL

Well, your desire to have a pedigree, quality dog should never make you feel guilty. If you allow your feelings of guilt to really take off, I am sure you would rescue every dog needing rescued but we all know that we can't do that. So it really is a personal decision and I would encourage you to go with your heart's desire to have a pedigree dog from a reputable breeder.........you will have no disappointments that can't be remedied.:) You have waited a long time to do this addition to your family so stick with your original plan!!! Snickers and Puddles were dogs I either had in the past, during or prior to my marriage to my hubby. Brandy is our current rescue that we adopted last Friday and I will be posting pics and a vid of the kids soon, I promise!!!:D

ok...let's say that if I take a dog to a shelter he's going to die soon, but if I take him to a rescue he may be adopted or, at least, survive:confused: correct?

Exactly. Most shelters are kill shelters. And a rescue is an organization that will house the dog, try to "fix" what may be wrong and screen potential families. Boy I hope that helps.

I just adopted a female maltese from a rescue who purchased her from a "pound." The pound took in over 8,000 animals and over 6,000 were euthanized so they are a place to take animals but they will put them down if they are not adopted out within a certain amount of time, if it is diseased or not adoptable (vicious). Some shelters are no kill, which means they will take in animals but are limited as to how many they can care for until someone adopts an animal making room for more to be taken in. Then you have rescue organizations which key in on large breeds, small breeds and particular breeds with the idea of fostering them in a home to be adopted out and sometimes they go to great expense to fix any medical issues or behavior problems. Does that help?

As you all know by now, we did get Brandy from a rescue (but it was a small mom & pop type). We have now spent over $200 getting her well. She had a cough and needed meds, she needed tags, microchipped, and will need a dental in Jan. So she was a little more than we had anticipated but she is so worth it. We rescued Kallie as well from an unfortunate situation but nonetheless spent an additional $250 to get her up to date on shots, tags, dental, spaying, etc. Mr. Toby.........just needed tags, microchipped and he was good to go but he was adopted because the owner had to go back to work not because of neglect as was the case with Kallie & Brandy. None of them were housetrained but all are 100% now. So with rescues comes financial and as Sarah said, some behavior issues to deal with.
Do I have regrets???? NOT A ONE!!!! They all have personality plus and are a joy to have around. They all cleaned up really nice and I get more compliements on them than I can list.
So why did I bring this up???? Cause as Sarah said Rescuing is not for everyone.........but if you have the $$ and want to give a dog in need a loving home, there are some really great ones out there. So are we going to get our Rescue forum?????
