Well, I know what to do. It's the rest of the family that doesn't! So now the barking has gotten worse so hubby just ordered me this ultra sonic thing. Has anyone had any experience or thoughts regarding this?

PetSafe Ultrasonic Bark Control System
* Automatic and manual ultrasonic bark control unit controls dog's barking behavior
* Sleek, tabletop device emits a 2-second ultrasonic tone
* Manual tone correction is effective up to 20 feet away
Petsafe LogoTabletop bark control device gives your dog an automatic or a manual ultrasonic tone correction when he barks. The internal microphone senses his barking and emits a 2-second ultrasonic tone that only he hears. He is startled, and he quickly learns to associate his behavior with the irritating sound. The unit can also be operated manually, within 20 feet, to stop other unwanted behaviors, such as digging in the trash or chewing. Powered by a 9-volt battery (not included). Measures 5" x 3-1/2" x 2". For all dogs. Lifetime limited manufacturer's warranty.

I don't know, but I would love to know how it works for you. I know what you mean about knowing what to do but the rest of the family doesn't. My girls don't bark when i come in the door, they know they are not allowed. But if my hubby comes in or the kids are running in and out my dogs love to all get started barking.

I'll be sure to keep everyone posted as I'm sure they will be interested! :D The thing I like most about this is the consistency of reinforcement, even when I'm not home. We'll see...

I was all set to order what Andrea used which is hand held and manual but along the same line with sonic sound transmission after reading her positive experience (Andrea, correct me if I'm wrong). I just hadn't gotten around to ordering it...so hubby calls me the other day and said he had ordered this for me. At first he said he was going to order a shock collar:eek: I say...over my dead body! Does anyone know of a shock collar for hubbies who bark? Please... let me know.:lol2:

This week it seems like he's barking more than usual. He barks at the girls when they get up in the morning and when someone comes to the door. I wonder now if the hand held, like yours, might be better so that a command can be given. Hmmm...

See now this is what I'm talking about with the rest of the family...way too much attention when he does bark. I keep saying...ignore his barking!!! If you yell at a dog they may think you are barking back at them. Thanks for the info, Carol.

I don't think that the ignoring thing works all of the time, however, when Leo first came home no one was allowed to respond to him (take him out) when barking in his crate so it stopped in about two days. I did the same when he'd bark at me for something (turn and pay no attention) which appeared to work (not perfect) until my beloved family thought they had it figured out...Yelling quiet, shut up...this is when everything became worse. Every dog is different, I know, but I believe if you "bite the bullet" through those first months the rewards will be ten fold in the future.
Okay, so about the shock collar thingy  .....somehow I just knew a man would find this thread! All in fun my dear J, hope you weren't too offended.:wink5: Tell your wife I hope she finds great success in clicker training, it didn't work for me...with my husband that is.:lol2: :lol2:

I use the Cesar Milan signal sound to control the barking which is just a sound that they become familiar with that shows your disapproval of a behavior. Now the yorkie responds great to my sound, followed by "quiet, no barking" and is totally quiet. Now Kallie is stubborn and still will throw in a bark or two after the sound/verbal command is used. So she still needs additional training one on one for success. Brandy is too new to know how she will respond but she is not a barker to begin with so I don't think I will have any issues with her.:D

Well, as I said, Toby picked up on it right away and I am still working with Kallie. Brandy has already accepted the no barking command. I think Kallie is just being a stubborn matriarch. But I will not give up on her, I am determined to get her to listen..........REPETITION AND LOTS OF PATIENCE!!!

I got the Petsafe ultrasonic, it was more money but I got it tonight :)
I can return it if I decide to get the other one but It's WORKING ! :D
PetSmart said I could take up to 900 days to return it.....crazy ?
Hit the manual button when she did something wrong and she immediately stopped.
Will keep you updated but so far so good ! I paid $39 for it but I really dont care !
If it can stop her from bad behavior and barking....way cool.

What happens when you just tell Leo "no bark"? Bella only barks if she hears the doorbell or something weird. Its almost like she's thinks she's this big guard dog or something, so funny, but back to my point a firm no bark and she gets the message.

Well, nothing happens when I say "quiet". Yeah, Leo's our guard dog, our doorbell, our alert when the neighbor dogs are over, if he wants something... this just started a couple months ago and I think it has to do with so many mixed messages from the rest of family. They don't know it (or should I say won't accept it), but they are actually training him to bark! He used to bark, but it wasn't much...

Well no wake up call this morning....either I wore her out last night playing or she didnt want to bark....dont know ! Time will tell !
She isnt bad or anything....just has a few things to work out.
She likes to jump up at plants and eat the leaves, sometimes knocking them over. Also likes to take the paper towels and empty the roll all over the floor....Just one click and she Dropped it, otherwise I'd be chasing her all over to get it.Its actually funny to see her running with the paper towel roll going down the hall way...I thought it was but my wife ....no so much :)
Yes Us guys love our toys.....
Oh OK here is the deal.... for it to work automatic it needs to be within 10 feet of the dog, and it will only correct for Barking...not crying or wimpering :)
The manual button is good for up to 20ft and works well, you can hold it in your hand although its slightly larger than the blue Pet Agree.
The Pet safe one I think is better because it can correct when your not
around so its more consitant. But like Andrea said it wont take long and you probably wont need it forever !
Either one should do the trick.....good doggie :)
Now if only I could use it on my wife.....when she takes the TV Remote....

Well she is smarter than I am !
Lizzie knows she can get out of range to bark when its on automatic, she just runs to the other side of the house.
Also it only will go off on multiple barks when she is close to it.
If I sit there and use manual she responds to it, looking at me as to say
WTF ?
It has worked real good when she steals someting, say drop it and hit the button and she does it.
Im not sure but I think she can get use to it and have it not bother her..
we shall see.
Her barking is reduced but not 100% effective, but its better than before.
I wish the unit could let you know when it was going off, the little red light on the front would be ideal for this but its only for battery life.

okay, day one....it isn't the miracle cure for barking. I got the WTF look and immediate quiet yesterday. Thought it was gonna work great!:D
day two...major barking...is this thing going off automatically? I don't know, so I decide to zap him manually...kind of worked... then I decide that I need to take action with the zap, so I stand in front of Leo and tell him "quiet" and then "sit" and then big time praise. When the hubby got home tonight he mentioned that he thought Leo was doing better. I don't think total elimination of barking is an obtainable goal :lol2: however, I've been getting in front (commands from behind him sitting in my comfy chair don't work) of Leo and owning that space commanding "quiet" consistently (sort of):o and I think we're making a little progress. I hope the zapper is working at the same time...tho I wonder. I'm learning, just like you!:D
Ear plugs would be a sure thing :lol2:

Glad to hear your making progress....I thought I was !
Last night using it in manual mode she couldnt care less and at around 2am she decided to bark her little head off with it 2 feet away from her.
And again at 4:15....I have my own fury alarm clock....Sweet !
I think I am going to call the house a few times during the day just to wake her up :)

Well I gave up on the sonic things, they are not working period !
I went and bough the Lap Dog trainer from Innotek, its for small dogs .
It is a shock collar but not really too strong ! I tried it out on myself before I bought it...at Petsmart they thought I was STRANGE !
I only tried it out on level 1 and 2 :)
Well before you all jump all over me..... I couldnt use it !
I would rather live with the barking than use it....I dont have the heart to do it to her.
Its not really that strong but I dont want to do it to her, she is so cute and sweet....so what if she barks !
I dont want her to be scared or anything....
Just have to return it !

Oh, J...I'm so glad you decided not to use the shock collar (i wanna know how it felt on you:lol2: did your eyes bug out or anything? ). I believe with small dogs especially that it could result in more problems. They just don't need it.
Now for the sonic thing... I still think it works or rather reinforces my commands.
I wonder if she is sensing some anxiety from you when she barks? Maybe try ignoring her when she's barking...this worked great for Leo when he was in his crate. No one was allowed to let him out or respond to him while he was in his crate (barking) and now he NEVER barks when he's in there. As a matter of fact, last week my hubby got home before me while I picked up kids in town and didn't get home til 7:00 pm. Leo was still in his crate:mad: Why did hubby not let him out??? Well, he says, Leo didn't say anything...now if I'm going to be late, I remind him to make sure and let Leo out.:D Still have to keep working on it when he's out of his crate tho.:wink5:
Don't give up! She's just a baby, she'll get it...

I bought a shock collar for my Bull Terrier and I couldn't do it either. It is like the shock you get when you put a 9 volt battery on your tounge. Unpleasant but not really painful.....but I felt bad so I didn't put it on him.......and that one barks at the wind. Every lawn mower, weedwacker and pressure cleaner bothers him so no one sleeps in late on the weekends.:(

Like Mia's mom said it like sticking your tongue on a 9 volt battery on level 1 anyway and the 2 was considerably stronger. My eyes stayed in my head but who knows on level 3 or 4 ! I can always try it when I get home tonight :)
Lizzie is barking at the wind too....and anything that she hears on TV.
She is waking up at 4:15 now and lets out a few barks to get me up, not really a big deal as I get up at 4:30 anyways but she doesnt know when its the weekend ! Just wish I could turn it off....
We are just going to try to work through it , and tell her No Bark and praise her when she stops.....

OK last night I played with the shock collar, just to see how bad it could really be.....Well let me tell you....it hurts !!!
I was watching TV and started to play with it, collar in one hand and remote in the other. I was going to start out on 1, low and work my way up to 4
Much to my suprise I started on 4 and it got quiet a reaction from me as I threw it across the room. My wife was on the floor laughing, she could smell something burning...not sure if it was my hand or maybe some gas :)
So if that wasnt enough I played with 3 and 4 a coupe of times....just for my wifes amusement.....and then put it up to my neck.....yes its very sensitive there and used 1 and 2....sorry no way I was going over that !
Well I have had my fun...going to return it as soon as I can :lol2:

I agree with both of you. For me, it is not the "humane" solution to barking nor the right of a human to take away the ability of man's best friend's way of communication. It is sad that vet's will perform the procedure!:( :(

I read on another site that a can with coins will also discourage barking.
Drop it on the floor and say no bark.....tried it a few times tonight and it seems to be getting her attention....without blowing out her stiches :)
I know it sounds crazy but......
John
I've heard the same thing John!!! And I have heard that if they are diggers in the yard, throwing the can near them when they are digging is a way to discourage them from digging..

OK well the can is pretty dented up on the bottom and I really dont think Lizzie cares anymore....Yesterday she barked her head off all day and night.
She was resting around 9pm last night and I SO wanted to go bark in her face !
I dont know whats going on with her but she is a real Hell Cat the past 2 days.
I though that the spay would slow her down a bit, maybe not be as high strung...WRONG Again Dear...she is off the wall.
You know when we got her we THOUGHT she was going to be a lapdog.....
the amount of times she has actually sat on any one of our laps you can count on one hand and only briefly....
I am beginning to think I spoiled her or something, I give her 100% of my attention when I am home.....I havent sat on the couch in months !
I am always on the floor playing with her and so does my wife and daughter.
Maybe I shouldnt have stopped using the crate ??? She is in a decent sized X-Pen / Condo that any dog would envy.....
We cant eat in peace....she is like a Jumping bean.....Boing Boing Boing all around the table.....Oh and the incessant barking....I am having a breakdown......
I think I am going to use the crate as a Time out area and see if that helps.
I really wish I kept that darn collar.....Id use it on myself just to have fun !
Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated !
I am at my wits end.....I need to start drinking or something :)
Could this be her TERRIBLE two's ????

John,
Some dogs are just barkers and sometimes you need to try alot of things before you find one that works! I mean the barking one I used worked after one time:confused: all I say now is "NO BARK" and Nemo just stops, no need to use the actual device he just knows what the sound is like and prefers not to hear it. I really hope you find some kind of solution, I know how annoying it is It gets on my nerves big time

Well John, the dog whisperer suggests that you lightly tap them in the front of the chest with your hand shaped so that the nails are facing the chest and say "no barking" and just repeat the action (repetition). The hand put in that position is suppose to resemble a dog's mouth and this is the way the packleader of a pack corrects behaviors in his pack. So you are the packleader. Everyone should follow the same correction procedure so Lizzie gets the point. Of course you don't want to hurt her but merely get her attention. I did it with Toby and he does great when I say no bark now without any tapping at all. Brandy is not a barker. Kallie does good but still needs reminders with a light tap. It's just a suggestion that I read from his book and it may not work for you either but just wanted to put this out there for you to try if you wanted to.................the terrible two stage will pass:D :D :D

Hi Andrea
Hmm not really getting too much better yet.... we are trying what Carol suggested. It does stop her from barking but you need to be in arms reach for it to be effective. And if she is hyper....which is about 90% of the time she will start to eat your fingers when you poke her.
Last couple of days she has been mouthy, not really biting but mouthing everything.
She has nipped me a few times when we are playing, I think more by accident than anything....she isnt mean at all....just happy hyper and barky.
Oh the puppy stages.....you always tend to forget this when you are getting a new puppy...

I wonder about alpha issues... this is something I really worked at after having my little pom whom had similar barking and behavioral issues. Wasn't gonna let it happen again. So I found these links that may be helpful...don't get me wrong, Leo can still be a little scamp from time to time and has a somewhat submissive nature (he ain't perfect) but I truly believe taking the reigns to be the boss made all the difference in the world. Holding back all my love was tough but I started from day 1. Create positive training time daily as well. This works well with my skin kids too.:p

Funny you would post about barking John because Marco said a co-worker was going to loan him "some kind of machine" that lets out a sound when Zoe barks. I told him that she would learn how far to get away to not set off the machine and that I don't want to stop all barking (her job is to notify us of strangers you know). He said he was thinking at night when we are sleeping and she hears a car and barks.;)

Hi Elizabeth
You could always try it and see, every dog is different with them.
I dont think it would completely eliminate barking though so if she felt
threatened she would /could bark her head off :)
And yes they only have a short range but you could put it in the bedroom with you.
Lizzie is funny at night now, when she is sleeping if a plane goes by she will let out little woofs......Like she is too tired to get up and Bark !
Honestly I dont think anything will keep them from barking .....I tried just about everything only to have it not be effective after a week or 2.

I think all dogs bark ......... it's their way of communicating (saying hi, asking for food, alerting, etc). I just try to concentrate on "appropriate" times to allow them to bark. When someone comes in my home like a technician/inspector/etc.........I let them bark their heads off as this is a person that will most likely not be coming back and I WANT them to continue to be on the alert for this type of "stranger." But I do put them on the lanai and they can see the person and bark. Now if someone comes in that is a friend and it is their first time meeting the dogs, then I hold Toby as he pees when he is scared (new person) and the girls I let jump around and bark for a short period of time and then proceed to tell them that "it's ok"......"no barking".....Toby then just has a low growl until they have been here a bit and Brandy just loves whoever walks through the door. Kallie will continue to bark a bit and then I proceed to tell her "no barking" ........ Toby is the only one that usually takes his time making up to new people.
But bottom line, I want mine to bark to alert me to sounds, people and situations! After all, I did get them to be "guard dogs.":lol2: :lol2: :lol2:

Mine bark when they hear a door open. They had their own room until recently and wouldn't bark when we open the doors because they could see us from their room. Now since all they hear is the door open when they are in my room it's a barking match. So I decided to seperate them. Cody & Peanut are sleeping in my sons room and Mia is in my room at night. (Peanut would set every one off barking) Since my son is the one that constantly is going in and out of his room at night the barking is much less.
