Kira just started this weird cough. It sounds like something is stuck in her throat. For us it's like an itchy cough we are trying to relieve. Drinking water doesn't seem to help. Poor thing. I'll continue to monitor her.

I was thinking that as well. She did get her bordatella shot several days before I boarded her but I wonder if that was long enough for the vaccine to work. The last bordatella shot she had was 6 months ago.
She did it again this morning. Poor thing, it seems she trying to hack up something but can't. I'm going to call my vet this morning to see if she can be seen.
She just started it last night. We had to sleep in the other room so she wouldn't wake up Carlos.

As you know Brandy had a bad cough like she had something stuck in her throat and they treated her for the kennel cough but of course after two weeks of antibiotics, they discovered it was from the collapsed trachea.
Did Kira have her Bordatella shot before she went to the kennel? If not she could have picked it up there but most likely they would not have let you board her if she had not received the vaccine. So, the other thing is, if you have never given her the bordatella shot before, there is the slight chance that she actually caught it from the vaccine. If the coughing persists, I would see the vet. If it is kennel cough, it will get worse before it gets better but sometimes it will go away on its own from what I have read. But they usually treat it with antibiotics. Just keep us updated on how she is doing; please.

I went to see them both at lunch time and she still has the cough.
I just want to give her cough medicine just to ease the discomfort I think she's feeling but I don't want to mess up anything.
She is playing, drinking and eating without difficulty, so that I'm glad about.

Laurie I just went and done a search on the reproduction site that I am on. They say that it is safe to give Robitussin. The dosage I do not know but maybe you can call the vet and them tell you how much. Good luck honey and I hope your baby gets to feeling better soon.:hearter:

Hi Carol, Kira got her bordatella shot 5 days before. But I'm sure it didn't help, just like the flu shot, we could get the shot but it doesn't mean we couldn't get the flu.
I'm sorry about Brandy's collapsed trachea. What does the vet say?

You are very welcome Laurie. Does she sleep in a crate. I have read where a humidifier will also help. If she is in her crate all you do is cover it with a blanket and leave a little opening on each side. In one of the openings have the air from the humidifier and the other just needs to be there so the air can kinda move out. If that makes any since.
Good luck again. I hope she gets to feeling better and you all have a restful night.

Becky, she doesn't sleep in a crate. She sleeps with us on our bed. I don't have a humidifier but I have given her some robitussin. She had a small episode but it didn't last very long.
She has an appt with the vet tomorrow at 10:45 a.m. so I'll wait to see what they say. I have recorded her coughing episode from this morning so they can hear how it sounds.
Once again, I really appreciate all your concern and advice. I love you gals!

I hope you will update us when you get back from the vet. I did the same thing when Brandy had her cough. I recorded it and he listened to it and then chose to do an x-ray to see the trachea. I am sure it isn't that with Kira, but most likely a reaction to the vaccine........but it is a fixable situation with antibiotics..........just breaks the heart to watch them cough and so hard with all the body trying to clear their throats. It just sounds so horrible to hear and horrible to see. I went throught that with Brandy and it broke my heart especially since she had the stitches from the spaying as well. But she is better and I am sure Kira will be better soon too.:)

They prescribed amoxicillin for the next 7 days.
They were really good to her. They will call me in a couple of days to check up on her.

I'm sorry, yes they did say it was Kennel Cough, even though she was vaccinated against it. They did say that it takes about 3-7 days to manifest after exposure.
She's still coughing but not as intense as before. They weren't going to prescribe her anything at first, they said it would resolve on it's own, but I didn't want her to suffer and I didn't want it to get worse. I requested the antibiotics myself. And they were nice enough to give it to me without problems.

All the literature you read says it will clear up by itself but it is devastating to hear that cough and I insisted on meds too with Brandy as I was sure that she had caught it from the shot she was given in Aug.!!!!! But then it turned out that it was the collapsed trachea but that could have been brought on by her coughing. She was on antibiotics for two weeks and she appeared to be better the first week but then it did not improve. So now she is on some other meds for the inflamed trachea and it has helped tremendously.
Thanks for the update Laurie.......I feel your pain with Kira and the coughing. It is horrible to listen to. Did the doctor say anything about giving her a cough suppressant as well???? They did give some to Brandy and it helped a lot to calm her coughing while the antibiotics worked. But the new meds are doing the "real" trick and she is coughing very little. Was LB given the vaccine as well???? If not she could catch it from Kira.

I'm so sorry about Brandy, Carol:( But, I'm glad to hear she's doing great on the meds. Give her some extra hugs from me.
I couldn't have Kira coughing like that for long, even though it doesn't seem to affect her in other areas, it just sounded so uncomfortable. I told them I have her on Robitussin (Thank you Becky) and they said that was fine.
LB had her Bordatella shot in June so she is okay. Thank goodness.
