Hey what do you use for the elastics ? something special ? Yes I know BOWS!
Everytime we do Lizzie it gets real gummy / sticky and we have to cut it out.
I read that some use barrets....I am affraid that Lizzie would EAT it if it fell out and would be visiting the vet (:

It's important to use "latex" bands so that it does not damage the hair and I never pull the bands out, I CUT THEM OUT. So I put one latex to hold the hair for Kallie and then use a paper to fold around it, fold it over and then band it again. Then the bow goes over that (and yes, I cut all the bands except the ones on the bows of course). Toby gets a band to hold the hair and then I use a second band to fold over the topknot and then put the bow in (and yes, I cut all the bands except the ones on the bows). Brandy's hair was cut so short on the top and over her eyes that there is not enough to make a topknot yet but it will be the same process that I use on Kallie. AND of course if I do a double topknot then then I use four latex bands for the do!!! They are really reasonable. Check this place out:

You do have to be careful with the barrets, she is still a puppy & would maybe try to eat it. Your best bet is the bands, i use orthodontic bands. You do have to cut them out everyday & re-do the top knot

John you need to change their top knots every day (I sometimes change it 2x a day because they are always playing) they tend to collect dust and particles for some reason and I always try to remember cut them off also. I use the rubber bands then I put in the barrett just below the band so if the band is on correctly the barretts should stay in the hair.

The paper is what mostly show people use to put top knots in! You can buy it from human hair supply shops, you can also use the mesh for top knots! If you get really good at it you can wrap the paper round the top knot & then add the band on top of the paper, this also reduces the breakage caused by the bands.

I tried the mesh and the plain papers and I prefer the mesh as it is easier to work with and does not slip around when you are trying to wrap it around the topknot. I bought them from Sally Hansen Beauty Supply and they are almost dirt cheap.........I paid like $2.48 for 500 sheets. They are called "Professional Mesh End Wraps" (2/1/8 x 3 1/8 inches). They keep the second latex band (the type the dentist uses as was mentioned before, not just any rubber band). It seems to hole the topknot in place better and it also make for easier removal of the bow because the bow is on the paper and not the hair. But redoing the topknot is a must for the protection of the hair to keep a nice topknot. A little extra work but well worth it and once you get the hang of it, it does not take more than five minutes to do a double topknot.
You might want to take a look at this site for help with the topknots and use of the papers.

I am so sorry but the Title of this thread made me laugh. Topknot Hell, I know well. Best thing I could share with you other then the papers that have been mentioned is PRACTICE. You can get this under control! And a product we use to help at times is #1 All Systems invisible hold Setting and Styling Gel. It helps hold up the "strays".
Good luck! Keep at it,
Melanie

I will have to try that gel because I am not happy with the Pet Silk gel as it seems to leave a slight yellow tinge to the otherwise very white hair. I was wondering too about any build up from regular use of the #1 All Systems invisible hold setting and styling gel. Is it clear and not residue?

I think any product will have build up if you use it alot. I just don't use all this crap in Nemos hair but like I said Nemo is white so I am lucky. When I first got him I bought everything:o but I realized it's all the same in my opinion/

Well, the petsilk gel does leave a yellow tinge in the hair but it does hold it in place for the topknot stragglers so I can use it on Toby's topknot...........so if the stuff Melanie mentioned works and does not leave a tinge, then I may try that! The petsilk gel does smell wonderful though.

It looks light pink in the container but goes on clear and I have never had it leave any color at all on Wookie's hair. I really like this product.
Good luck!

Those of you who dont DO top knots, how do you keep the hair out of their eyes ??
Andrea......where is your avitar when I need it !!!!!
My wife wants to see them without the top knots, she feels bad doing it to her and thinks that shorter would be better as well as around her face.
Thanks
John
