View Full Version : 1st Drug for Obese Canines

This drug was just approved Friday for obese dogs. It's called Slentrol. You can only get it from the vet (available by Spring) at $1-$2 a dose.
They consider a dog obese if it is 20% more than its ideal weight.
The drug is a liquid and it triggers a feeling of satiety or fullness.
As with any drug--there are side effects::p :p :p
1. loose stools
2. diarrhea
3. vomiting
4. lethargy
5. loss of appetite
It's not a cure and the effects cease within a day or two of stopping treatment.
Would any of you consider giving this to your dog?
I don't think I would. I'd rather try a different food and walk and play more with my pet.:dogwalk: Those side effects are enough to turn me off. When a pet has loose stools and can't let you know--well, we all know what that mess and smell can do to a carpet!!!:sickie:
This is my first thread and I'm as excited as a puppy with an open bag of doggy treats when my human isn't looking!!! Wait a minute--if I did that I just might need that darn drug!

I honestly don't think I would ever use such a drug. Like you I would exercise them more and change my babies food. I would only ever consider something like that if my baby was dangerously over weight and in grave risk of becoming seriously ill.
However I would never let my baby get to a point like that, so NO I would never use it nor should I ever need it (Maybe I myself should give it ago, I do need to lose 5-6kgs LOL).
CONGRATULATIONS on your first thread.:clapsm: :cheer: :goodpost:

Ummmm no I would never use a drug for that. Nope, never.
Scrappy has gotten a little chubby so we are walking more and playing harder and I have changed his food already.
I sort of think that is the lazy way out and if it stops being effective once you stop giving it........ what then

What ever happened to feeding the dog less and getting more exercise . I seriously doubt that drug would get approval in Australia . My shih tzu Henry IS quite the pudding though , so maybe he needs some drug therapy . Sarah

Cheryl, congrats on starting your first thread. Now that you have broken thru, I hope we can expect to see more threads started by you. You are a quiet little thing, but we can take care of that!!!! I would never give the drug to either of mine. They were saying on the news that it is not safe for humans, so I certainly would not give it to a tiny dog - even one who wasn't so tiny!!!

No, wouldn't go the drug route to help with a fat dog.......too many other options out there to use that are a lot safer...........diet dog foot and exercise to start.:)

I'm really surprised you had to ask Cheryl. But maybe they don't have it where you are since it is so cold! It's a lotion you put on their feet and is absorbed through the pads that reduces their appetite! I haven't had to use it on mine as they eat diet dog "food."
:lol2: :sidesplit: :sidesplit: :p Do we have another "spelling queen" aboard!???

Carol, you know I don't give a rat's rear end how anyone spells - I am the worst, but as I told you, it really is the demons in my keyboard - I spell it right and as soon as I click the send button, they go to work scrambling the letters. I just knew Elaine would catch that, so I had to beat her since she wasn't online at the time. Not too often I can get the jump on her!!! By the way, as for diet foot lotion, I think my feet, at a size 7, are about the right size, but if you happen to have any diet butt lotion, could you send me a truckload - that might be a good start!!! It might make a dent (or should I say dimple) in it.

Morkie4----I didn't think you had a spelling mistake--I honestly thought you knew of some great product that I hadn't heard of yet. If you can come up with that lotion I'll buy it. Wait a minute--it was a mistake, right? Or do you really have that miracle lotion by you?

I'd be glad to ship the diet butt lotion to you..........but I have to warn you it is very very expensive and smells very bad. It also has some serious side affects as well. Gives you a small butt within three weeks but causes your feet to grow at least eight inches. Oh and if you stop using it, the previous butt size returns but the foot stays at the increased eight inches. Do you want me to still send you some of the diet butt lotion?
I've been trying to sell it on Ebay for two years now............But I've not had a single bid! Can you believe it? :sidesplit: :sidesplit:

Maybe I should get Greg some butt cream - he doesn't need to loose any off his booty, but the 8" foot growth might not be all bad - you know what they say about men with big feet????? I don't think the butt cream smelling bad would be a big problems - most things that come from around that area don't exactly smell like roses, ya' know!!! You should perfect that invention honey, something like it makes your boobs grow bigger instead of your feet, and still you booty smaller. I could ill afford that either as they are already too big. Let's just say that if I were ever in a plane crash over the sea, I would not need one of their self inflating floatation devices, In fact, I could invite several other passengers to sit on them also!!

Andrea, define people people - if you mean humans - it's not supposed to. Oh girls, by the way, I was not insinuating that my hubby needed more in "that dept", he definitely doesn't. My mind just drifted there for a few minutes. They say that men think about sex every 30 seconds - I must have high levels of testosterone. Stop it Cheryl!!!

QUOTE: I'm just not sure I can really help you with the booty problem but, do you want the butt cream for Greg or not??? Just a word of caution, his feet will grow but he might end up with no butt. You were unclear on that. OH, and I think I might have something for the boob situation...........I do know of a cream for reduction that works on your boobs and really works great! HOWEVER........and you knew it was coming..........when you use the boob creme it also has a side affect that may not be to your liking or Greg's, for that matter. You see with this particular creme, you also have chest hair growth. And one other thing, there is no reversing the results.
Let's just say that if I were ever in a plane crash over the sea, I would not need one of their self inflating floatation devices, In fact, I could invite several other passengers to sit on them also
In veiw of this information, could you possibly tell me the next time you are going to fly...........I don't like to fly, but I would feel so comfortable knowing you were on the same plane with me.........I mean, like just in case we crash or something, I would have a little extra comfort and security knowing you were on board with your extra floatation devices.

Gosh Carol, decisions, descisions. Guess I had best leave well enough alone and let Greg keep his nice butt and he has a hairy chest, so I think one in the family is the best route to go. Sometimes I think it just isn't fair - women are the ones who have to have the monthly curse, have the babies, get saggy boobs, get fat, etc. etc. etc. If a man's hair turn gray, he is known as distinguished - if a woman's hair turns gray, she is old. If a man gains weight, he is "husky, solid, or stocky", if a woman gains weight, she is "a cow". But then I remember that men are the one's who have to provide for the family and go out in the dog eat dog world every day. guess it evens out. See, I told you that my mind wanders......

So that's a no for both cremes? Talk about wanderng minds!!!! Well, yes, you have one! I am guilty too...........start out thinking one thing and somehow end up in a whole different discussion. Husband says he just can't keep up with me, I have too many discussions going on in my mind at one time and he is not a mind reader. But then we all know that men cannot multitask!!! LOL The picture I posted of me was "before" I tried all those cremes............this site would crash again if I posted the after shot of using the cremes for just two weeks! LOL

Thank you for the great comedy routine!! I was laughing and crying so hard I was having a difficult time reading all those crazy comments. My butt is already big and can stay that way and I wear a size 11 shoe anyway, so I don't think I'll use the lotion. But I have a few "friends" that could use it. If I sat on the plane with you I could help hold up our whole section. We wouldn't have a thing to worry about.

What amazes me is Greg, who has like maybe 8% body fat, cannot float - sinks like a rock. On the other hand, I who have 217% body fat floats like a life raft. Does that make sense? Okay, again my mind has wondered. Carol, we once named one of our horses Greche' (rhymed with mesh)...it was the first 3 letters of each of our names. Nothing interesting like Ca-Bob. Named another one Adcott, which was a combination of my sons middle names. See, again my thoughts are off in a totally different direction. What, some of you might ask, does this have to do with a drug for overweight dogs? Well, not a dam* thing!!!! I guess it's a good thing my boobs are so big, makes my butt look not so out of balance. Okay, think I will go take my medication now........

I have laughed so hard reading this thread, you girls crack me up.
Cheryl when you said about the size of a mans foot, I just cracked up.
When my eldest son was in grade 2, he got a new teacher mid year, and he was HOT, Tall and HUGE feet. My son and his mate said to me ( sitting around with other mums) "mum did you see the size of Mr ? feet???, do you know what the means??", Well us mums looked at him trying no to laugh ( thinking dirty thoughts) I said " No mate what does that mean? ", My son answered " It means he would be a great soccer player", well us mothers could no longer hold back and just laughed and laughed.

No not one of the original. I think the site started in 2005, don't know exactly when but I saw some posts that dated back that far "before" the site crash..........think I came on in October 2006. If you go the "Members List" you can click on individual members and it will tell you when they joined the site.........I've done that a couple of times and found one that dated back to August, 2005. Guess the site didn't really take off until recently. If you want to sit around and gab, you will have to join us one Friday on Yahoo IM chat...........it gets crazy sometimes!!! LOL

Cheryl, I live around the 225 exit off of I-25 and Longmont is the 240 exit. I go there pretty often to meet friends for lunch. Takes me 25-30 minutes. As for hotels between here and you, couldn't tell you. Just about the only time we travel without the motorhome is when we are taking a cruise, so we only stay in them on the night before embarkation and the day we get off the ship, and of course, the hounds are with us then. Oh, I do get taken away usually for a romantic weekend for our anniversary but we don't take the dogs then either. They do travel in the motorhome with us though. Give a holler if you come this way...
