BEFORE anyone votes, I will have to get one of the moderators to fix the choices. I forgot to select the multiple choices for you to be able to select more than one choice..........please be patient until Admin can fix it. THANKS and sorry!

My malts, Poochie and Skippy both have dewclaws. Henry my rescue didn't have them when we adopted him. Teddy my Yorkie, does not have dewclaws. Teddy had huge, loose dewclaps and after consulting with our vet, had them removed at the same time of his neuter. I know everyone says its very painful to have them removed and I was sooooooooo worried about Teddy, but he really did fine. He recovered very quickly, thank goodness.

I think all dew claws should be removed while pup is 2-3 days old as a standard practice by breeders. They are such a pain to clip.

Jack doesn't have the dewclaws.
Is it common practice for Maltese not to have them? Max didn't have them either.

I couldn't select more than one answer so I didn't vote.
But Sugar and Candie do have their dewclaws.
Daisy (border collie mix) still has her dewclaws as well.
But the rest of them, yorkies included all had them removed.

Yup, both my girls have their dewclaws. It is quite a pain to trim them.

I had never heard of a dewclaw.
Is this a bad thing?

A dew claw is a fifth claw on the dog located higher up towards the wrist. It is not necessarily a bad thing but it isn't necessary for them to keep it either as it serves no purpose. With dewclaws if you don't get them removed, you will have to really keep up with keeping them trimmed because they tend to curl and if not trimmed often enough will curl around into the skin which makes it very painful for the dog. They also tend to get caught on things easier.
So as long as you keep up with keeping the dewclaw trimmed you shouldn't ever have any problems. But you can get them removed when they are pups at a few days old so you won't ever have to worry about it.
