I wasn't sure whether this should be posted her or on the Health section, but here goes my question..
Do you (or your groomer or vet) express your maltese's anal glands? My previous dog used to have to have this done and now I am thinking that maybe Zoe needs this done too. The smell is horrible!!
And if you do this yourself, how do you do it exactly?
Thanking you in advance

Okay hun, you asked...here's a link:D Let me know how everything comes out :lol2: just kiddin:D http://www.expertvillage.com/videos/dog-grooming-basics-glands.htm
I've been encouraged and shown how to do this by a groomer/breeder friend of mine and just couldn't do it. I don't think this has been done to Leo yet but my pom, Nala had to have this done by her groomer.

Awww, it is not that hard to do once you get the hang of it. I do all my own grooming so once a month I just give the little "squeeze" and sometimes there is some and some times not. And of course when they get a dental, it sort of comes with the package!!!!:D

I am not sure if I can do this, but thanks for the video (where on earth did you find that?!?). My groomer told me that she didn't do that for Sophie because "it comes out on it's own". Yeah, sometimes on mom when we are traveling to NC and both parents want to throw up.
Zoe's going to the vet on Monday and I will mention it then. I also have to ask about having teeth removed when she gets spayed on Thursday and I am considering asking about microchipping too. Maybe that's too much at once for her?

The link I gave has lots of training videos...just go search within their site. I think it's great.
If my dog's ummm "stuff" came out on it's own I would haul a$$ to the groomer or vet to have "it" expressed NOW.:lol2: and yet my friend says it's no big deal.  If you got the stomach I would say give it a try.
About the teeth...unless you will be showing her, you may not need the teeth extracted and spend that money. I asked my vet about this and he said wait at least til their 9 months before doing anything and sure enough they all came out even tho he had a double row of teeth for a while.:)
Microchipping is ALWAYS a good thing.

Mia had 3 teeth removed, spayed & microchipped all at the same time. None worse for the wear.

Oh no, I know I couldn't do the glands myself. I'll gladly pay for that service.:D
Elizabeth, my Poochie, had 6 teeth removed, neutered and microchipped and everything went fine. He was only around 3 lbs at that time and he recovered very quickly. All of mine are microchipped except Max my GS. He is tattooed.

This is true Elaine...........once I got the kids on "good quality food" and the stools were as they should be, I've not had to express the anal glands at all. I've tried a couple of times but never anything so only try it once a month now and still nothing. So I feel with the good diet and firm stools, the glands are doing their job and excreting the "goop" with each "poop.":lol2: :lol2:

:lol2: :lol2: :lol2: yes I saw your post but I'm 100% sure anal glands do not "expand or get extracted." I am sure they are "expressed"
And it is ok to have similar thoughts, isn't it?????  :tounge:
