Smokey is wonderful... he really is. His biggest downfall is potty training. This is unlike something I've ever dealt with. He won't potty when he's out of his crate except for maybe a couple itty bitty pee spots on the carpet, but when he's in his crate, he potties there. Each is different though. If we are sleeping, he does it, then tells us or he just goes back to sleep in it. When we leave, even for litterally 2 minutes to go downstairs, we come up and he's pee'd and pooped all over. I'm thinking that has to do with anxiety. The part when we're sleeping I think has to do with coming from a puppy mill. I don't know what I can do! I'm so frustrated and I'm trying not to be because I know it's not his fault but I just don't know what to do! Suggestions?

How big is the crate? It should only be were he can turn around in it. Make sure you don't put a pee pad in there either. As soon as you let him out either put him out side to do his business or put him on a pad.

His crate is a fine size for him and the lady we got him from said he did the same thing there too. Even if we just go downstairs for a minute to do laundry, we come back up and he's already pooped and pee'd everywhere and then we have to put him in the bath. We literally have to give him a bath at least 2 to 3 times a day.

Ashley if it was me I would just take him out of his crate all together and start again, do you have a gate so when you not around you can block him off in the kitchen? I would just put the pads on the floor and retrain him that way then at least he isn't in the crate going all over himself, it may be he is telling you he doesn't want to be confined, I dont know Im guessing:(
I can imagine your frustration, but i don't see the use of putting him in there when it will just make things worse and make more work for you, let him have the kitchen area and keep it blocked off, he may just take to the pads and realize that is where he is supposed to go..
Good Luck:o

Andrea what you have said makes perfect since. I know that with Ezekiel he came from a mill and he did the same exact thing. It sounds like he is scared when he goes in the crate or left alone. Maybe the vet can give you something to calm him a little. I am not sure but I know that this could be the issue.

I agree with andrea, Ashley. I would confine him to 1 room. I dont think he is getting the idea with the crate. I have learned with my dogs past and present that when they go to the toilet, they like to do it in the same place, so when you go looking for it, it should be on or around the pads. I have never crated mine. When I got up in the morning, there was always a risk of a pee, but this doesnt happen at all now, Betty has learned to control her bladder a bit longer as she has gotten older. Dont worry Ashley, beleive me it will get better. Maybe he just hates being confined to the crate.

We did that too. Because we couldn't put the crate together we had him baby gated in the bathroom and he would poop on the floor, right in front of the gate then jump around in it and smash it everywhere. I saw him sleeping on the pad before.

Ashley,

This is probably a crazy question, but do you keep him on a feeding and watering cycle?

He may also need to be outside trained instead of pad trained.

I kept Kira on a feeding and watering cycle and took her out after each. She had her accidents, but she eventually got the hang of it. I also took her out every 1/2 hour then extended it each time.

Good luck Ashley, I know how frustrating it can be, but hang in there.

Yea he is on a schedule.

I talked to the rescue lady again and she gave some good tips. I also went to PetSmart and talked to the trainer. This Saturday I'm going to a potty training seminar to hopefully get some more good tips.

Oh you did help, more than you know.

Yesterday Adam and I came to a conculsion. He can't be in a crate or gated even. He doesn't do well. Last night we had him and Chip sleep with us and Smokey didn't even move and didn't pee until the morning. I think we're going to have to start trusting them with free roam of our bedroom in order to see his pattern and I do think it was crate anxiety that caused these problems.

He slept through the night with me again! WOOHOO!!

This morning he layed on my arm so my arm was around him, the I started scratching his belly. He then laid on his side and laid his head on my chest right underneath my chin and went to sleep!

Ah thats lovely. From day 1 I have always had my 3 sleep in the room with me. We might have had a few accidents, but this was because they were young. But I think they get to no pretty quickly that this is their bed, and I do no that dogs dont like to pee were they sleep. It is sounding good for you Ashley. Im thinking that he feels safer being with the whole family at night.
