Do dogs remember?

Just a thought....when housebreaking a dog it is said that you should only discipline while catching them in the act because they don't remember to the next minute, right? So how come they develop behavioral problems and remember these incidence forever? I haven't researched this query yet...it just occurred to me. Any thoughts?

It isn't that dogs don't remember, they do. When it comes to housebreaking, you are correct in saying that you should only discipline when you catch them in the act. That way you are teaching them that, that act inside the house is wrong. You should clap your hands say " No" and take them to the place you want them to do their business. You don't discipline after the act, because then they think the wee/poo in wrong and NOT the act.
Did that make sense????.

I don't know what they say is true I just know what I see:D It could be 5 minutes or 5 hrs if I point to the spot and show Nemo (Which isnt hard wherever i go he follows) he just looks at me and put his ears back, he knows EXACTLY what he did and that it''s not acceptable. Nemo hasn't marked in awhile but when he did he would just look at me like "Im sorry I can't help it" it was never alot or often , but it did happen. I personally think they know exactly when they do something wrong whether it was 2 minutes or 2 hrs ago.

I so agree with all that Bek said. It does not take long for them to remember they are not to go in the house with persistance and a watchful eye. I do believe that dog's remember! I know the kids understand words and what they mean because they react to those words or statements. So they could not do that if they did not remember. If you say bath..........they scatter..........if you ask "want to go bye bye".....they come a running to the door that leads to the garage door. Ask them if they want a treat and they go right to the cupboard with the treats in them.
I really feel these marvelous creatures "remember" ..........when they want to!!:D :D :D :D
