View Full Version : New Puppy In Bedroom - No Sleep
Claire's Mom

We just got Claire a few days ago. She is 11 weeks old. She sleeps in her crate in our bedroom. She sleeps most of the night, but starts whining and crying if she hears me or my husband talk... or even snore too loud. I guess she wants attention if she thinks we're awake. If we're quiet, she stays quiet, but obviously it's next to impossible to stay perfectly quiet... not to mention it would be nice to have a conversation with my husband at night.
So now we're exhausted and need to figure this out. Should we move her crate into an Xpen downstairs at night? That way she has a little more room to roam and still has access to her bed in her crate. She could also use this area during the day while we're at work. Any advice would be much appreciated!
Neither my husband nor I have ever had a puppy before. This is all so new to us!

Welcome to MT!!
I would try that but she may cry more cause she isnt near you. Nemo is now 2 but he did the same exact thing, but I just bit my lip and let him cry and after 3 days he stopped. I don't know if you have children but it's the same really.
I knew nemo had to stay in that crate at night it was for his own safety and my husband didn't want him in the bed so there was no other choice but for him to get used to it and he did..
Good Luck,
ANDREA

Using the crate is good at night when they are young. Jack had his favorite stuffed toy and a nice soft bed in his crate. We draped a big towel over the sides to make it seem cozier. He cried for a while but he learned fast.
Good luck.

Hey Welcome to MT
I know what your saying.....Same thing happend with Lizzie, everytime we moved in bed she would wake up and cry.You couldnt get up to go to the bathroom or ANYTHING else if you know what I mean !
We ended up moving her to an X Pen in the downstairs and that is where she stays all day when we are at work.
We have it set up with the Bed and a Very large pillow in one end and her food in the other.Never went back to the crate...
I have it set up pretty cushy with Blankets all around it at night to keep any cold drafts out, its near our sliding glass door, so in the day time she can see out.
I wish we could have her upstairs but we wont get any sleep with her at this age, she is 8 months old now.

Thanks everyone for your advice. I'm going to stop on the way home and buy the xpen and try it downstairs with her crate. Hopefully she'll only cry or whine for a few minutes. Although those few minutes will break my heart. Wish me luck! I will check in tomorrow and let you know how it goes.

AWW She is so cute
I agree with what everyone else said. We had to move Zoe in her crate to the guest room. The best piece if advice came from my brother who told me think of putting her in her crate like putting her in her room to sleep. Make sure it is warm and soft and give her a toy.
It is hard to hear her cry I know, but it won't last forever.
Good luck

Your baby Clarie is DARLING, how fortunate you are to have her. Where did she come from or who did she come from, if I may ask?
I agree with the Crate training and X-Pen idea. Good luck and steady your nerves.

WELCOME TO MT CLAIRE'S MOM
Your little Claire is absolutely adorable...............so very sweet!!! Love her little tiny face. I just know she brings a lot of joy into your life.
I hope the crate and x-pen work for you!!!! You have to give it a try. Here's hoping it works for you!

You could also try putting an old shirt of yours and your husbands in the crate with her that smells like you... sounds gross but an unwashed one would do best and maybe a hide a ticking clock in it. That might soothe her. Chip used to do that too and when he did that, we'd firmly say "NO" and he'd get quiet. He's 11 months old now and loves his crate. New puppies ALWAYS whine and cry at first, but don't "fall" for it... if you pick her up while she's crying like that, she'll associate her crying with getting attention and the behavior will get worse. The best thing to do is give her plenty of toys, an old shirt, a ticking clock, and try to ignore her the best you can. Also, maybe get a crate cover... that might help some.

Yes there is something called a cuddle pup, I think Pet edge sells it.
It is a stuffed animal that has a battery operated heart beat that will keep your
baby thinking it has one of its siblings with her.
I also did the shirts with Lizzie and anything else I could get my hands on.
My wife thinks I spoil her but hey she is still just a baby.
Also I got the Xpen from Petco, it is all plastic. I think its called an XT play yard.what was nice about plastic is it wont scratch your floors and not as heavy as the metal.
Good luck and she is really cute !!

I definitely don't see any reason why you can't try moving her out of the bedroom. I'm sure your pup is used to being in a pen the majority of the time from when she was at the breeders house and I highly doubt they were in the bedroom there, LOL.
Good luck and i hope you get some sleep!

How is everything going with the xpen??? please keep us updated.
See with our babies when they cried, Hubby would roll over look at me and say " bring them up here" and they have never left our bed since :lol2: :D .
My hubby is such a big softy and we both enjoy waking up each morning to our furkids.

When we got our Mia last April she was 16 months old and stayed in her crate at night. The first night with us she seemed so afraid and my hubby put her in our bed. She cuddled between us and still sleeps there. We are softies to when it comes to our first ever furbaby after 35 years of marriage!!!

Pani is starting to sleep in her own bed, but she still end up in our bed every morning.:D
When we first got her she wouldnt sleep in her crate.
She would whines and bark until we let her in our bed.
couple months ago, I got tired of having sleepless night and just decide to get her a bed next to our. She got use to it prefectly fine. Which I was so shocked. Now everyone is happy. Shes the only spoiled one in the family.
shes get away with everything. I feel so sad for my other 2 dogs.
they sleep in their crates in the living room. :(
She does get to sleep in her crate only when i'm not home.

Thank you so much for all of your responses! Sorry it took so long for an update. Claire has moved into our master bathroom, which is part of our bedroom. She is gated off and has the whole bathroom and master closet to herself, with her crate in there with her. We had some whining at first, but now she's perfectly fine being put to bed every night. What a relief! We so enjoy our little girl. By the way, she's more than twice the size of the last picture I posted!!

That's great you figured out a way to still have her there with you but not there right on top of you. They learn so fast and now she has her own bedroom suite!! Just remember, if you put her in your bed you will never get her out of there again. They know a good thing when they find one:lol2:
