:dreaming: I'm not going to be able to adopt Mickie, but I have been given the go a head to start looking for a Maltese. I know I need to be really REALLY careful about where and from who I get my new babie from. So I was wondering if any knows if there is a Maltese breeder in the frozen state of Minnesota. I really want to be able to go and meet the breeder, see the conditions the dog's live in and make sure I'm getting healthy doggie, be it a puppy or a retierery.
Right now I'm just in the look and see what and who is out there. I'd like to wait for warmer weather to start this new adventure. So I thought I'd see what you all think of as for breeders, maybe try to get ahold of a few if there are any and see about getting to know the dams and sires if at all possable.
thank you so much for all you input.
I am learning so very much here, thank you for being here and for all the help given it's great.

I wish everyone a very merry Christmas.

Good for you! Taking your time and looking carefully will pay off in ways you can't even count right now.

I am sure there are many of us here that could give you a pat on the back, due to what we went though, when we didn't look carefully enough.

Merry Christmas,

Good Luck,

I think in Minnesota the link Andrea provided is probably the best breeder you will find. She posted on here for a little while and seems so nice, not to mention VERY informed.

I almost bought a pup from someone on "the list" which would have been horrible. Leo was bought from a breeder whom I believe to be very concerned about health and is informed as far as breeding programs go but no akc papers. Where in MN are you located?

Breeders love every one of their babies and are very concerned about the homes they go to so I am sure she will allow you as much time as you need to learn everything you need to know and they are always willing to answer questions. Hope you get your precious baby soon!:)

My camera uses AA batteries so I bought a little two battery charger that came with the batteries (rayovac)and charges within 15 minutes. It keeps a charge for a long time, I love it. It works with AAA batteries as well and can be found at Walmart, K-mart and Target.:D

p.s. I've used the same batteries for 3 years!

Alright Ladies I just talked to Sandy and she has a five year old female Missy she would sell to me. my main issue is the price. she is selling new puppies for 1500 totaly understand that price for a puppy, but Missy is 5 and she would be the same price.
I hope I attached the pictures the right way. ok please let me know what you guys think, i really trust you all.

Jes,
She is beautiful, but I am sorry 1500 for a 5yr old..
I think that is just crazy(Just My Opinion) you can get a retiree from 3 to 5 yrs for way less than that and they come spayed..
please search around before you decide..

I think I'm going to wait and see what else is out there.
I've also been flirting with the idea of a Havanese or Coton De Tulear, retiree and getting a Malt later. I'm just not sure I can handle a puppy being a first time dog owner.
I would still get a Maltese just not right away.

with me being gone from the house for 10 to 11 hours a day monday thru friday I think getting an adult would be a better start. with me still living with Mom and Dad, I could get mom to help me slowly get her (doggie) use to me being away to work so that way when I move out next fall I wont have to worry about a dog suffering from seperation anxiety.

Good thinking on your part puppies do require a lot of attention.

Morkie4
01-02-2008, 06:28 AM
Glad you decided against a puppy........they do require a lot of attention. Most small dogs, I have read about like companionship and suffer from separation anxiety if left alone too long. So even getting and "older" small dog will be a real test for them if you are going to be gone 10 to 11 hours five days a week. They may be lonely or have behavioral issues from being alone fo such extended time periods. So use caution in selecting a breed of dog as a companion. JMO

I wish you luck, Jes! I was going to suggest a rescue but that probably wouldn't work with your schedule either. I do know that Leo adjusted beautifully to my work schedule. He trots right into his crate as soon as I go for my coat in the morning. He has no accidents and loves his crate during the day. In fact my girls tell me that when I'm not home he will not come out during the day even when they open the door. He really is such a good little boy and loves his mama. Go with what you know to be right for new pup tho.

I think that this girl is a retiree. It was my understanding that retirees are typically placed for the price of spaying/teeth cleaning, but I know everyone has their own way of doing things so I'm definitely not saying it is wrong!

Retirees also can take a while to get adjusted to new homes and being 'only dogs' and can suffer from seperation anxiety. It really all depends on the dog/puppy, their personality. A friend of mine has a havanese and she is such a mellow girl!

What you said is what I have been told! Which is really quite reasonable for a retiree to just pay for the spay/neuter/teeth/shots/etc. So it is a great way to get an older dog of quality but as Stacy said, each breeder really has their own way of doing things. And as she mentioned most retirees grow up with a "pack" of other dogs so being the "only dog" can cause some unwanted behavior such as the "separation anxiety." There are a lot of things to consider. Jmo

It totally sucks cause Mom wants a dog also and would have been totally willing to help me with getting a dog SLOWLY adjusted to my work hours. It really would have been ideal cause I'm not moving out until next fall so we would have had loads of time to acclimate her/him but now that's right out the window.

Oh that is too bad. It is probably for the best that things didn't work out though - especially if you were considering a retiree. If everybody in the household isn't receptive, I think dogs can sense that and it can make the acclimation time more difficult.

Good luck with everything! Maybe one day, you'll be able to get your baby.
