Katie was not a maltese but a maltipoo that my mom picked out at her local pound. If she had not adopted her that day, I would have. She was the sweetest little thing with a lot of pep and happy ways about her. She was tiny (under six pounds), about a year old and according to the records, she belonged to a "street" person who had been put into the hospital and Katie was turned over to the pound. She adopted her in 1991 and Katie began her life of bringing my mom so much joy. With the passing of my dad in 1995.........well, little Miss Katie had become my mom's fulltime companion. She would have been 17 years old next month. They were "perfect" for each other.

I am sad to say, she had started to go down hill with each passing year after 15 years old. My mom and I spoke yesterday at length about "letting go." Katie was blind, very little hearing and the kidneys had started to shut down. There were a few other things that showed her quality of life had slipped away. She called me within an hour and said she took Katie to the vet and put her best friend to sleep..........I was proud that she loved her little girl enough to let go!!! She will have her cremated and will be keeping her ashes. My mom is 82 and this has been very hard on her. She was in tears but knows she did the right thing for her darling little girl that she loved with all her heart. I too am very sadden at the passing of Katie, I loved her like she was my own! I was her groomer, babysitter and "sister." :( :( :( :(
I've attached pictures of her for you to "admire."

I am so so sorry. Miss Katie is a beautiful little girl.

I am glad your mom did the right thing for her. It is hard, but she did the right thing. I know how she feels and I know it will be SO HARD, but once the clouds move away, she can look back and smile at the memories she had with such a sweet little one.:cry2: :cry2:

When Sophie passed, momma told me there was a new baby angel in heaven that night that would look over me. I beleive the same is true for your mom.
Who knows..maybe Soph welcomed her when she crossed the bridge.

Your mom gave Miss Katie a wonderful life (and she did the same for your mom).

Again, I am so very sorry for your loss.:lovehug3: :hands:

Carol, Miss Katie had a wonderful sweet little face. She lived a good, long life with a purpose. She was meant to find your mom and vice versa. May she rest in peace at the rainbow bridge.

So sad when an older person looses a "fur-child". I lost my Maddie last dec. and had such a hard time even though I still have a teen at home and a family to look after. It was just like loosing a tiny little child, Maddie, my Maltese was 12. It might be a good idea to make an online memorial for her? I mean if she goes on the computer. It is healing, at least to some degree.

Thanks.............my mom doesn't even own a computer even thought we offered to give her one. Hubby's mom is the same way, they don't want a computer (they just don't know what they are missing). We even offered to get her another dog when she was ready........but she is 84 and doesn't feel she can handle the responsibility so she comes and visits and my fluffs just crawl all over her and give her lots of loving! Thanks for your thoughtfulness!

Also, very sorry you lost your little Maddie..........some things you just never get "over"......you just learn to deal with it better with each passing day. When I lost my Kelsey in 2004, I thought my world was coming to an end........nine months later, we adopted Kallie, six months later we adopted Toby, five months later we adopted Brandy and then finally 10 months later we adopted Brandy............if you had told me I would go from no fluffs to four, I would called you nuts!   But each one of them have brought something special into my home, and I love them all! But there will always be a place in my heart for Kelsey....a missing part.

I was browsing the site and came across you post about the passing of your moms dog. Since my little Biscuit just passed on Saturday 2/6, I can relate well to your mom. You have posted me about Biscuit. Biscuit was my companion also for 10 years. I like your mom live alone, I am 75 and I am truly devistated. Did your mom get another dog? I know I cannot replace Biscuit but she was such a good friend and companion, and I think I just might need another to keep me company....Of course not now....How could I deal with it.....I am just wondering

Hi Carol,

So sorry I'm so late but just want to let you know that I share your tears about Katie being gone. It brings back so many sad memories when I lost my little Nikki. I can only imagine how difficult this would be for you because of the big heart you have for all this little fluffs who need our help. Hang in there sweetie. Here's a big hug from my fluffs and I :ghug:
