crate training?

I know a lot of people ask about this, but our situation is unique I guess. Chip is 100% crate trained. Smokey on the other hand, is our rescue, and is very anxious in a crate. He ends up having diaherria and pees everywhere in it because he gets so nervous. We had been leaving them out in the open, but they were shredding paper, getting into trash, tearing up my underwear, and just basically throwing a party when we were gone. We tried an experiment though to see how Smokey did with Chip in a crate alone. We tried it a couple times a couple weeks ago for about 30 minutes each and they were fine. We tried it again and left them alone in the crate for 3 hours. The problem is, Smokey thinks it's okay to go to the bathroom in the crate. He did poop in the crate, but since it was hard, we think he just needed to go. How do we retrain a dog that already thinks pottying in the crate is okay? HELP!

Ashely, I have no clue. We were told that Kallie (adopted at 2 yrs) was crate trained. We had nothing but poop/pee when we would crate her when we were gone. And she did not mind stepping in it the least bit so it meant a bath almost every time we would crate her when we would leave. YUK. I had never crated a dog in 35 years of owning dogs so I just reverted back to my 'old' ways of free roaming. It was only after getting Toby that Kallie stopped pottying in the house. Now all three roam free and no potty issues to deal with. They are such good babies and I've never found anything torn up or destroyed once we got Toby corrected about stealing from the bathroom garbage. Now the container can be full and he does not go near it. BUT, I am home most of the day so they are never left for long periods of time to get into trouble.:wink5: :wink5: :wink5:

Have you tried a playpen instead?
and putting the crate in the playpen and a peepad in the crate?
how old is smokey?
is he potty trained?

i used to have a crate and had the doors open,
they would go in there take naps and come out...
i just got rid of it and gave it to the maltese rescue
because they sleep on the sofa, bed, their bed, my lap more...

try the playpen, and if they shred the peepads
try the reusable peepads...

I thought about trying a playpen... I just gotta figure out where to put it. I also came up with the genious idea to baby gate them in the bathroom with a couple pee pads lying down.

Smokey is 9 months and is not potty trained. He thinks where ever he stands is where he pottys. We can't get him out of that train of thought.

I just signed up for another one. NOVA yorkshire terriers. It's also for yorkies and other toy dogs under 15 lbs. There is a meet up on Feb 10 and I'm going!!!

It's confirmed. Hubby doesn't care that I go, but he's not going. I don't know what day I wanna go. I've never been there though and I'm directionally challenged lol

im in northern virginia! you should tell hubby it will be lots of fun! lots of things to see (buy... but you dont have to tell him that:lol2:)

its at the dulles convention center, right off route 28 towards dulles airport well if you get off 66.

I do hope I can make it. I'll be taking Toby in the sling unless I can get his aggression worke out of him before then. The girls would be great at any meet up; they are so even keeled!

Adam isn't going with me. He has to work at nights, so during the day he has to sleep. It sucks for things like this though cause I wish he'd be there. But I guess it's not bad to go out and make friends for my self :-)
