View Full Version : Jack At It Again!!

:tongue6: Jack has struck again in the "Search and Destroy" department.
Now we are up to 3 toys destroyed. The latest toy was the Benny the Bull from PetsMart. Jack got a little hole in his belly and pulled the squeaky out and tried to swollow that. Thank goodness I got that out of his mouth in time. He has so many "good" chewy toys but he's putting more gray hairs under my "bottled" brown hair, and I may just start to really drink!
Today, I walk in from work and there in the utility room is our nice white floor lamp. I look at it and guess what? Jack has struck again. While his daddy was reading the morning newpaper in the kitchen, Jack decided to "bite" the end of the cord off and he was trying to swollow the plug. My husband heard him gagging and pulled the plug out of his throat. He had never bothered that lamp before. It was plugged in but the power switch on the wall was on off. We have a floor lamp in the kitchen and I always spray that one with the bitter apple every morning but I've never had to spray the other one. Now, the garbage man is getting a nice ruined lamp.
We give him the whole kitchen when we're gone, but now I'm thinking we may have to put him in his crate. I don't want him to think it's a punishment but I'm really nervous now to leave him loose.

AWWW he sounds so cute though!!
How old is he Cheryl? I know Nemo will still sometimes chew things.
He has managed to chew a big hole in his bed~~
Thank God your husband caught him with that cord:(

Wow, your Jack is a real character! Good thing the switch was off or you could have had a very punk looking maltese!! Hope you didn't pay much for the lamp; it can be replaced! He's trying his best to test you but you are winning with flying colors......he's not been able to get himself into BIG trouble yet! I have no solutions for you but certainly can sympathize that you are dealing with a tuff problem. Maybe you should give Jack the drink instead of yourself. LOL

Oh okay, he is still a puppy then, I think they all do this.Nemo didnt calm down till after a year or so, It will get better. You really need to watch him close, I would crate him, I hate to think what would have happened if your husband wasnt there..

ROFL - Teddy is known as THE DESTROYER . Last year they got an adorable Santa toy , the boys had his limbs ripped off in 5 minutes . Princess Charlotte has been playing fetch with a tiny Santa arm ALL year - it's a trifle creepy . Sarah

I wouldn't crate him now, he wouldn't understand why he has been crated. I would use a baby play pen to limit his space while you and hubby aren't home.
When you are home and catch him destroying things I would clap my hands say NO and then put him in his crate for 1-2min. Mind you, if he is destroying his own toys, well they are his to destroy:D
Good luck, I am sure he will out grow it by the time he is around 12mths.

hahaha Sarah, Scrappy prefers the body bits too and it is creepy.
Awww Max sounds sweet. I think everything up off the kitchen floor just as you would with a crawling baby in the house till he can be trusted.
Scrappy only chewed stuff like gold credit cards that he had dug out of my handbag :( My handbags he always has his nose in even now. Oh and the leg of my desk when he was teething ;)

Thanks for all the advice. I'm just not use to this at all. Our 1st Maltese Max never destroyed his toys nor did anything like the lamp destroying, and we had Max for 12 years.
I've always read that you shouldn't use the crate as a punishment, but sometimes they need to be sent to their "room" just like my sons were when they were little. The books say the pup should feel safe and secure in its crate. I'm confused!! We stopped using the crate with Max at 5 months because he wanted nothing to do with it. This is the longest we've used a crate.
With the playpen---do your pups actually play in it? Don't they try to chew their way out? I haven't used a playpen in 27 years!!

The playpens you can get these days are great, and no they can't chew there way out of them. Since Jack doesn't use his crate, then I would use it as his time out room. If it was his den and he loved it, then NO I wouldn't use it. I would use the playpen for when you are out or can't watch him.
You can get alot of different styles and sizes, here is a pic I found before of one style ( similiar to mine at home except not as high)

Oh!!! Now I know I've been out of it for a long time. I'm thinking "play pen" as in a child's play pen. Please, someone just shoot me now.

Hey, don't feel bad about it! You don't deserve to be shot. I thought the same thing until I kept looking on the internet. So if you deserve to be shot, then put me in the lineup! :fainted: LOL I finally broke down and bought one of the metal pens, also called exercise pens for when we are doing yard work so they can be outside with us yet be safe! They are really great and come in different sizes and heights. We have a 10 panel, 30 inch high pen for the kids and gives them plenty of room but if you are going to use this inside, you might want to stick with the eight panel pen. jmo

Ok, we don't deserve to be shot! Thanks for the info on the size. The 30" high is ok for our pups? Maybe I'll look into this pen thing. If I get the 8 panel now, can I add on later if I want to?
Another update on "Master Destructo"---he has also taken a fancy to my woodwork around our frontroom picture window.

I found the 30" perfect for my kids. I can just step over the top to get inside with them. But I'm 5'6'' so long legs. If you are a shorty, it might not be so easy. As far as adding on, it depends on where you buy it. The place I bought mine did not have individual add on panels but there were other web sites that had the pens and then you could add on individual panels......but the panels have to be the same size as the original pen heigth, of course. The other thing is the "door." Some have a door that is a "walk-in" door and then you have the doggie door where it is just a door similar to a "crate" door that is within the panel. Am I making sense?? Well, if you go to a site you will see what I mean. They also come in a zinc/gold color and a black epoxy coated. We got the black but at the dog show this weekend I saw several of the zinc/gold ones. Don't have a clue which is the better, but check it out on the web site. Jadey has a couple of these pens as well and she might be able to give you some information too.

Wow, he sounds just like LB:tongue3: ! I have a "hospital" for all the toys her and Kira has chewed, LOL those toys are too expensive to throw away just yet:D . They pull the stuffing right out of it! LB is crated when we're not at home because she's a chewer (electrical cords too)! She's almost 12 months and she's not chewing as much so hopefully, she's growing out of this. I'm slowly giving her more independence but still don't trust her. I'm sure Jack is just testing you to see his limits. Good luck!

:thankyou: Carol for the info. We will definately look into this.
As for the guns---We can form a circle and aim our guns at each other and shoot away. We just might start a new fad. We'd really have a "mixed drink" :martini: if we all did this.
On another note---I'm still depressed :cry2: that I can't upload any of my pictures. I'd love to be able to post some like you guys. I'll never be as good at it but I would just like to be able to try. My son said he'll look into that resize2mail.com site and try that.
Ok, get those water pistol loaded and come out firing!!! The last one standing is the champion sharp shooter.

That's ok Bek---just as long as it's you with babies on the brain and not me!! As for the shot of vodka--meet us at the saloon with your pistol loaded and come out shooting!!!! At age 53:tongue6: if I had babies on the brain I'd come out with a shotgun and shoot myself full of liquor.

Maybe the fact I already have 3 sons and am 33yrs old, looking into having my tubes reversed so I can try again for a little girl, I have ordered books on How To Conceive A Girl, read nearly everything on the net about how to conceive a girl, yet still if this happens for me I may still end up with another boy:fainted: . I think I should be standing next to you with that loaded shootgun of liquor, LOL :D

Well---we had a great day today! We got the next size up on the rawhides and he's been going to town on that instead of his toys, lamps, and window sills. I think he's being coached on all this stuff from his buddy Nemo (puggle) from doggy school. His mom is the principal at my school. When I told her everything Jack had done she just laughed and said Nemo had done all those things. When they have their 5 minutes of play before class starts, I think Nemo gives Jack some ideas on what to do next.
Right now it's 11:30 pm and he's in pyscho mode. He's running from one end of the house to the other with his giant frog in his mouth and just terrorizing all of us!!!! Where did I put that loaded liquor pistol????

Carol--at least you have 2 that terrorize each other. Jack terrorizes us!!! He just destroyed his favorite little cloth ball that he got for Christmas from Jadey.
He loved that little ball. We'll have to try and find one just like it tomorrow at PetsMart when we go to school.

Yes, Jack is an only Maltese child. The only other animal in the house is our cockatiel Sonny.
When I talk about our other Maltese Max, it is in the past tense. He was our first Maltese and we had him for 12 wonderful years. He passed away Aug.6, 2005 from spleen cancer. He had his spleen removed in Jan. 2005 and the cancer came back in that area at the end of July and took him within a week. I put his name at the front of my sign-in name because I love him so much and miss him terriblely. Jack is a wonderful little guy and I love him too, but there's just something about that first Maltese that steals your heart away forever. Max is the reason that I love this breed.
Sorry to rattle on. Thanks for listening.

I'm so sorry for your loss of Max..........it's so hard after 12 years. My last little girl was a mix and she was the sweetest little dog and was there for me at the times I needed her the most! Best dog even though she wasn't a maltese.........she wil always be in my heart and I still miss her, we had to put to sleep on 04-30-04.......that day will be forever in my mind! So I know how you are feeling. It took me nine months to get another dog but finally have Kallie and Toby. Hang in there.........you will get to the point that you will remember Max without tears.:smlove2:
