I have tried everything I can think of to get Izzy to go potty outside when we take her out. If we are lucky she does it! On the other hand, most of the time we aren't that lucky. I bought some potty pads and placed one in each room that she has access to. It doesn't matter.. If she has to go she will go where she feels like it.. Hardly ever does she use the pads.. She has a crate that she sleeps in at night and she really won't have any accidents in the crate... She will hold it til the morning just fine. I just don't understand why she is going everywhere else? Any ideas??

LB is both pad and outside trained. It took about 2 months but she
finally got it.

For the pads I put pads all over the living room. The only place she
was allowed. I blocked off everywhere else. I also monitored her
potty habits. Like what she would do if she would need to pee or
poop. She would twirl around so I knew she would need to go. Then
I'd take her to the pad. I also controlled her water and feeding
intake. I would watch her after each and usually she would go
in 7-10 mins. She is also crate trained, I have her in her crate at night.
I then started taking away pads and eventually just moved them to
2 areas, the living room and the master bath.

She took to outside training without any problems. I'm grateful I have
her trained inside as well, just in case there is any bad weather.

Good luck!

Thanks for the tips! It is hard sometimes because I have four kids so watching her every minute is very hard. I do think I am going to try to confine her into the living room area though. Instead of giving her free roam of the house for a while. We have only had her for a month so it will take a while I am sure. Thanks again!

Limiting her to a certain amount of space (one or two rooms) is a must at first so that you can keep an eye on her. Second is to take her outside as often as possible on a leash and limit her activity to going potty outside until she learns why she is outside and then playtime outside can be added but for now, let her only think of outside as a place to potty. Take her to the same spot so she can get the "incentive smells." I also carried "treats" with me and as soon as they would start to pee or poo, I would calmly say their name followed with good boy/girl. When they were done with their business, then I would get really into verbal and physical rewards for the positive action and then a treat would follow. Just some suggestions but all three of mine are 100% housetrained and have free roam of the house. :) :)

I can totally understand how hard it is to potty train with 4 kids
to watch over.

Maybe confining her to the living room would be a
great thing for a while. Do you have an expen you
can keep her in as well? It may take a while but it
will be worth it once she's trained.

Good luck!

no I don't have one of those.. But I have a gate I could use to keep her in the living room. I think I will try that for a while til she gets more used to going on ther pads and outside.

I will be sure to try the reward thing as well when she does good.. Her problem is she loves to play as soon as that door is open! LOL

Leash her when you do take her outside and then don't respond to her "cuteness of wanting to play" but just keep her in the location of her potty area and keep telling her "Izzy, go potty"......."Izzy, go potty." She'll soon realize that if she goes potty, she will be rewarded greatly for her little feat! :)

thanks so much! I was wondering if I should have had her on a leash. I will try that next time we go outside.

We have a 4 month old Maltese. He has been with us for 1 month now. We LOVE him and he has brought so much to our home. Its so frustrating because he pees on the pad 100& of the time BUT pooping is a different story. We started by crate training. Took him out every 2 hours, if he made on the pad a YEA! a treat and he could play with us for 25 minutes. Then back in the crate and follow the same routine. If he didnt go on the pad back in the crate. It was working so well that he was out of the crate most of the day before we knew it. Then he started pooping wherever he wanted when we would turn our back on him. Sometimes it seemed that he pooped on purpose when we left the room. We think he knows when we are not happy. We cant take him out yet because he doesnt have all his shots. So what can I do?:)

I made some comments on the potty training issues in the Maltese training thread: "Help, Emma's potty training is not going well"

A couple of questions: How many times a day do you feed him??? Do you walk him outside to potty on the leash or just let him free run???

My experience with potty training is to leash them and when I took them out, I did not say anything to them, play with them but just concentrated on making them potty. I kept repeating, go potty and nothing more until they went potty and then I rewarded them immediately with verbal approval and a treat!!! If he is not trained, then he can not have full reign of the house. It is something that you will have to put a lot of time, effort and patience into for him to get the idea that potty is for outside!! Hope some of my suggestions will work for you!................:)

:confused:Have you tried marking a spot outside for him...meaning take some of his poop and urine outside where you want him to go and place it where you want him to go and take him there each time. When he has an accident before cleanin the area get samples, Urine absorbed with paper towels and poop in a baggie. This is how I trained Nole to use the litterbox plus he has his own spot outside.

I bought a book called train your dog in 7 days. It gave me a schedule to go by when Paisley was around 16 weeks using a crate and certain times for food, water and play. Until then, she was in a largish pen in my kitchen with a pad inside unless I was watching her. When she was very little 8,9,10 weeks) at night she was in a crate with half pad, half bed. Don't stress. The schedule was helpful to me. Now she is so good, she pbarks or rings poochie bells on my door when she needs to go out. I still crate her when we're out. Good luck!

We've had Cooper for almost 5 weeks and I can attest to how wonderful a schedule is for getting him to go to the bathroom when we want him too. He stays in the crate (home) over night, then I take him out when I get up. When Jess get's up she feeds him and takes him out about 15 minutes later. Then he goes back home untill lunch when one of us comes home to let him out again. Repeat for after work/dinner. Durning the week, we might have 1 accident if we play with him and don't take him outside right away. We just follow this simele rule; After any event (food, sleep, play) take him out within 10 minutes or we're asking for a little puddle of pee.

From day one we have been saying "potty" over and over once we get outside (on the leash). Now, if he's been good all day I'll just say "lets go potty" and he will walk down the stairs with me and go straight to his spot.

Consistency and patience are king.
