 Does anyone remember what thread had the picture of the black maltese puppy? I can't afford another dog but I was just curious if anyone has heard back from that breeder.

Oh, I remember the thread very well.........but it got erased by the crash! So there is no way to figure out much about the breeder unless someone remembers her registered name........and I don't have a clue!:D

I would love to have gotten a picture of that baby. As much as I love the white maltie, that black one would be adorable.

How come all the threads from 2005 and such weren't lost in the crash? I'm pretty new to this stuff and don't understand the terminology about crashes.

She posted another litter for sale as black maltese 6 months after the first litter. I asked her to post a pic of a puppy from the last litter at 6 months old and it looked like a morkie.

Thanks!! Is this breeder to be trusted? How do you try to pass what might be a morkie off as a maltese and not think people will figure it out. The "black" color does give it away just alittle!!!
My sister did tell me that the black is a rare possibility because we do get "white" dogs because of a recessive gene. Hundreds (maybe thousands) of years ago, the first Maltese were not all white. They were bred down to the standard they are now.

If you do get a pic please post it for me. I'd just like to copy it and put it up on my wall in a frame.

YOu are absolutely right although she insisted the parents were both purebred white maltese! But we know different! Yes, it is true there were black maltese at one time but they took great efforts to rid the breed of all black and only have white.............centuries ago! Glad to see you are posting and being a full member!:D

When the crash took place, they had not backed up any new members posts or threads so only had the original information............Means like a virus got hold of the programs and erased everything but they did have some of the very first MT registered members copied to a CD...........so they used that CD to start MT up again and any members who came on and were not on the back up CD were erased as well. So they had to reregister but there was no way the threads and posts could be recovered. That help you?

I personally think the original maltese that came in different colours were stunning. Although I luv the white flowing coat, I also adore the other colours. I think it is ashame that we breed the original colours out of them.

Alot of people are against mixed breeds and only breeding to better the breed and although I do agree with that and am tatally against backyard breeding, I do feel as though we interfered with nature, I don't understand why it is that we as humans bred out the original colour variety of the Maltese.

I love the Maltese breed, I luv there human like personality, there unconditional love they have for us as there owner, there child like characteristics, the list goes on and on, but none of that relates to the colour.

That is JMO.

I totally agree with Bek. I have this great article from a Maltese magazine and it talks about how the standards are so important and how the maltese has changed so much. I would love to have different colors. Other breeds have multiple colors that are accepted in the show ring (cocker spaniel for one).
As Chloeandj stated that the breeder also has black poodles, well, just be honest and say if they are maltipoos. Alot of the best dogs are mutts. People put mutts down but they sure are paying alot of money for a mixed breed: puggles, bojacks, labadoodle and the list goes on. My friend that lives in NY has a maltipoo that she paid $1200 for!!!!!!

 Some malts have the bit of tan on their ears and even a spot on their backs, maybe a recessive gene from way back when? I think it is cute. My Sunny has one of those spots on his back but it has faded a bit.

The standard used to be larger too? I think in Europe the standard is still larger than in North America? Maybe that is where all the health problems arise from trying to breed for a smaller dog - why do people mess with mother nature

Yes I agree it can be a gene from way back , maybe once, but not twice.
I just have a hard time believing all this, could be wrong though

Sorry, I can't even accept that it could be a long lost gene from way back! There has not been black maltese in eons of time. Really!!! It was carefully bred out of the breed as undesirable a very long time ago. It just ain't going to happen!!! Never will I be convinced that they are purebred "black" maltese.

I think I Found Nemo might be referring to the tan gene I was referring to, not the black maltese, but I could be wrong  Or maybe I confused the thread  by referring to the bit of tan that appears from time to time. LOL who is confused now?

I dont believe their ever was a pure black maltese

Morkie4
01-21-2007, 11:36 AM
From all the reading I have done on the maltese even in older books, it does state that there were black maltese at one time in the 18th century in England but that they worked very hard at getting the "genetic" black out of the breed. I will look through my source material and see if I can find something more specific on "black" maltese. But I am still of the opinion that it is not a possibility today to produce a purebred black maltese. It would have had to been mixed with another breed dog! jmo.....and I'm intitled to that! LOL:tongue5:

I understood what you were saying:D You thought the tan colouring was a gene from the past. Right! The tan is allowed but not desirable but i have seen the No1 maltese for 2005 & he had light tan markings.

A while ago I had a little conversation with Sharon (FoxstoneMaltese) who is a very well respected Maltese Breeder & who knows her stuff & in her opinion the "Black Maltese" is NOT possible unless mixed with another dog & then it would not be a pure bred Maltese.

I totally agree, there is no possible way it could be a purebred Black Maltese. Sounds like this person is just a scammer.

I do think it is ashame though, that we can't enjoy the colours that were once in the Maltese breed. I would luv a little white Malt and a Black Malt, even a multicoloured Malt.

After re-reading my last post (#13) I realized that I might have offended some with the term mutt. I don't know why I even used that word, I don't like to use it myself. I know alot of the MT members have mixed breeds and I never should have used that term. For that I am truly sorry. I also feel that I shouldn't have talked about the price someone pays for their pet. I hope everyone will accept my deepest apology.

Cheryl , I have a cross breed and I wasn't offended by the term . A cross breed in Australia only costs $200.00 to $500.00 . A mutt to me is a dog of indiscriminate breeding and unknown origin . Princess Charlotte on the other hand is a trifle perturbed to be called a mutt . Sarah

Cheryl don't worry about it I am sure there was no offence taken.

Some people are happy to be owned by a mutt lol My sister paid way too much for her's ..........a Labradoodle and then named him "Dudley" as in a dud.

Explaination.... he wouldn't respond to any names they were trying out and she turned to her husband and said "I think we got a dud" to which Dudley whipped his head around and looked at her so Dudley was so named.

Hello everyone. I think I have found the answer or at least a possible answer to the question of the black maltese. I was looking at maltese puppies on Live Deal and there is a maltese/chihuahua mix that they say looks just like a maltese but it is black. I am sorry but I dont know how to post a link to it but if you go to www.livedeal.com and then click on pets then dogs then maltese you can find it easily as there are only 3 pages of maltese listed right now and it is on page one. It sure is cute but and at least these people arent trying to pass if off as a pure bred black maltese.

It was not my intent to endorse the site. I have purchased from people on there before and would again but I do my homework before hand and I do not have anything shipped but rather pick up in person so I know what I am getting. As with any website that allows individuals to sell things and or animals, you have to be cautious and use common sense. Again, it was not my intent to endorsse the site but rather to inform others of a possible mix that would result in a so-called black maltese. I had read the posts here in regards to this and was just trying to help.

I agree with you girls. The Malts were different colors but that was back in the 1300-1500's. Wouldn't the recessive gene be wiped out of the gene pool by now? I think they were probably mixed with black poodles. It would be cool though to not have to worry about tear stains or anything like that. I would love a black one.

I think they were probably mixed with black poodles. It would be cool though to not have to worry about tear stains or anything like that. I would love a black one.

My daughter's neighbor had a Maltipoo and it looked exactly like a maltese but black!!! Cutest little thing, even had the maltese tail and soft fur. They moved so I don't know how it looked as it grew older but below is a pic of a Moxie (maltese/dauchsund) that friends of ours have and I'm anxious to see how she looks as an adult!

I thought it would be black? I tried looking for a black Malt online but could only find Maltipoos in black. Some people advertise spotted ones too.

Carol---how did they come up with the name 'Moxie' when the 2 breeds are Maltese and Dauchsund? I would think 'Dauchtese' or 'Maldauch' or 'Malsund' !!!

Cause sometimes the dauchsund is referred to as a Doxie for short!

Well.. not to jinx myself, but I found a adorable maltese/poodle mix in rescue.

He is black with a little white on his chin and chest. Stunning! That little face just called out to me!
He appears to have more of the maltese look, his hair also looks more like the maltese than the poodle.

Tiny little guy, only 1 1/2 lbs. at 8 weeks. Too young to be away from his mommy I know, but he is a rescue, and came in without his mom. Sad story, but he has a chance at a better life now.

I put in a application for him!!!!
Say a prayer for me... I would love to have him.

The organization said I would hear back from them within 48 hours.
Gonna be a long 48 hours! Keeping my fingers crossed...

Alana, good for you for trying to rescue that precious little baby.
We got Jack from a shelter, he was tossed away at 4 1/2 months. We had to go through a tough application screening, but it was well worth it.
Hope the next 48 hours go by fast and you'll have your little one home with you to love and spoil rotten.

I don't know if I would say black maltese is not possible. I know a lady from my work (two of her dogs are patients of mine) and she has been breeding and showing maltese for almost 40 years and her mother bred and showed for 20 years before she passed away and she said in all her years of breeding she has had many litter and has only had three black maltese. All were from the same dam. She has one of this bitches sons and he was recently bred to a bitch in TO a few weeks ago so if there are any black pups in that liter then I would say it must be a gene and it is possible. The dam is now retred from showing and breeding.

Well, I have done a lot of reading on the maltese breed just to be well informed about them. There were black maltese at one time in the early 1700s but they no longer exist and a "black" maltese that is produced has another breed mixed in at some point along the lines not a black maltese gene. The black maltese was found not to be acceptable or desired within the breed and so it was bred out a loooooooooooong time ago!!! So I'm not sure why your friend would be getting black purebred maltese. Today breeders breed for quality and genetic sound maltese and I think most of them would hope not to find a black maltese in their litters. JMO

JMHO, In all of my research (and I researched the breed for 7-8 years before I ever started breeding,) I have never heard of a black Maltese in this day and time. If it were me and I produced one I would be devastated. Because it would show that I was breeding very poor quality Maltese. And I would have to start from scratch with my program. I know that all reputable breeders including myself are breeding to better the breed to the standard. And a black Maltese is not in the standard.

I sent them a email asking why, but have not heard anything back.

Oh the Black and White issue... I would LOVE to have a black Maltese and believe me I have been on the hunt, YEAH right but that hunt is on the OTHER planet I live on from time to time. HAHAHA
How clearly I recall when that was first posted about the "Black Maltese" before the Crash.

Dear Sunnydog, here in Europe the Maltese dog has been recognise as Italian. There are proofs of his presence here since 1st century a.C. but all rappresentations of the dog show him completely white. Unfortunately I don't know how to translate the names of ancient writers, poets and kings in your language, but many Malts were pictured next their famous owners like Tiziano (painter), Veronese (painter), Tintoretto (painter), Giuseppe Verdi (musician: the one who composed The 4 Seasons), etc. Following the European standard (required by the Italian Association...) the Maltese dog has to be lightly taller and heavier than the American one. By the way, Malts have to be white, and if you think that they took their origines from "bolognese dog" (a white Italian dog) who also gave life to "bichon frisé" (white) and "havanese" (white) that means that a black maltese is not recognise by any serious breeder or association. Hope I didn't bother you (I also hope my English is not so awful :( )

Becky, IF you ever make a black maltese, CALL ME! I will take that puppy in a heartbeat. Since I am not a breeder nor ever going to Show my doggies, I can have a black Malt. :lol2:

I wish I could recall where I read this, but I did once, "Maltese were of every color once, due to fashion wishes all other colors were bred out." honestly I don't find it too impossible to find one that isn't white one day.

In saying this, YES I love White Maltese and find nothing wrong with them at all. I just really like black doggies too.
